VMWare Workstation Optimization

These documents contain various performance tweaks and configuration options for VMware Workstation, Fusion, and Player virtual machines. Some of the key tweaks include: 1) Disabling VM RAM swap files to keep memory in host RAM for better performance. 2) Enabling hardware virtualization for supported guest operating systems to improve performance of virtualized workloads. 3) Disabling Unity mode which is useful for desktop VMs but not server VMs to avoid unnecessary overhead. 4) Additional tweaks like disabling memory trimming, page sharing, and snapshots when not in use to optimize disk and memory I/O performance.

Settings.ini file is located file either at C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Worksta

For VMware Fusion on Mac and Linux instead of mainMem.useNamedFile you have to s
et mainMem.backing flag.

Virtualized HV is fully supported for virtual hardware version 9 or later VMs on
hosts that support Intel VT-x and EPT or AMD-V and RVI. To enable virtualized H
V, select VM->Settings and navigate to the processor settings screen. Check the
box next to "Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI."

Tweak: Disable Unity Mode
Unity might be a great feature for running virtual desktops operating systems, b
ut it is not the most useful for virtualizing server OS. An annoying sign of ena
bled unity is GuestAppsCache or caches folder with a large number of files in it
s appData-subfolder. In order to disable it for your VM, open your .vmx file in
a text editor and add the following line:
isolation.tools.unity.disable="TRUE"
unity.allowCompositingInGuest="FALSE"
unity.enableLaunchMenu = "FALSE"
unity.showBadges = "FALSE"
unity.showBorders = "FALSE"
unity.wasCapable = "FALSE"

Disable memory trimming:

Disable page sharing:
sched.mem.pshare.enable = "FALSE"
Disable snapshots if you are not using them and prefer full backups:
snapshot.disabled = "TRUE"
Disable scale down of memory allocation:
MemAllowAutoScaleDown = "FALSE"
