CHAPTER 3 ~ BIODIVERSITY

3.1 Diversity of Living Organisms

BiodiversityLiving organisms are living things, by then plants or animals.
Classification of Animals
Animals

Vertebrates
(animal with
backbones)

Fish

Amphibians

Reptiles

invertebrates
(animal without
backbones)

Birds

Mammals

Vertebrates

Amphibians

Characteristic features
1. Body is covered with slimy scales.
2. Have fins for moving about and for
body balance.
3. Breathe through gills .
4. Cold-blooded (body temperature
changes with surrounding
temperature).
5. Carry out external fertilization
(eggs are fertilized outside the
females body).
1. Body is covered with a moist skin.

2. Adults can live on land and in water.

3. The young (tadpoles) live in water and
breathe through gills.
4. Adults breathe through their lungs and
moist skin.
5. Cold-blooded.
6. Carry out external fertilization.

Birds

Mammals

Invertebrates

Characteristic features
1. Some live on the land and some in
water.
2. Body is covered with hard dry scales.
3. Some have legs (lizards) and some
have no legs (snakes).
4. Breathe through their lungs.
5. Cold-blooded.
6. Carry out internal fertilization (eggs
are fertilised inside the females body).
7. Lay eggs with leathery shells to
prevent drying.
1. Body is covered with feathers .
2. Have wings and most of them can
fly.
3. Breathe through their lungs.
4. Warm-blooded (has a constant body
temperature).
5. Carry out internal fertilisation.
6. Lay eggs with hard shells for
protection.
1. Body is covered with hair or fur .
2. Have two external ears.
3. Breathe through their lungs.
4. Warm-blooded.
5. Carry out internal fertilisation.
6. Give birth to young and suckle
them.

Characteristic features

1. Animals without a backbone.

2. Small in size because they have no
backbone to support the body weight.
3. Vary in size, shape and the way of
living.
4. There are more invertebrates than
vertebrates. About 90% of
invertebrates are insect.
5. Example: prawn, crab, snail, spider,
grasshopper.

Classification of Plants

Dicotyledons

Monocotyledons

Differences between Dicotyledons and Monocotyledons

Dicotyledon

Monocotyledon

Non-flowering Plants

Ferns

Have chlorophyll
Photosynthetic
Reproduce from spores

Mosses

Have chlorophyll
Photosynthetic
Reproduce from spores

Fungi

Have no
chlorophyll
Obtain food
from other living
or dead
organisms
Reproduce from
spores except
for yeast (by
budding)

Algae

Have
chlorophyll
Photosynthe
tic
Reproduce
by cell
division
