CBA Provides The Pause That Refreshes NFL
NFL Players take a much needed break before the rigors of two-a-day
training camps begin
Now that NFL clubs have concluded their off-season workout programs, the CBA
mandates vacation time for veteran players. During the ten (10) consecutive days
immediately prior to the mandatory veteran reporting date for each club’s pre-season
training camp, no veteran players, except those players discussed below, may participate
in any club organized workouts or other organized football activity of any kind.
Veteran players not subject to the 10-day rule are: (1) Quarterbacks; (2) Players on the
Injured Reserve, Physically Unable to Perform, or Non-Football Injury list at the end of
the previous season; (3) Players who failed a club physical after the last game of the
previous season; (4) Players who sustained an injury in the off-season; and, (5) Players
who had off-season surgery. These players may be asked to participate in club activity
during this ten (10) day period.
The CBA schedule also provides that NFL clubs can not require veteran players (other
than quarterbacks and injured players) to report to the club’s official pre-season training
camp earlier than fifteen (15) days prior to its first scheduled pre-season game. Since the
first weekend of pre-season games for most clubs takes place from August 7th to the 9th
this year, most clubs will have their veterans report for training camp between July 23rd
and the 25th. Therefore, veteran players will have at least ten days off starting July 13th to
the 15th.
The chart below indicates the individual clubs training camp reporting dates.
