Guided since our founding in 1912 by the missionary vision of the Paulists, committed to the mission of
Jesus, and dedicated to be welcoming to all, we, the community of St. Philip Neri, strive to reach out, to
reconcile and to promote unity for all Gods creations through worship, education, and service toward the
common good.
Pastoral Corner
Greetings!
Each year, the Pope selects a particular theme for the church to think about, pray about, become more aware
of, and talk about as a concentrated effort for growth in our parish communities. This Jubilee Year of Mercy (50th
anniversary of the closing of Vatican ll) begins December 8th. Following are some of the themes Pope Francis asks
us to reflect on this year:
*Jesus is the face of the Fathers mercy
Jesus of Nazareth is the face of the Fathers mercyhe reveals the mercy of God by his words, actions, and
person. We follow Jesus example when we open ourselves to the Fathers mercy by looking sincerely into the eyes
of our brothers and sisters, including those who are denied their dignity.
Personal reflection: How have you experienced the Fathers mercy in your own life? How might Jesus be
calling you to look sincerely into the eyes of those who are denied their dignity?
*Mercy is the beating heart of the Gospel
It is absolutely essential for the Church and for the credibility of her message that she herself live and testify to
mercy. Mercy is the beating heart of the Gospel. To live mercy, we must rediscover both the spiritual works of mercy
and the corporal works of mercy.
Personal reflection: Which spiritual works/corporal works of mercy are you especially called to practice?
*Mercy demands justice
True mercy, the mercy God gives to us and teaches us, demands justice, it demands that the poor find the way to
be poor no longerIt asks us--- the Churchall of us, to ensure that no one ever again stand in need of a soupkitchen, of makeshift-lodgings, of a service of legal assistance in order to have his legitimate rights recognized to live
and to work, to be fully a person.
Personal reflection: In your own life, and in your faith community, how do you work for justice? Do you
seek to address the root causes of problems that affect those who are vulnerable?
And of course---Mercy should begin firstin our personal relationships with each other.
Deo Gratias,
Barbara M. Harrison
MEMORIAL GARDEN
Each year we celebrate the Christmas season by offering
a Memorial Flower Garden. If you are interested in
helping to support this effort, please put your donation
in an envelope with your name written on the front as
giver and the name of the person you are
remembering. It can be placed in the Offertory basket,
taken to the parish office or mailed.
