    NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY: RADIATE TO INNOVATE

    The basic of radiation discussed last Tuesday March 8, 2016 was interesting
    although our class came in late but still we managed to hear the talk and I
    took down some notes. According to some people radiation has existed
    throughout the entire existence of the earth I have read in an article that
    scientists did not know about radiation until very recently because
    radioactive material looks the same as non-radioactive materials. Scientists
    have only known about radiation since 1890s. Of course like any other
    bacteria, radiation has also a beneficial and detrimental effects on people,
    animals, nature or lets just say to earth because there are many uses of
    radiation that helps ensure the high quality and safety of our daily lives like
    x-ray machines in airports to detect weapons or other devices in luggages
    and certain types of imaging to look for diseases. These are all application of
    radiation for the benefit of the society these are examples of security devices
    and medical uses of radiation some are household products like oven toaster,
    food irradiation, it is used to destroy food-borne bacteria and parasites in
    foods. If theres a beneficial effect there will always be a detrimental effects.
    The speaker also tackled the radiation in fukushima it is the worst nuclear
    incident in 25 years displaced 50,000 households after radioactive material
    leaked into the air, soil, and sea. The radiation checks led to bans on some
    shipments of vegetables and fish. People in the area worst affected have a
    slightly higher risk of developing certain cancers. If only I am knowledgeable
    enough to understand what chemistry is trying to tell us I will definitely
    pursue my second dream to become a chemist.
    In radiation chemistry of water it said that both the harmful effects of
    radiation upon biological systems and the useful effects of radiotherapy
    involve the radiation chemistry of water. In application of radiation in
    chemistry, first is the modification of materials, protection of materials and
    sterilization of healthcare products. As a biology student it is a great
    opportunity for us to be a part of the annual seminar organized by the 4 th
    year BS Chemistry students. Some of my classmates participated in the
    forum after the talk. Some are interested to apply an internship in their
    company. Aside from additional knowledge that the annual seminar gave us
    they also gave us something to eat and a certificate of participation.
