    THINNER for Invert Oil- Based Muds

    Doverlube DFA-219 Invert Oil Based Mud Thinner


    Oil Based Muds (OBM) and Synthetic Oil Based Muds are being used extensively for LandBased and Off-Shore drilling. Over a period of service, OBM will accumulate high level of
    colloidal cuttings which are generated during a drilling process, which disperse well through a
    mud resulting in thickening, high viscosities, and high gel points to the point that and the used
    mud has to be disposed. At present, thickened drilling fluids are treated with flocculating
    polymers, succeeded by cumbersome centrifuging.
    At 1-2% level, Doverlube DFA-219 will act upon emulsion and colloidal interaction to thin out
    both viscosities and gelling to prolong the service life of the contaminated in-field invert OBM.
    Evaluation Method
    Two fresh invert OBMs, one diesel-based and one synthetic-based, are blended with 12% (by the
    weight of the mud) of Rev-Dust and Bentonite each for a total of 24% colloidal solids, are
    subjected to rolling-oven aging at 150F for 16 hours. Rheology is subsequently run using a Fann
    viscometer at 120F. Rev-Dust represents inactive cuttings and Bentonite due to its action on
    water-based emulsion represents reactive colloidal solids.

    Doverlube DFA-219 in these case studies can restore the consistency, viscosities, and gel strength
    of contaminated invert muds to the original levels even with high colloidal solids contents. It is
    recommended that the optimal level of use of DFA-219 is determined before an actual adjustment
    being made at rig site. The level of 1% should always be the first.
