CHILDREN’S HEALTH – TOMORROW’S WEALTH

Message from Dr. H. Mahler - Director of the World Health Organization
Organization for WORLD HEALTH DAY, 1984
(Philippine Nursing Association Journal, 1984)

REACTION:

The article gives me quite a realization about the importance of

children’s health. It has a voice that urge one’s country to prioritize the care
for children, because, as what the title informs, the health of the children is
very much relevant to what may become of our future. It greatly affects our
status of living. As we may all know, it all begins in the womb. Before we
reach the climax of our health potential, a healthy lifestyle starts at the
bottom, from the start, from the beginning of our life. And no person can do
utmost caring for us other than our own beloved parents, our family, and our
significant others. I mean, who else would be glad to see you grow up so
healthy but those who love us. And since the physical and caring needs we
receive are rendered to us, most especially by our mothers, they must also
be properly educated on how to take care of a child. Moreover, it is not
enough to receive physical needs, but, the love and passionate care is very
much important for the sake of a healthy relationship with each other, and
with other people as well. It is also stated that the government support also
affects the health outcomes of a child. Societal and government support may
allow many opportunities for the children, and also the mother for health
improvement. But then, one of the problems pertaining government support,
is that, the rich are given more privilege than the indigent people, especially
those who are in barrios and remote areas who are most likely to being
ignored because of distance, which results to lack of facilities, and which
leads to the poor health care of the people living there – the ones who needs
health care the most.

REFLECTION:

Many things can be learned from the article of Dr. Mahler, but one
thing that really caught my attention in the whole selection, is the part
where Dr. Mahler mentioned that “health care as the right of all people, not
only the better-off or the urban populations…” I’d hate to say that he/she is
right. I really believe on what he/she said, because, according to my
observations, rich people are given more privileges than the poor. If I would
become a nurse someday (hopefully), I’d treat people with equity and
fairness, because, as a matter of experience, it somehow hurts when people
treat you less importantly than others, when in fact, you also need as much
as others do.
SUMMARY

The theme affords an occasion to convey a worldwide audience the

message that children are a priceless resource. The investment in child
health is a direct entry point to improved social development, productivity,
and better way of life; thus, children’s health is tomorrow’s wealth. Care for
the child’s health starts even before conception. The romantic image of the
mother isolated with her child in a closed, loving, caring circle does not
reflect the true situation. Whatever happens to the community around the
mother and child, can have a direct impact on the health and security to
both of them. It is pointless to recommend something if it is not accessible or
available. The mother and child needs to have an environment that will
ensure their health. Beyond the immediate physical needs are the equally
important needs for love and understanding which stimulates the healthy
development of the child. Good health for mother and child is a measure of
society’s capacity for caring. The emergence of new health problems of
mothers and children both in developed and in urban slums, should be kept
in mind. Better health services have to be made accessible to all who need
them. The mothers and children – those who are often been neglected; too
much seems to have been spent on high technology , often limited to the
capital cities, where as little care was available for the population at large.
Closely related to this is the concept of equity, with a basic level of health
care as the right of all people, not only the better-off or the urban
populations or one class in society. Individuals and communities must
participate in health. Child’s health is the responsibility of both individual and
the family, especially the mother, as well as the government and society.
Whatever can be done to ensure the health and well-being of children, helps
to lay the foundations of health in adult life and of health for those children’s
children. Let us make this World Health Day an occasion of deep, irrevocable
resolve to construct better society where the children of the world will have a
healthier life and a better chance than we had to achieve more of humanity’s
potential.
