PREFACE
This Mechanics Of Deformable Bodies is a course requirement compilation where the
principles and basic concepts of the Strength of Materials are shown and explained with
sufficient practical examples and discussions. The compilation comprises the basic topics like
stress, strain, torsion, shear and moment, stress, and deflection in beams. The drawings are a bit
indistinguishable and some solutions are not well completely expressed. This compilation has its
table of contents for the ease of searching. Handwriting in the first part is not the same as the
following parts for having two writers in the sheets. Some assignments, seat works and
assignments are not attached in appendices. For the overview, Mechanics of deformable
bodies deals with how forces are distributed inside bodies, and with the deformations caused by
these internal force distributions. These internal forces produce "stresses" in the body, which
could ultimately result in the failure of the material itself. Principles of rigid body mechanics
often provide the beginning steps in analyzing these internal stresses, and resulting
deformations. Of particular importance are the properties of the materials used, the strength of
which will determine whether the components fail by breaking in service, and the stiffness of
which will determine whether the amount of deformation they suffer is acceptable. Therefore, the
subject of mechanics of materials or strength of materials is central to the whole activity of
engineering design. Usually the objectives in analysis here will be the determination of the
stresses, strains, and deflections produced by loads. Theoretical analyses and experimental
results have an equal role in this field.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation first for the patience and knowledge
that our professor, Engr. Cris S. Lictaoa, provided us. I would also like to thank Welbert Rana for
printing margins to some of the sheets of this compilation. For Edmar O. Hermosilla, my cousin,
I would like to thank him for his hard work in transferring the majority of the lecture notes in
these sheets. I would also like to thank Mary Joy Villas, Beatrice Peralta, Jess Tyron Nodado,
Charisse Diane Elam, and Aimae Salvador for sending the lacks of my lecture notes and format
of the compilation. Lastly I am full-heartedly thankful for my T-32 block mates for the
motivation, prayers and support for the whole group of TAMUNGGI.
