EXPERIENCING JESUS THE ULTIMATE SERVANT LIVING HIS LIFE IN OUR LIVES
(PHILIPPIANS 2)
Jesus, when in His human body, did not rely on His own Divine nature and power to live and
serve others. Instead, Jesus experienced God’s supernatural Life living in, with and through
Him. At the end of His life, Jesus explained to His friends during a dinner how He had lived

His human life (John 13-17). Similarly, Paul explained to his friends in Philippi that they also
could experience life in the same way as Jesus lived. Christians can exchange their lives for
Christ’s Life and then allow the Risen Christ to live in, with and through them. When we
make this exchange, we experience the Mind and Life of Christ (Philippians 2:1-11).

From all eternity, Jesus existed in His uncreated, divine nature as Deity, equal with God the Father in
every way. This was before Jesus’ incarnation as a human. However, Jesus did not consider equality
with God as a state of existence to be clung onto and refuse to give up. For our salvation, Jesus
incarnated Himself as a true human and became God with us and one of us as a true human. Then, as
God in human form, The God-Human, Jesus emptied Himself, meaning, Jesus decided not to use His
own divine powers to live as a human. Instead, Jesus took the role of being a human servant of God
and lived as God originally designed humans to live, exchanging their lives for God’s life. And, finding
Himself as a human that is how he lived, exchanging the use of His own Divine Power for God’s
supernatural life and power in Him to live life.

The Bible was first divided into chapters by Stephen Langton (d. 1228 A.D./CE) or by Hugo de Sancto
Caro in the 13th century. Rabbi Modecai Nathan in 1445 A.D /CE put the Jewish Bible into verse form.
The first appearance of verses in the New Testament occurred in 1551 in the Greek text edited by
Robert Estienne. All of these men were great Bible scholars and their work in dividing the Bible into
chapters and verses has proved helpful. However, the careful student of the Bible should realize that
these divisions were not made by God but by humans. While the words of Scripture are inspired, the
divisions are not. Thus, if you feel that a chapter or paragraph division actually interrupts the original
literary structure of the author, make the division where you feel it most naturally occurs. Information
above is from International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, v.5, 2963, and The Layman's Bible
