    Back when Patrick Chia was in the budding stages


    of his career as an industrial designer, one of his
    concepts had already caught the attention of
    renowned designer Philippe Starck. His Squeeze
    bench was a playful design that made it into the
    International Design Yearbook 1997, and was also
    picked by Starck for one of his hotel projects in Los
    Angeles. It was a huge deal for me because up
    till then, I was still learning along the way. It was at
    that point that I realised that I needed to make my
    designs more professional, Patrick reminisces.
    Since then, Patricks designs, which tend to
    have an emotional rather than just a functional
    appeal to its users, have gone on to clinch several
    notable international awards. His works have also
    been exhibited in galleries in Paris, New York, Los
    Angeles, London and Tokyo. These days, besides
    honing his longboarding skills, Patrick keeps busy
    lecturing in the industrial design department of
    the National University of Singapore and serving
    as director of the universitys Design Incubation
    Centre. Along with the engineers, technicians, and
    researchers at the centre, he hopes to pave the
    way for future industrial designers by researching
    progressive teaching frameworks and adopting
    non-traditional design applications. A design
    solution doesnt always have to be a product. It
    could be a service, a business model, or even a
    type of trigger that affects social behaviours.
    One of the six on the list for Designer of
    the Year at this years Presidents Design Award,
    Patrick reveals that it feels great to be recognised
    for his work with the university. I enjoy teaching
    because it really helps me sharpen my thoughts.
    When I design, I work intuitively. But when I look
    at my students works, I have to be more analytical
    and objective. Its not just about designing, but
    questioning why youre doing it, says Patrick.
    This award feels like a concluding chapter in my
    career. Im not sure what Ill do next!
    Patrick Chias designs will be on display at the URA
    Centre (January 24 February 27) and National
    Design Centre (March 3 16) as part of the
    Presidents Design Award Exhibition.
