Introduction
Billy Elliot is a boy who lives with his father, Jackie, and his brother, Tony,
Everington, a small mining town in England. Both his father and his brother are miners,
and are immersed in a long strike that leads them to deplete scarce resources at the
disposal. Billy, much to his regret, practice boxing, a sport instilled by his father, and that
is a tradition not only his family, but also all the people.
However, one day, during your workouts, Billy sees the girls who learn ballet. He
remains a good time looking, and decides to imitate them. The teacher of ballet, Miss
Wilkinson, note in Billy an unusual talent for dance, and encourages him to attend their
classes. But that is not easy in a place like Everington, where it is considered that the boys
must only box or play football, and with such complicated economic situation.
Billy goes more enthusiastic with the ballet, and teaches hidden from his father and
his brother. One day you Billy the opportunity arises of an audition to win a scholarship
at the Royal Ballet, one of the most important dance schools. After much rehearsing with
Miss Wilkinson, Billy can't go to hearing, since he has to attend a trial against his brother,
by damage to a police horse.
One afternoon the father of Billy see your child dancing, and remains puzzled that
what this is capable of doing. From that moment their conservative mentality and Tony,
with respect to the dance, changes. Thus, when Billy has the chance of another hearing in
London, it is his own father, with financial support from all the people, who accompanied
him to the hearing. Billy approves and is selected to be part of the prestigious Royal Ballet
School.

The relevant scene or the characters evolution during the lm

The scenes selected corresponds when Billy

practice boxing (00:06:39), when it starts to get excited
for dance (00:09:35), when it manages to be a recognized
dancer.

These scenes allows us to see the evolution

and change in Billy. As gender roles affect their
life and you compel practice a sport like boxing
that is not to his liking. On the other hand, when
the boy see the dance, we see as his needs and
tastes are changing, adapting to it, not trying to please others in his environment.

The relevant life-span development topic

Adolescent identity formation (James Marcia, 1966)

According to Erikson, the formation of identity tends to be a lengthy and complex
process of self-definition. First of all, this process involves a continuity between past
present and future. This self-identification will help adolescent to lay the groundwork for
the social comparisons. Last highlight that it is sense of identity is to give direction and
meaning to life.
James Marcia tried to refine the theory of Erikson and proposed four States in the
formation of identity, revolving around the commitment and crisis:
1. IDENTITY ACHIEVEMENT STATUS (crisis and commitment): the
commitment adopted by these guys and girls is the result of the personal search.
2. FORECLOSURE STATUS (not crisis and commitment): commitment is the
result of pressure from the family or social environment.
3. MORATORIUM STATUS (no commitment and crisis): have not acquired any
commitment because they are still in a situation of search Active or moratorium,
weighing different alternatives and without having taken a decision.
4. DIFFUSION STATUS (no crisis and no commitment): have not acquired any
commitment because even not have raised it and they have not initiated an active
pursuit or exploration, remaining in a State of indefinite or diffuse identity which
do not see the need to leave.

The status of identity in which one or a teenager is going to influence their behavior:
the girls and boys in achievement of identity or moratorium tend to show more maturity
and autonomy, who present a foreclosure identity tend to be more conformist and
conventional, while the diffusion of identity is often related to subjects that are distant
and apathetic. Although the commitments made will depend ultimately on the personal
decision, this decision will be conditioned by cultural and family environment factors.

Social-role hypothesis (Eagly, 1987)

According to this theory, even though it is true that determines gender biology that
is the culture defines the traits and behaviors for men and women accepted. The society
and culture determines that is who must do each gender. Just thus sex woman or man
happens to be called feminine or masculine. It Hopes that the men and women behave in
a consistent Manner with Their culturally defined gender roles, otherwise, it will be so
negative evaluated within the society. This theory says that if cultural pressures kept men
and women as different, your personality will also be it, since this is molded by the role.
Eagly called traits attributed women how communality and attributes related to men
as agency, although on certain occasions and different levels, both sexes can adopt two
types of features.
Communality is orientation that emphasized connectedness to others (including
traits of emotionality and sensitivity to others). Agency is orientation toward individual
action and achievement that emphasizes traits of dominance, independence, assertiveness
and competitiveness.
Importantly, children become more flexible as they grow, although adolescence is
a critical step to violations of role and gender stereotypes. The issue of gender
intensification, which refers to increasing intolerance of deviation from expectations,
stereotypes and gender role appears. To this are added the hormonal changes that increase
the pressure to conform to the roles that marks the society and culture for each sex.
In addition, the thoughts of adolescents, their perceptions and the expectations of
their peers can reach affect their behavior, their ways of acting. All this intensified anger
decreasing gender to become the specification gender, that is, greater flexibility, at the
end of adolescence, about the role of each gender.

Elaborating on how the selected scene illustrates the principle/theory identied.

James Marcia (Adolescent identity formation) and Eagly (Social-role hypothesis)
Influences the father and society to their self-identity and rupture of gender roles.
The main theme that is this movie is the need that each see their dreams fulfilled.
Throughout the film we can see how Billy constantly strives to defend their beliefs,
values, and dreams, from social expectations, against the role that culture has set for
himself, his past and sue economic status.
On the other hand is the issue of the relationship between father and son. Its two
generations colliding by their expectations for the future, by gender roles and, in general,
by different points of view. Although, finally, father overcome prejudice which has
towards his son and life that takes, and he will end up supporting his son in the struggle
to fulfill their dreams.
Finally, mentioning the subject of the stereotypes gender and roles gender are
spoken in the film. Billy Elliot is a boy who questions the stereotypes created by the
society. The culture has taught ballet, for example, is for girls and gay guys. But the boy
does not give up and confronts what society is established, what his family believes,
successfully overcoming all obstacles and most support family and social at the end. Billy
fight against gender intensification. Peers and family and make fun of the guy dancing
oppose it, are ridiculous for a boy to engage in a social activity that is culturally and girls.
Our protagonist is highly contested, shall be punished for their actions, you will feel very
frustrated.

In short, the scenes are closely linked to the theories of James Marcia and Eagly.
The boxing scene shows how Billy is influenced by what her family expects of it. The
boy is forming its own identity, happens to be and do what the society and culture teaches
him, to create their own self-concept. We could say that Billy moves from a mortgaged
identity or a diffuse identity, create their self-identity

In addition Billy confronts all social and cultural stereotypes, you must prove that
the only thing important is to do what you want, what you like. The protagonist teaches
us how it should not exist roles and stereotypes, as men and women can do the same
activities, with more or less difficulty, but that we all are equal and must be true to
ourselves.
