Major Difference Between The API 5L

PSL 1 pipes are not required to undergo impact testing and have only minimum yield and tensile stress values, making them suitable for category D fluids like water. PSL 2 pipes require impact testing at 0°C and have a range of yield and tensile stresses, making them more expensive but necessary for category M fluids like hydrocarbons that require NACE compliance. PSL stands for Product Specification Level in API 5L steel pipes, with PSL 2 having more stringent testing requirements than PSL 1.

Major difference between the API 5L- PSL 1 & PSL 2 Pipes.

Note:1) Major difference is, In case of PSL1, Impact test is not mandatory and in case of PSL2,
Impact test is mandatory at minimum 0 deg C.
2) Further, in case of PSL2 there is a range of Yield Stress and Tensile Stress. In case of PSL1
there is a minimum value of Yield Stress and Tensile Stress
3) API 5L PSL -1 is normally used for category D or normal service fluids. i.e. cooling
water, utility water, air etc services and not required many of the testing requirements, whereas
PSL-2 pipe is used for category M fluids i.e. Hydrocarbons, Sour etc., requiring NACE
compliance, hence more costly.
What does PSL mean in pipe?
Nominal Pipe Size 2" to 24" O.D. Wall Thickness - Schedule 10 through 160, STD, XS, XXS.
Standard API 5L. Product Specification Level PSL-2. Steel grade X52.
