Magnetic Particle Inspection Test

Apparatus:

Magnetic yoke
Cleaner
White color paint
Dry Ferromagnetic particles
Temperature sensor

Procedure:

Confirm the area to be examined with drawings or any other information.

Before MPI, clean the surface to be examined & all adjacent areas within at atleast I inch
using solvent cleaner.
Check the temperature of the test piece.
Apply white color paint to increase the contrast.
Induce magnetic field to the object using the magnetic yoke.
Apply wet ferromagnetic particles to the test piece.
Surface discontinuities are indicated by accumulation of magnetic particles which should
contrast with test surface.
Perform atleast two separate examinations on each area. During the second examination,
the lines of magnetic flux should be approximately perpendicular to those used during the
first examination.
Mark the relevant indications on the test piece with suitable marker.
After inspection thoroughly clean the test piece.

Precautions:

Generators, cables & coils must be serviced atleast once every one year.
Care should be taken as particles may blow off & disturb indication.
The lighting conditions for the inspection task are extremely important.
