Linear Circuit Analysis (LCA) - EE217: Eq. of Straight Line Eq. of Straight Line

This document outlines a lecture on linear circuit analysis and the mathematical concept of derivatives. It discusses the physical and mathematical aspects of derivatives, including how the derivative of a function represents its slope and rate of change. Several examples are provided to demonstrate how to calculate derivatives and slopes for different functions graphically. These include finding the derivative of a car's distance over time to determine its velocity, and using derivatives to determine slopes at different points on waveform graphs.

It is all about rate of change

Conceptual understanding of concept of Slope
discussed in previous lecture
The derivative of a mathematical function may be
graphically understood as its slope when plotted on
a graph
The derivative of a function y=f(x) w.r.t. x is usually
denoted by

A car is travelling in a direct path (no turns)

Suppose the car moves at a rate such that its
distance increases steadily (linearly) over time from
the start
Plot the distance covered w.r.t. time on graph
The plot will be a straight line on the graph

The process of finding the derivative of a function is
called Differentiation.

Known Scenario
A Travelling Car

Calculate the time derivative of the distance covered

by the car
Derivative: Rate of change of the cars position w.r.t.
time
A quantity representing the cars velocity
Distance

Known Scenario
A Travelling Car

Suppose the distance traveled by the car increased

exponentially over time
It began its travel in slow movements, but later on,
covers more distance with each passing interval
The rate of change of distance covered (dy/dt)
(velocity), would not be constant, but would increase

The height of points on the velocity graph

correspond to the rates-of-change (or slope) of
points at corresponding times on the position graph

What if we are interested to plot acceleration?

We can estimate the value of the derivative at any

point on the curve by plotting slope there
Draw the tangent at that point and estimate its slope
