Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participant will :

1) Have detailed knowledge of all hazards with High Pressure Jetting
2) Understand the principles of water jetting, type of equipment to
be use and system
3) Understand the type PPE being use and all the safety precaution

Video 1

Definition
High Pressure Water Jetting (HP Jetting) is :
the use of high energy streams of water either
for cleaning, cutting or removal of solid
materials.

Responsibilities
Operator(s) are responsible to:

Attend the HP jetting awareness

Carry out the job with compliance to all the safety requirement
Correct PPE to be worn

Barriers and safety signs are kept in place

Video 1

Hazard
When high pressure water jet cleaning (hydro
jetting) is in progress, the particular hazards are:
Piercing of the skin by the water jet,
Flying debris from the cleaning operations,
Release of hazardous materials into the

atmosphere from dislodged deposits,

Noise of the cleaning operation that may
damage hearing or drown out the sound of an

alarm,
Difficulty in breathing in confined space due to
the high water vapor content in the air

Electrostatic charging of nozzles and lances.

Hazard
(Continued) :
Un-authorized personnel interfere with the job
Reactive force generated by the discharge of water, creating a backward
thrust against the Jetting Gun
Slip, Trip and Fall hazard at the worksite

Precaution
The following safety precautions shall be observed when high pressure water

jet cleaning (hydro jetting) is in progress:

A Supervisor / Leadman shall be designated for controlling all work
involving hydro jetting and to be onsite when the job is in progress.

All operating areas shall be barricaded off with suitable barriers to

prevent accidental entry of any un-authorized personnel.
Signs to be displayed :

DANGER HIGH PRESSURE WATER BLASTING, KEEP OUT !!

AUTHORISED PERSONNEL ONLY.
Entry into the area must be authorized by the Supervisor / Leadman.

HP jetting can only be carried out by a team of at least 2 personnel.

Precaution
(Continue)
All high pressure equipment shall be earthed before work starts and during
operation, to prevent the development of electrostatic charges between
the lance and the workplace.
Appropriate personal protective equipment shall be worn when operating
high pressure water jet equipment.
These PPE must be worn :
Safety Helmets
Safety goggles or a full hood with face shield
Waterproof clothing
Hearing protection

Video 3

Suitable Safety gloves, and safety footwear

Note : Safety Glasses are Not suitable

Precaution
(Continue)
All high pressure equipment shall be isolated and de-pressurized before
being left unattended.
Correct Safety Instruction shall be provided before use the equipment
Ensure the area are free from any loose items and debris to avoid
dangerous flying projectile(s).
Operator must have good access to the work site
Always use Safe Working Platforms and Do Not Use Ladders for the work

Precaution
(Continue)
All personnel involved with the water jetting operation must be in position
prior to start up
The pressure at the unit should be built up gradually. The lowest pressure
necessary to complete the job should be use.

Worker ID Card
Any person injured by high pressure
water jetting must be taken to hospital for
immediate attention, Medical Staff must be
informed caused of injury was the result of
high pressure jetting.
This card must be carried at all times
when they are working.

Checks To Be Made
Hoses
1. Hoses must have the correct rating and size, where hoses must be higher
rating than the pressure pump.
2. All fittings and couplings must be in good condition and correct pressure
rating
3. Hoses, fitting and nozzles must be checked for signs of damage or wear.
Any leaks must be rectify before work begins
4. Hose protectors / Whip-lashes must be in place
5. Hoses must be located to avoid being run over by vehicles or causing trip
hazards
6. Hoses (with Nozzle) must be secured under the armpit before operation of
high pressure water jetting machine.

Checks To Be Made
Permit To Work
1. A valid Permit To Work is in place.
2. If the job carried out in Confined Space, all the
necessary precaution must be incompliance.
3. A minimum of two person to carry out the job

Checks To Be Made
Compressor and Pump
1. The equipment has been inspected and certify by third party inspection
2. Lube oil, water and hydraulic fluids has been check and the gauge level
are correct.
3. Pressure gauge must function properly
4. Repair and maintenance shall be in accordance with manufacturers
standards, and to be done by a competent mechanic.

Checks To Be Made
Jetting lance and nozzles
1. Nozzle must be clean and no signs of debris or damage
2. Jetting guns trigger mechanism must be working correctly
3. Connector part must be in good condition

Checks To Be Made
Electrical Parts
1. Any electrical part has been inspected Any electrical parts must be
protected from water splash or mist
2. All the switch and gauge must function properly
3. Emergency Stop Button must function properly

Communication
Before starting the work, team members will agree on a code signals or

means of communication to be use during operation.
