Lesson: Beyond Reality
Aims:
To give students practice in understanding information from a text
To give students practice in extracting information from listening to a text
To present and activate new vocabulary
To practice the new vocabulary
Objectives: By the end of the lesson the students will be able:
1. to prove in-detail comprehension of the texts (written or oral)
2. to use vocabulary related to topic: gadgets, apps
3. to give information
Skills involved: basic skills: speaking, reading, listening
Interaction: - teacher-student; student-teacher

Materials: - handouts, podcast, video projector, short film

MOMENTS OF THE LESSON:


Activity 1 Class Management
Aim: to make sure everything is prepared for the lesson
Interaction: T
Time: 1 min
Procedure: T notes down whos absent, makes sure everybody has the needed material
Activity 2 Warm up (Brainstorming)
Aim: to introduce Ss into the topic of discussion
Interaction: T-SS, SS-SS, SS-T
Time: 5
Procedure: Teacher asks students: - to give examples of technology we use today.
- to explain how modern technology influences our lives
- to mention how their lives would be without these inventions.

Activity 3 Pre-listening 1
Aim: to check students knowledge about the topic
Interaction: pair work
Time: 5
Procedure: T writes gadgets and apps (an abbreviation of application) on the board and
asks what they mean. T asks for examples (a mobile phone, a digital camera, an iPad,
an iPod and a flatscreen TV; a piece of software which runs on the internet, a computer,
mobile phone or other electronic devices).
T asks SS to answer in pairs:
Which gadgets have you got or would like to have?
If you could invent a new gadget what would it do?
Do you use any apps? Have you have it/them for long?
Activity 4: Pre-listening 2
Aim: to make SS familiar with the text they will listen to
Interaction: PW
Time: 3
Procedure: Teacher asks students to look at worksheets and to guess which word fits
each gap.
Activity 5: Listening
Aim: to give SS practice in listening to authentic English language
Interaction: individually
Time: 3
Procedure: T asks SS to listen to the tape and check their answers
Activity 6: After-listening
Aim: to check SS understanding of the listened text
Interaction: T-SS, SS-SS
Time: 3
Procedure: T asks SS to match the words with their definitions
Activity 7: Pre-viewing 1
Aim: to make SS familiar with the film they are going to watch
Interaction: Group work
Time: 3
Procedure: T tells SS that they are going to watch a short film about a gadget or an app
called Sight. T asks them to discuss and try to predict the following questions:
What do you think an app called Sight might do?
What do you think you will see in the film?
T gets feedback from the groups.
Activity 8: Pre-viewing 2
Aim: to reinforce abilities to express possibility and certainty
Interaction: PW
Time: 4
Procedure: T asks SS to look at each slide and say what the person may/might be
doing when smth. is likely to happen or what he/she must be doing when we are sure
about smth.

Activity 9: Viewing
Aim: to extract information
Interaction: individually
Time: 10
Procedure: T tells them to watch the film and notice what Sight does.
T asks them to think about what the advantages and disadvantages of Sight might be.

Activity 10: After-viewing 1
Aim: to evaluate SS comprehension
Interaction: T-SS, SS-T
Time: 3
Procedure: T asks SS if they liked the film and SS present their own impressions.
T asks what Sight is (a type of app or a device which augments reality an app that
enhances ones current perception of reality. Information about the environment and its
objects is overlaid on the real world.
T asks:
Would you like to have Sight?
What would you use Sight for?
How could Sight be misused?
Do you think that an app or a device like Sight is possible in the future?
Activity 11: Feedback, evaluation
Aim: to check SSs understanding of the lesson and to see what SS liked
Interaction: individually, T-SS
Time: 5
Procedure: T gives SS a paper with a fragment from the film and asks if they agree with
advertising such a product.
T asks SS what the lesson was about, what new words they kept into their minds and
what aspect of the film they are sure to remember.
Homework:
Tell SS to search on the Internet a short video which shows what Project Glass is.
As they watch they should notice how Project Glass is similar to Sight and write
about differences and similarities between the two films.
