Prisoners of Hope April 08
It is just over one month and two hundred and ten years since the fulfilment of one of the longest
Biblical prophecies that we have. On February 15, 1798, general Berthier (one of Napoleons' gener-
als) issued a proclamation in Rome informing Pope Pius the VI that his office should henceforth
not ―exercise any function‖. This capped the end of the 1260 day prophecy which covered the
―dark‖ ages and encompassed the slaughter of those whose voices cry out from beneath the altar;
all for their belief in the true Creator God of the universe.
The Bible, when discussing this issue, says ―And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to
death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast‖ Revelation
13:3. We understand from looking at history that the wound began to heal barely two years after
the end of the times, time and half a time. In March of 1800 a new pope, Pope Pius VII was elected
to replace his predecessor who had died less than seven months before the election.
Less than four years after this election of Pius VII, Napoleon formally recognised the Catholic
Church as the religion of France and signed a concordat with them, ―declaring that the state ac-
knowledged the Catholic Church as the religion of France, and called for the loyalty of the bishops
to the state.― We can thus see that the wound had already begun to heal less than a decade after it
had been inflicted. This brings us to February 11 1929 when the Lateran treaty, which once again
established Rome as a nation, was signed by Cardinal Gasparri (representing pope Pius XI) and
Benito Mussolini (representing King Victor Emmanuel III). Many Adventist commentators and
preachers that I have heard since my youth have often quoted this date as the date when the
―deadly wound was healed‖ arguing that Rome was once again a Religo-Political power.
I would like us to revisit this interpretation that continues to be used by Adventists. I believe that a
process was begun in 1929, but that the deadly wound was not healed in that year for two key rea-
sons.
Firstly, Revelation 13:10b tells us that ―He that killeth with the sword must be killed by the sword‖.
To understand what the sword is (as it cannot be the Word of God given that Roman Catholicism INSIDE THIS ISSUE
did not kill by making use of the word of God), we turn to Rom 13:1-4. We realise that speaking of
earthly rulers Paul notes that ―he beareth not the sword in vain‖. Therefore the sword being re- Editorial ................................... ……1

Tricks of the Devil…..……………..…..5
The next question is; According to revelation 13, what nation is to give the ―sword‖ back to the

deadly wound could not have been healed by the Vatican being given nation status.
Secondly, in order to buttress their argument Adventists so inclined often quote the following
which appeared in a newspaper: "The Roman question tonight was a thing of the past, and the
Vatican was at peace with Italy... In affixing the autographs to the memorable document healing
the wound of many years, extreme cordiality was displayed on both sides" -The San Francisco
Chronicle. Feb. 11, 1929
Once again careful study of history will lead us to the knowledge that before 1870 italy was made
up of a number of different states. In that year, Victor Emmanuel combined all the states into a
single country and in protest at their Papal states being taken away successive Popes shut them-
selves up in the Vatican and did not leave its environs for 59 years. This is the wound that was al-
luded to as being healed in the oft quoted article and it had nothing to do with the Scriptural heal-
ing of the beast‘s deadly wound.
My belief is that not until Rome again has the power to make her will and doctrines effective
through cooperating legislative enactments and judicial decrees, backed by the might and muscle
of the United States of America, will the wound be healed, resulting in the same power and might
she had before being wounded... But let us not be lulled into a false state of security as such a day is
coming on apace.
