Scansionisthetermforthemarkingofthelengthofthevowelsandthedivisionsofa
lineintofeet(seeabove).Itisimportanttounderstandmeterandscansiontoknowthe
correctrhythmofthelineswhenreadingaloudforthefulleffectsofapoem.
WhenreadingapoemaloudinLatin,holdalongvoweltwiceaslongasashortone,
likehalfnotesandquarternotesinmusic,anduseexpression,alsolikeinmusic.Donot
readthelinestoomechanicallyasifkeepingbeattoadrum!Varyyourvoice
appropriatelyforthemeaningofthewordswhilerespectingthemeter.Payattentionto
howthepoetvariesthebeatthroughoutthepoemtoquickenorslowdownthepaceof
thewords.
