In the Redwood Plaza

Minor differences will invariably exist among wines made from the
same grape variety because of differences in terroir and individual
winemaking styles, but over time and many trials youll learn what to
expect from a Merlot versus a Pinot Noir, for example. And youll
appreciate a Pinot Noir that tastes like Pinot Noir, not Merlot.
As you get comfortable identifying true varietal character, start
thinking about wine characteristics that might be a result of either
winemaker intervention or the unique conditions of the wine
appellation. Unless you talk with the winemaker or read the
producers wine notes, it is impossible to know for sure how one
quality came to stand out more than another, but you still need to ask
the questions that address the contrasts below:
Balanced or unbalanced componentsDo alcohol, tannin, acidity
and fruit seem to create equal impactor does one seem to stand out
more than others?
Lingering finish or short finishDoes the wines impression disappear
quickly after tastingor does it remain on the palate long after?
Powerful or mildDoes the wine bombard your senses of smell, taste
and touch all at onceor does it seem like a more restrained and quiet
stimulation?
Lively or blandDoes it seem bright and active on your palateor
plain, almost watery or thin?
Complex or one-dimensionalDo you sense more than one flavor
and aromaor does the wine progressively bring more to the palate as
you sip and savor?
Elegant or plainDoes it combine softness of texture with a blend of
interesting flavors and enticing aromasor is it uninspiring, causing you
to lose interest after the first or second taste?
Smooth or coarseDoes the texture feel round, almost melting in your
mouthor does it seem chewy or dry?
Think of some other contrasts of your own. The descriptors you
create will summarize how the producer and geographic peculiarities
influence the wine. When you start recognizing these distinctions and
forming your own critique, you raise your level of wine appreciation.
You no longer drink wineyou taste wine. The next time you taste a
Cabernet Sauvignon, for example, think back to your impressions of
previous Cabernet Sauvignons. Ask yourself if your general
impression is better, worse, or the same as the other Cabernets. Start
forming your own preferences, or dislikes, for the varietals,
producers, regions and wine styles that you experience.

The iconic Grgich Hills Estate in Napa Valley, CA, has consistently
produced world-class wines since 1977. Led by the Miljenko Mike
Grgich, who has long been a proponent of natural winegrowing and
sustainability, the winery grows its grapes without artificial fertilizers,
pesticides or herbicides, relying on wild yeast fermentation and the
celebrated winemakers passion to handcraft food-friendly, balanced,
and elegant wines. While many other Napa wineries pursue strategies
of expansion, Mikealong with his daughter, Violet Grgich, and his
nephew, Ivo Jeramazprefer to stay small. They aim, year after year,
to improve the quality of their vineyards and their wines, relying on
Mikes distinctive artistic and intuitive touch. Grgich Hills Estate is
located at 1829 St. Helena Hwy, Rutherford, CA. The winery is open
for tastings daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, and closed on major

SEQUOIA GROVE
A Taste to Remember
In The Beginning
Located in the heart of wine country, less than 50 yards off the Saint
Helena Highway, is Sequoia Grove Winery. The 150 year old rustic,
remodeled barn, once housing the entire winery operation, is now a modern,
comfortable tasting room where you can sample an array of wines including
highly rated vineyard designated Cabernets, while sitting in a tranquil
atmosphere surrounded by majestic 100 year old Sequoia Redwoods. The
history, and longevity of Sequoia Grove parallels the growth of the Napa
Valley wine industry. Since 1982, the current president and director of
winemaking, Michal Trujillo, has been with the winery, serving as winemaker
until 2003 when Molly Hill joined the staff as assistant winemaker, being
appointed head winemaker in 2008.
A visit to Sequoia Grove takes you on an escape where you can sip and
savor a variety of small lot production wines. The friendly, knowledgeable
staff enjoys talking about the history of the winery and the valley itself. Two
different tastings are offered in the tasting room: The Current Release Tasting
offers four current wines to taste. You may want to try the fun and fragrant
Rollicking Ros, a summertime favorite, the Napa Valley Chardonnay, the
Rebellious Red and the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Of course, your
tasting room host can suggest what may go best with your individual pallet. If
you are a Cabernet lover, the Reserve Tasting is not to be missed. This is a
three wine Cabernet tasting featuring Sequoias Rutherford Reserve, and two

A Commitment to Quality
Wines from Sequoia Grove have a commitment to
consistency: All fruit is 100% from the Napa Valley, either
from the original estate vineyard, sourced from premier
Napa Valley growers, or from designated vineyards such as
Tonella, Stagecoach or Henry Brothers, each showcasing
the unique attributes of the different terroir. Although
Sequoias wines are age worthy, you may also be assured
that when you open a bottle of Sequoia Grove, it is ready
to enjoy and share with others.

Bob Pepi, our winemaker, knew exactly what our mission was and has
created the wines that sell and distributed in North America, Europe
and Asia. We are proud of our distribution network and pleased with
the positive comments from thousands of tasting room visitors who
enjoy our wines. This all started at our 52-acre beautiful Old World
Charm Tuscan Villa in the heart of Napa. Surrounded by 42 acres of
planted vineyards, our winery serves visitors from around the world on
a daily basis. From private tastings, dinners, tours, club parties and
corporate events, the Tuscan atmosphere is the perfect venue. Twenty
years ago we never dreamed we would be one of the most recognized
vineyards in Napa. We are proud of this distinction and from our

Napa Valley Vintners Announces 2016 Restaurant Wine List Award Winners
Program recognizes local dining establishments
with outstanding selections of Napa Valley wine
The Napa Valley Vintners (NVV) nonprofit trade association
announced the recipients of its 2016 Napa Valley Wine List Awards.
More than 85 restaurants, from the pioneering All Seasons restaurant
in Calistoga to newcomer Basalt in Napa, were recognized for their
emphasis on serving local wines.
The NVV started its Wine List Awards program during the
economic recession as a way to help bolster business and to
emphasize the importance of eating and drinking locally sourced
products. To be recognized, each wine list must feature 50 percent or
50 selections of Napa Valley wine.
When Chef Morimoto opened the Napa restaurant, he wanted an
all-California wine list with a focus on Napa. It was easy to build this
list as the wines of Napa Valley are so diverse, said Eduardo Dingler,
beverage director of Morimoto Restaurants. Chef Morimotos
philosophy is when you go to Bordeaux you dont drink Chilean
wine; when people travel to Napa, they want to drink Napa Valley
wine.
Jim Foster, of Carpe Diem restaurant in Napa noted, We support
the local Napa Valley wine industry because they support us. Why
wouldnt we want to serve some of the finest wines in the world?

Prager Winery
& Port Works
El Manhattan Recipe
Courtesy Harvest Inn by Charlie Palmer
This spin on the classic Manhattan features the 2011 Prager
Port. Lead Bartender Joel Pfeifle says they chose this port for
its blend of ruby and tawny traits. It gave the drink some nice
fruit and wood notes, but wasn't overly sweet. It has a few
more ingredients than the traditional cocktail, but those who
have tasted the drink, say one sip, and youll be hooked!
.75 oz of Prager Port Napa Valley
.75 oz of Rainwater Madeira
.5 oz of Oloroso Sherry
1 oz of Carpano Antica Vermouth
2 dashes of Fee Bros Whiskey Barrel Aged bitters
1 dash of Fee Bros Peach bitters
Half dash of Fee Bros Aztec Chocolate
Combine in a mixing glass and stir for 10 to 15 seconds.
Serve over ice with a cherry garnish.
PortWhats in a Name?
For those plugged into the wine industry happenings,
you may have heard rumblings recently centered around
wineries here in the states using the name port on fortified
wines produced in regions other than the Porto region in
Portugalthe Douro River Valley to be exact. Produced
from very specific varieties native to Portugal, the wine
from that region is shipped from the town of Oporto across
the globehence the wines name of port. Similar to the
ruling here in the U.S. which mandates that bubblies made
outside of Champagne, France cannot be legally called
Champagne and must be labeled as sparkling wines, the
port-debate here in this country is a long and very
complicated one. The good news for Prager Port Works is
this new regulation set forth by the TTB (U.S. Alcohol and
Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, which governs all things
related to wine such as labeling) has grandfathered-in all
wineries in operation prior to 2006. This leaves the winery
free to continue labeling their wines as port for now. At
some point, however, a new industry name for this
heavenly elixir will probably become adopted. In the
meantime, the winery suggests you not worry about what
the wine is named, but rather, how a quality port is made.
The Prager family promises to help you find just the right
one to suit your taste.
Appointments are required to visit this unique and
historic winery. Come as you are, and be ready to enter the
world of port wines. You may want to bring some extra
$1.00 bills with you to hang on the wall thats a story Ill
leave up to the Pragers to share with you.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Honors the 40th Anniversary of the Judgment of Paris
In honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Judgment of Paris this
May, Stags Leap Wine Cellars will release the 2013 vintage of its
iconic S.L.V. Estate Cabernet Sauvignon with a commemorative label
replicating the original 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon which took
top honors among the red wines at the 1976 Paris Tasting.
Triumphing over two first-growth and other renowned wines of
Bordeaux, the 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon brought international
recognition to Stags Leap Wine Cellars, Napa Valley and the
American wine industry as a whole. To mark the historic event, the
commemorative 2013 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon carries a small gold
band saying 40th Anniversary Vintage and releases at the winery
May 1, 2016.
The surprise win in 1976 by Stags Leap Wine Cellars and
Chateau Montelena Winery with their Chardonnay truly changed
the course of history, said Ted Baseler, President and CEO of Ste.
Michelle Wine Estates and Stags Leap Wine Cellars. What the
Judgment of Paris did was give credibility. It was a trigger event that
gave validity to the quality of American wines. It set a high
benchmark and legacy for the winery, and one that we work every
day to respect and take to new heights.
Winemaker Marcus Notaro agrees that wine quality is the primary
focus today. Since the purchase of the winery in 2007, weve made
significant investments in technology and vineyard replanting, and
quality is at an all-time high, he said. The fact that the 2013 vintage
was one of the best in Napa Valley makes the release of the 40th
Anniversary vintage even more special.
Stags Leap Wine Cellars has planned a very busy year of tastings
and events at the winery and in key cities across the U.S. and around
the globe to give our customers and wine lovers a chance to celebrate
the milestone 40th Anniversary.
More information about the consumer events at the winery can be

August Briggs Winery Single Vineyard Heaven
If you are a lover of single vineyard wines, August Briggs Winery
in downtown Calistoga is the place for you. Making an exclusive
collection of single vineyard, single varietal wines (except for one
blend) from highly regarded vineyard sites in both Sonoma and Napa
counties, August Briggs Winery has been crafting small production
bottlings for more than 20 years.
We started out of a garage, Matthew Gasco states. The winery
was founded in 1995 by namesake August Joe Briggs, who at the
time was a winemaker consulting at various wineries in Northern
California wine country. Having developed longstanding relationships
with many grape-growers, wineries and vineyard-owners, Briggs
began buying fruit to make his own wines. Today, Matthew Gasco
and Colette Milliman run the winery; Briggs nephew, Jesse Inman, is

Landmark Vineyards
Come for the Wines Stay for the Ambience
Landmark Vineyards in Sonoma County is one of those rare
wineries where that most personal wow factor hits you upon arrival.
Their well-earned reputation precedes them as a Chardonnay and
Pinot House. Upon arrival you will be transported into a relaxing
atmosphere, where you will want to stay to unwind and enjoy all that
the winery has to offer. Sip and taste their highly rated wines in the
spacious, inviting tasting room, sit out on the patio by the soothing
fountain, by the lake watching water foul play, or try your hand at
bocce ball. Whatever you choose, you will be enticed to immerse
yourself in the atmosphere of Landmark Vineyards, which IS a
Sonoma landmark.
A History of Excellence
Landmark Vineyards goes back to the infancy of the Sonoma wine
country. Founded in 1974 by a group that included Damaris Deere
Ford, great-great granddaughter of John Deere, by 1989 Damaris
became sole proprietor and Landmark was moved to its present
location. Success and recognition followed quickly. With a
commitment to excellence. The flagship Chardonnay, Overlook, was
released in 1991 and in 1993, California winemaker icon, Helen
Turley, joined Landmark. Turleys presence would help cement a
serious reputation for Landmark wines going forward. The first Pinot,
Grand Detour was then released, and in 1997 the 1995 Landmark
Chardonnay was named on the Wine Spectators Top 100 Wines of the
World list, its first of six listings. Landmark had arrived and securely
established their reputation as a premier Chardonnay and Pinot house
in California.

A visit to Chateau Adore would not be complete without a taste of its
Red Onion wine, the only of its kind, according to Wong, made commercially
in the United States.
Often homemade in Korean and Japanese culture, the red onion wine is
said to have healing properties, including relief from migraines, more restful
sleep, relief from joint pain and lowering high blood pressure and cholesterol.
Wong says if visitors bring a bottle of this wine back to their mothers, she
will certainly appreciate the gift.
Daily Tasting
As part of its anniversary celebration, Chateau Adore is open for tastings
Thursday through Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. Tastings on Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday are available by appointment. Visitors can come into
the tasting room to learn about the wines and taste, then take a bottle out to
the arbor-covered patio to enjoy the Sonoma County sunshine and
surrounding vineyards.
Wong said vineyard tours area available to visitors upon request.
Meadowcroft Wines
Capturing the Spirit of Welcome
Theres quite a bit of excitement going on over in Sonoma. As a
producer of small-lot, handcrafted single-vineyard wines,
Meadowcroft Wines is just one of the boutique wine rooms, shops, art
galleries and gardens thats welcoming a new neighbor to their
community located at CornerStone Sonoma. The reason for all the
buzz: the distinguished and much adored Sunset Magazine has
relocated its Gardens and Outdoor Test Kitchen from Menlo Park to
this artsy enclave off Arnold Drive in Sonoma Valley. In true Sunsetstyle, the magazine is commemorating the move with a top-notch
soire [Sunset Celebration Weekend, May 14 and 15], complete with
an impressive array of artisanal foods, wines, celebrity cooking
segments, gardening and DIY demonstrations, along with tours of
their new outdoor space and test gardens.
Tom Meadowcroft, proprietor and winemaker at Meadowcroft
Wines, couldnt be happier about their arrival. For three generations
my family has subscribed to Sunset Magazine. Their elegant, yet
simple and approachable style to food, wine, travel and gardening is in
perfect synchronicity with Meadowcrofts no-fuss spirit of welcome,
says Tom. They set the standard when it comes to lifestyle
entertaining and creating a home...living a life with a certain joie de
vivre if you will. This philosophy fully aligns with our mission to
capture the essence of Sonoma through the terroir of our vineyards
and our gracious hospitality.
profiles, and finally adds them to the wines as they age in barrel. Just
as you toast your spices when cooking to release their essential oils,
Tom applies the same principal to the grape seeds. A lighter toast
yields warm scents of cardamom and clove, whereas a darker toast on
the seeds offers hints of bittersweet cocoa and coffee bean. By ageing
the wine with the seeds, complementary spice notes layer into the
already exceptional varietal expressions, lessen the apparent tannins
on the palate and deepen the wines overall complexity.

19th Annual Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival Adds Wineries, Winemaker Event
Now in its 19th year, the Anderson
Valley Pinot Noir Festival has expanded to
include more wineries and events than ever.
This years festival, to be held May 19-22,
will showcase more than 60 Anderson Valley
Pinot Noir producers, and will include an
extra day of winemaker-only events.
The festival will commence on Thursday,
May 19 with a brand-new Winemakers
Workshop. Open only to winemakers
producing Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, this
day-long workshop aims to bring
winemakers together to taste both current
releases and 2015 barrel samples.
Winemakers will offer critical feedback and
discussion in hopes of improving the quality
of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir into the future
an already high bar.
Regular festival events like Fridays
technical conference (open to the public,
trade and press), the Friday night Casual
BBQ, Saturdays grand tasting and winemaker
dinners, and Sundays winery open houses
will continue.
Running concurrently with a co-located
press tasting, Fridays technical conference
will include topics like: an Anderson Valley
sparkling wines tasting; a Navarro River
Watershed update (now in its fourth year); a
vineyard-focused Pinot Noir tasting; Lessons
of the 2015 Vintage, based upon the
discussions held at the prior days
Winemakers Workshop; a session on
closures, and more. Breakfast and a full
lunch will be provided.
The technical conference will be followed
by a casual, outdoor barbecue at Pennyroyal
Farm, featuring plenty of grilled delicacies, a
live band and Pinot Noir from a variety of
producers.
The grand tasting will again take place in
the vineyards at Goldeneye Winery in Philo.
Pinots will be paired with smoked salmon,
pork belly, wood-fired pizzas, duck sliders,
local chocolates and other delicious bites.
There will also be live music and a silent
auction to benefit the valleys rural health

Testarossa Wine & Food III Benefits the 100 Women Foundation
June 5 th event benefits growing Philanthropic women's group
who help the underserved of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties
Testarossa Winery, producers of premier California Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay for more than 20 years, is continuing to grow its
popular gourmet charity wine and food event, Testarossa Wine &
Food III, this year benefitting the 100 Women Foundation.
Testarossa Wine & Food is turning out to be the event of the
year and we couldnt think of a better charity partner than the 100
Women Foundation, said Rob Jensen, owner and co-Founder of
Testarossa Winery. 100 Women is a growing community of more
than 500 women who are committed to philanthropic works
focusing on improving the lives of the disadvantaged of Santa
Clara and San Mateo counties.
Jensen goes on to say My wife Diana and I are thrilled to
showcase so many great regional chefs and restaurants from
Carmel through the San Francisco Peninsula. We hope everyone
attending the event visits and supports these great restaurants for
not only a fantastic dining experience but also as a way of thanking
them for donating their time and talents benefitting such a
wonderful charity!
More than twenty-two restaurants will be serving food at the
culinary event designed to accompany the many Testarossa
Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs being served. There are also four
special seminars being offered. Seminars start at 10:30 a.m. before
the Grand Tasting that runs from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Pasta Seminar Michelin Star Chef Peter Armellino of the
Plumed Horse in Saratoga will take attendees on a magical
adventure into the world of pasta and gnocchi with such
delicacies as summer truffles or Calabrian chilis.
Pinot Noir Clones Seminar Andy Mitchell, Hahn Family
Wines Director of Viticulture, and Master Sommelier Randall
Bertao of Los Altos Golf & County Club, will join Testarossa
Director of Winemaking Bill Brosseau for an in depth pinot noir
clonal exploration seminar experiencing the differences between
Dijon and Heritage Pinot Noir Clones from the Doctor's
Vineyard in Monterey's prestigious Santa Lucia Highlands
Appellation.
Wine & Cheese Pairing Seminar Point Reyes Farmstead
Founder and Cheese Monger Jill Giacomini Basch and Testarossa
Wine Educator Bob Zamora team up for the Art of Wine and
Cheese Pairing. SOLD OUT
Fine Wine Glass Seminar Riedel, the world leader in fine wine
stemware, hosts a seminar to show that the right glass does
matter when enjoying wine from the aroma, taste and complete
experience. The price of the seminar includes four Riedel glasses
that are yours to keep.
New this year is the Philippe Azoulay Memorial Chefs Award to
be given to the chef/festaurant voted on by the guests for the best
overall food experience.
Tickets to the Testarossa Wine and Food III and the remaining
seminars are on sale now and can all be purchased on
