Situated above the main bar of the ‘Friendship Inn’, halfway through the village on the ‘bog side’ (not the sea side).
The stock is eclectic, anything unusual, interesting or old, from Victorian to 1970’s. Bric-a- brac, books,
china, glassware, costume jewellery, postcards, brass, copper, treen, etc. There is a good selection of
30’s to 70’s collectables. The shop includes “Frock Off” a room full of vintage and nearly new clothes
and accessories. If it’s wacky, weird, dreadful or wonderful, you can find it here. The Inn Gallery is
downstairs and offers original paintings, prints, cards, and driftwood items. Tea and coffee is available.

The Welsh Flannel geometric patchworks were the focus
of the inaugural exhibition at The Jen Jones Welsh Quilt
Centre. We are thrilled that, at last these wonderful artifacts
have become universally recognised. Our new exhibition we
hope will be a further revelation in terms of the enormous
spectrum within the Welsh quilting tradition. We will feature
the fiery reds including red paisleys and paisley shawl quilts.
Alongside these will hang the contrasting and diverse cotton
patchworks and wholecloths that represent a major portion
of the output during the 19th and early 20th century.

38 Helen Hallesy: Welsh Ceramics


Helen Hallesy is a native of Pontardawe in the Swansea
valley and has been trading from her shop in Swansea since 1984,
under the name of ‘Magpie Antiques’. Although the business dealt in
general antiques, Helen has a long-standing interest in Welsh ceramics,
and has published a number of books and articles on varying aspects of
the potteries in South Wales.
The shop is now closed, but Helen continues with her research and active
participation in her role as ceramic advisor to Swansea Museum services. She
is also a council member of the Royal Institution of South Wales. Titles of her
publications include the following: “THE GLAMORGAN POTTERY, SWANSEA
1814-38”, published 1995, “YNYSMEUDWY POTTERY”, an offprint from “Welsh
Ceramics in Context Part II”, published 2005, and “SWANSEA POTTERY
COLLECTORS’ EXHIBITION 2006”. She has also published a number of articles
for ‘Minerva’, journals of Swansea History. All of these titles are available to purchase by contacting her email address.
Helen is available for general enquiries, buying and selling, consultation and valuations; a ‘search and find’
