Question 1 (20 marks)

List four main applications of power electronics.

-

(4 marks)

Industrial : Industrial furnaces, blowers and fans, pumps

and compressors.
Residential : Air conditioning, cooking, lighting,
refrigerators.
Transportation : traction control of electric vehicles, street
cars, automotive electronics.
Aerospace : Space shuttle power supplies Satellite power
supplies.

- High power conversion equipment such as dc transmission

- Everyday application such as cordless screw driver or power
supplies for notebook computer
1. DC/DC converter are used in most mobile devices(mobile
phone, pda and etc) to maintain the voltage at fixed value
whatever the change level of the battery is. These
converters are also used for electronic isolation and power
factor correction
2.

AC/DC converter rectifiers are used every time an

electronic devices is connected to the mains(computer,
television and etc.

3. AC/AC converters are used to change either the voltage

level or the frequency international (power adapters, light
dimmer). In power distribution network AC/AC converters
may be used to exchange power between utility frequency
50 Hz and 60Hz power cycle.
4. DC/AC converters (inverters) are used primarily in UPS or
emergency light. During normal electricity condition, the
electricity will change the DC battery. During blackout time,
the DC battery will be used to produce AC electricity at its
output to power up the appliances.
In linear circuit, the voltage source is vs = 12sin(103t + 24) V.

Question 5 (20 marks)

Describe the operation of a DIAC and its characteristics. You may

draw diagrams to illustrate your answers.

(5 marks)

The DIAC is a two terminal semiconductor switching

device that can be conduct in both forward and reverse
polarities. The main function of DIAC is to improve
operation of alternating current power switching system.
The name of DIAC its contracting of Diode Alternating
Current, its mainly use in dimmer application and also in
starter circuit for florescent lamps and widely used to
assist even triggering of TRIAC when use in AC switches.
The operation of DIAC
-

Its conduct ON only when the applied voltage

exceeds the break over voltage designated VBO.

When the device exceeds this break-overvoltage, it

enters the region of negative dynamic resistance.

The diode remain in conduction state until the current

trough it drops what is term the holding current, which is
normally designated by the letters IH.

Calculate the rms value and the power applied by a TRIAC to a

10 load from 230 Vrms 50Hz with a control period of 50.0ms
