President Obama argues that a negotiated limitation on Iran's ability to produce a nuclear weapon
is the best possible path to reducing the threat of war. He believes that the approach suggested by
Prime Minister Netanyahu will lead to collapsing the negotiations, accelerating Irans pursuit of
nuclear weapons, and ultimately to war.
Prime Minister Netanyahu argues that any negotiated settlement that leaves Iran with the capacity
to eventually produce a nuclear weapon is unacceptable and will lead to war. Israel may initiate
that war with military action against Iran's nuclear facilities.
The Iranian government argues that it has the same rights as any other nation to pursue whatever
is necessary to ensure its national security, even if that means going to war.
Basically all parties agree that some paths lead to war, although they may disagree on which one.
These differing assessments of the path to war make the situation even more unstable.
The nations of the world that are not a party to this conflict are still at risk should such a war break
out. As with other conflicts in that region, the potential for a large scale conflagration is real.
One interim step to back away from that abyss is to lower the threat posed by such a conflict. That
process is assisted by understanding the root causes of the conflict and the nature of the threat.
Divide and Conquer. Fundamental root causes of this conflict are the divisions within the Human
Family. The Human species evolved down separate pathways. Each group adapted to the
particular ecology of the area in which they lived. The Gods or Spirits incorporated into the daily
life of each group partly reflected the diversity of the Earth's ecological systems. A culture
developed in the desert related to the Natural World differently than a culture developed in the rain
forest. Living on a planet with a non-uniform ecology, the Human species differentiated into
different cultures and learned separation.
From the different ecologically-determined cultures, tribes or clans emerged some that viewed
themselves more different than other clans or tribes, rather than perceiving the underlying unity
within the Human Family. Such differences held the potential for conflict.
In modern times, such groups became nations, defined by artificial lines drawn on a map. The focus
shifted from sustaining the group through harmonious relationship with the group's ecological
support system to a group identification divorced from any particular ecology.
At times, a leader would emerge proclaiming one particular Human group to be better than another
Human group. Or, proclaiming some other Human group to be a threat. Or asserting the right to
invade and dominate other groups. Such leaders created division to strengthen their own power.
Such created divisions sometimes led to war between groups.
A favorite dividing strategy is to proclaim the spiritual practices of one group to be superior to the
spiritual practices of others. The "One True Religion" claim repeatedly laid the foundation for
horrendous acts of brutality.
The Hawaiian experience of this phenomenon can be found in the conversion of the Hawaiian
political leadership to Christianity by the missionaries. The missionaries not only brought
Christianity to the islands. They also brought the Devil. The missionaries taught the new Christians
that the practitioners of the ancient Hawaiian religion -- which the missionaries called pagans -were agents of the Devil.
Based on this teaching, the Hawaiian Christians hunted down and killed the Kahunas of the
traditional religion. A huge battle eventually took place between a Hawaiian Christian army and a
Hawaiian traditional army. Tens of thousands of people died in that battle. The Christian army
won and the traditional practitioners disappeared from public view. The destruction of the
spiritual foundation of the traditional Hawaiian civilization was a first step in destroying the
civilization itself.
This type of history is repeated throughout the ages. The end of this perpetuation of religious wars
requires every religion to acknowledge the right of every other religion to exist and pursue its own
practices. More comprehensively, peace will come when everyone acknowledges that they are part
of one family with a single planetary base of support.
Splitting the Atom. The one element that makes the current conflicts in the Middle East
qualitatively more dangerous than other conflicts is the potential for use of nuclear weapons.
That potential exists because the Human Family chose to pursue the development of nuclear power
despite the clear danger of accidents, human error, or other events leading to catastrophe and
despite the potential for anyone with a nuclear power plant to develop a nuclear bomb.
The attempt to limit access to nuclear weapons through non-proliferation agreements inevitably
failed. As long as those nations with nuclear weapons insisted on keeping them, other nations
sought the same capacity.
Replacing nuclear power with renewable energy and pursuing new energy technologies that are
ecologically sane would significantly reduce the threat that additional nations will develop nuclear
weapons and potentially reduce the threat posed by a potential conflict in the Middle East.
Applying that potential to the current situation, the nations of the world could agree to finance the
phasing out of all nuclear power plants in Iran through the implementation of renewable energy.
With no reason for continuing the nuclear pathway, other than development or continued
production of nuclear weapons, the Iranian choice would be transparent to the rest of the world
and could be addressed accordingly.
A longer term peace agreement should include de-nuclearization of every nation in the Middle East,
foreclosing both power plants and weapons, and demilitarization of the area.
Individual and Group Responsibility. The political leadership within the countries that are party
to the current dispute includes many people who seem dedicated to destroying our ecological
support system and Human civilization.
Those who pursue pollution of our planet without concern for the consequences or who pursue war
at the risk of drawing other nations into a nuclear holocaust are clearly a threat to the Human
Family. They cannot be allowed to determine the future of our species.
Is there any party to this dispute that does not have the blood of innocents on their hands? If not,
then let's stop the posturing of claiming the moral high ground. Nobody is right if everybody is
wrong.
Is there any party to this dispute that is willing to have their existence extinguished? If not, then
let's stop pretending to be for peace, or even any interim agreements to reduce tensions, while at
the same time proclaiming a goal of extinguishing another party to the dispute.
To the contrary, when people believe that their survival is threatened, they are more likely to act
irrationally based on fear, rather than settle any disputes rationally based on love or even self
interest.
Has violence brought peace to the Middle East? If not, then let's stop threatening violence while
pretending to be seeking peace.
Is there a party to this dispute that has not broken some previous agreement? If not, then let's stop
the allegations about who can be trusted and who cannot.
A foundation question to be answered by all parties is whether there is one Human Family or not. If
any party believes that the answer to that question is "no," then what divisions does that party
claim transcend the unity of our species? Religion? Race? Nation? Tribe? Culture? A conscious
Human knows that these are all artificial divisions. Those who would divide the Human family in
such a way are preaching a lie!
That does not mean that group identification cannot lead to right action.
If the Jews are the Chosen People, what better to have been chosen for than to bring peace and
tranquility to the Human Family? That is a far higher calling than participating in and encouraging
the headlong rush to Armageddon.
If Christians are following the teachings of Christ, what better guide than love. Love thy neighbor as
thyself. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. These teachings are not compatible
with pursuit of a nuclear war designed to bring Jesus back as leader of a born again Christian Army
to do battle with the anti-Christ. A true Christian would call that blasphemy.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you precisely because they are you. We are all
interconnected and created from the primal material out of which all creation emerged/emerges.
Islam calls for unification of the individual with the Divine. That is a deeply personal journey.
Those who claim that unification can be achieved through Human sacrifice, whether at the level of
violence against an individual "non-believer" or the level of war between groups, are leading their
followers away from unity with their inner divinity and the unity of all Allahs creations. Following
such leaders into war is diverting the path of the faithful from surrender to the Divine into denying
the fundamental divinity of all creation.
At the same time, no one group within the Human Family should be allowed to determine the future
for the whole family. The children of Abraham need to find peace within their own family before
their disputes drag everyone into chaos. Their Bible says that God set before them life and
prosperity and death and destruction with the free will to choose.
Their God encouraged them to choose life that they may live. Deuteronomy 30:19. By that choice
will they be known.
Will the legacy of the Persian Empire be the destruction of civilization or the birthing of new level of
Human interactions that produce harmony? The choice is set before the descendants of that group
within the Human Family.
Making Peace. Any ass can start a war. A peacemaker requires patience, intelligence, empathy,
and creativity. Those who are parties to the conflict have a conflict of interest in the outcome.
Political leaders feel compelled to take positions popular with their followers, whether those
positions lead to peace or not.
Perhaps there is a need for a new body to be created -- a Council of the Wise to be convened to
address the current conflict and provide solutions. The Council members would be truly neutral
parties. The Kingdom of Hawai'i offers to provide Hawaiian Kupuna (elders) trained in conflict
resolution techniques used for thousands of years to assist the Council. The Council would be a
temporary body given the sole charge of developing a short term and long term plan for peace in
the Middle East.
The Council would present drafts of the plans publicly and invite comments. Once the Council
issues the final plan, the nations of the world would be asked to endorse the plan. If the Council has
succeeded, there will be an overwhelming endorsement that will make it difficult for the parties to
refuse to implement the plan.
While the Council is deliberating, there will be a cease fire in all respects. For example, the parties
will agree to stop making hostile statements and taking hostile actions. A status quo will be in place
regarding new settlements by Israel. There will be no tunnels built and no rockets launched. All
those engaged in covert actions will stand down. At the same time, conditions will be improved for
those who are suffering from the conflict.
The details of the cease fire elements within the overall plan can be identified once the Council is
convened.
Concurrently with the establishment of the Council, a worldwide celebration of peace can be
organized, including venues in every country that is a party to the conflict. A possible theme for the
celebration is Play for Peace/Pray for Peace/Be Peaceful.
The Future. What is peace? Peace is mutual respect for diverse practices and beliefs and the
freedom to choose one's own path. Peace exists when people are happy and living in harmony with
each other and with the rest of the Natural World. Now is the time to decide on the Human Future.
The pathways are clearly laid out before us. We can choose to rise above our bloody history and
create a world in which the happiness of all and harmony with Nature is the goal.
We can continue to live in a heightened state of fear and stress with the constant threat of conflict
for more generations. We can light the fuse and blow up everything.
Will homo sapiens mean knowledgeable Humans, who never progressed beyond the limitations of
their historical programming, or wise Humans, who saw the abyss and turned down a different
path to truly evolve towards their highest potential?
The Kingdom is prepared to assist in any way possible to bend the arc of history towards peace.
