LESSON 1

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the Earth. (Psalm 100:1)
Joy: alegria,regozijo

To shout = aclamar

Lord: Senhor
Psalm: Salmos
1. START OFF - Breaking the ice
(Introducing yourself and starting a conversation)
The first step you must take when you start learning a
foreign language is learning how to establish an initial
communication.
There are many ways to start a conversation. Here you
have some examples:
- Hi \ Hello
- How are you? \ How are you doing? \ Whats up?
- Whats your name?
- My name is \ I am \ Im
- Its nice to meet you.\ Im glad to meet youIts a
pleasure to meet you (When you start the
conversation)
- It was nice to meet you. \ It was a pleasure to meet
you.\ Im glad I met you (When you are finishing a
conversation)
- When you take leave\part you can say: Bye \ Byebye\ Good-bye \ See you around (more informal)\
See you(more informal)

Take a look at the following model of an initial

conversation and practice with a partner: (Replace the
names in the dialogue appropriately and feel free to
replace the underlined words according to your
preference)
A) Hi, how are you?
B) Hello, Im fine and you?
A) Im fine too! So, whats your name?
B) My name is Mark and yours?
A) I am Paul. And Oh look thats my bus leaving I have
to run mate. It was nice to meet you! See you around!
B) B)It was nice to meet you too. Hurry up man! See you!
Note: In the dialogue above, both men are feeling
FINE, but you can change that information to tell your
partner how you are actually feeling.
In case you are doing really good, here are some optional
answers you may give:

I'm
ok/fine/good/great
,thanks.And you?

I can't
complain!/I'm very
well!

Appreciating the
things I have! /
Everything is
marvelous!

In case you are not on your best days, you can say:

I'm not really well!

I've been better!

Taking deep
breaths! /Trying to
stay positive /
Ready for
tomorrow!

After you started a conversation, it might be

interesting to keep that dialogue going if you really
want to learn more about the person youre talking
to You can do that by asking more personal
information about he/she For example:
- What do you do? (O que voc faz relacionado a
trabalho ou estudos)
- What do you work with? ( Com /o que voc trabalha)
- How do you like to spend your free time? (O que voc
gosta de fazer em suas horas livres)
- How old are you? (Quantos anos voc tem?)
- Where are you from? ( Da onde voc ?) Are you a
local? (Voc daqui mesmo?)
- Whats your cell phone number? (Qual o nmero do seu
celular?)
- Are you on the social networks? (Voc est em alguma
rede social?)
These are only a few conversation topics you may bring
up whenever you are starting a conversation, to break
the ice and meet people. After you and your new friend

become closer, you may also ask where he/she lives for
example and also inquire about their relationship status.
- Whats your address? (Qual o seu endereo?)
- Are you in a relationship right now? (Voc est em
algum relacionamento no momento?)
And so on and on and on. Possibilities are endless!
Ok, so youve just learned how to start a conversation
in English as well as how to make the conversation
keep going and get acquainted with the person. Now
Its time to practice it!
2. YOUR TURN PRACTICING!
Choose a partner among your classmates and make a
dialogue trying to include as many topics as you can.
First youre going to write the dialogue, practice it and
then present it in front of the class.
3. LEARNING VOCABULARY

Greetings:
Good Morning (from the moment you wake
up till noon)
Good Afternoon (from after noon till it
starts getting dark)
Good evening (this greeting is usually
used when you arrive at a place and is
already dark/night)

Good night (by the time is already night

and you are leaving a place, also before
going to bed to sleep)
Aside from the spoken greetings, that are
some manners or gestures people use
when greeting someone. Those gestures
are directly related to cultural habits and
may also vary from person to person. Here
are some common non-spoken greetings:
To bow
To give a kiss on the cheek

To wave

To hug

To shake hands

The Japanese Minister took a bow to his new assistant.

They shake hands everytime they close a new business

deal.

In many South American countries people are used to hug

each other whenever they meet.

The Queens wave is a great gesture to her subjects.

Her father kisses her cheek tenderly.
