Paper Industryk
India first Machine-made paper was manufactured in 1812. During this time there were 15
mills with a total production of lakh tones. In India the Soft wood is the principal raw
material used for making paper especially newsprint and high class printing papers. With rise
in population and broadening of education the demand for paper has been constantly
escalated. Owing to very narrow forest resources wood pulp is in a shortage. As soft woods
grow in temperate climate India is in short supply of such woods. Thus, in such
circumstances the Bamboo became the major raw materials for the manufacture of paper in
the country as it grows very quickly even after cutting.
Paper industry in India is mainly plantation based and is essential that more land must be
brought under plantations of eucalyptus and other trees apposite for the making of papers.
The paper industry also requires huge amount of soft water and paper utilized for newspapers
is called newsprint. Its requirement is bound to grow noticeably. The Nepanagar Newsprint
plant in Madtiya was set up to meet these aforementioned demands. The capacity of Indian
Paper Industry has been raised to 75,000 tonnes a year. West Bengal and Maharashtra are the
leading states for the industry. The total newsprint production has now reached well over
400,000 tonnes. A large number of expansion programmes & expansion of capacities with an
outlay of Rs. 10,000 crores have been announced covering the various sectors like paper,
paperboard, newsprint, etc.
Indian paper industry is a vast industry comprising more than 157 paper-producing divisions
all over India. These 157 functional units manufacture handmade paper worth around Rs.21
cores and provide employment to approximately 10,000 people. Sanganer village is the
biggest center in western India humming on the rhythm of the sound of paper making
activities.
Brief Introduction
Indian Paper industry has created sustainable livelihood in rural areas and has helped
generating employment for the local population especially for women to earn their
livelihood.
The Indian Paper Industry has emerged as a diversified and specialized industry that produces
numerous types of papers that comes in various use such as watermark, filter paper, drawing
sheets, etc.
Other products including Paper Bags, paper diaries, paper photo Frames, Greeting Cards,
Handmade paper Boxes, paper Albums, etc, are manufactured and exported across the world.
Today, the Indian exporters export nearly Rs.400 crores worth of paper products per annum to
the developed nations.
Market capitalization
The Indian Paper Industry has the top 15 global players with an output of more than 6
millions tonnes annually with an estimated turnover of Rs. 150,000 millions. Indian Paper
Industry is riding on a strong demand and on an expanding mood to meet the projected
demand of 8 million tonnes by 2010 & 13 million tonnes by 2020.
Demand of Paper has been around 8% and during the years 2002-07 while newsprint
registered a growth of 13% and Writing & Printing, Containerboard, Cartonboard and others
registered growth of 5%, 11%, 9% and 1% respectively. So far, the growth in paper industry
has mirrored the growth in GDP and has grown on an average 6-7 % over the last few years.
India is the fastest growing market for paper globally and it presents an exciting scenario and
paper consumption is poised for a big leap forward in sync with the economic growth and is
estimated to touch 13.95 million tons by 2015-16. The futuristic view is that growth in paper
consumption would be in multiples of GDP and hence an increase in consumption by one kg
per capita would lead to an increase in demand of 1 million tons.
As per industry estimates, paper production is likely to grow at a CAGR of 8.4% while paper
consumption will grow at a CAGR of 9% till 2012-13. The import of pulp & paper products
is likely to show a growing trend. During last few years, the Indian paper market witnessed a
five-fold jump in the import of coated paper. The total import of this paper rose to 10,000
tonnes in 2008 from 2,000 tones.
Employment Opportunities
The industry provides employment to more than 0.12 million people directly and 0.34 million
people indirectly. Some of the paper products are sheet paper, paper boxes, tissues, paper
bags, stationery, envelopes, and printed-paper products such as books, periodicals, and
newspapers. Specialty papers like sandpaper, blueprint paper, carbon paper are not a part of
paper products industry. Stationery includes greeting cards, printing and writing papers,
school and office papers, etc. The toiletry products include paper towels, tissue paper, and
bath tissue.
HISTORY OF PAPER
Paper has a long history, beginning with the ancient Egyptian and continuing to the present
day. For thousand of year, hand-made methods dominated and then, during the 19th century,
paper production became industrialized.
Of all the writing and drawing materials that people have employed down the ages, paper is
the most widely used around the world. Its name derived from papyrus the material used by
the ancient Egyptian, Greeks and Romans. Papyrus, however, is only one of the predecessors
of paper that together are known by the generic term tapa and are mostly made from the
inner bark of paper mulberry, fig and Daphne. Recent archaeological excavations in china
have revealed some of the oldest tapa paper ever found which shows that paper was being
produced in china before western records began. AD 105 In AD 105, the Chinese court
official, Tsai Lun, (if we are to believe the chronicle recording the claim) invented
papermaking from textile waste using rags. This can be considered as the birth of paper. AD
610 Chinese papermaking techniques reached Korea at an early date and were introduced to
Japan in the year 610. In these two countries, paper is still made by hand on a large scale in
the old tradition, preferably from the fresh bast fibres of the mulberry tree (kozo in Japanese).
Very soon, knowledge of papermaking spread to Central Asia and Tibet and then on to India.
When the Arabs, in the course of their eastern expansion, neared Samarkand they too became
acquainted with the production of paper and paper mills were subsequently set up in
Baghdad, Damascus and Cairo, and later in morocco, Spain and Sicily. 14th Century In the
course of the rapid expansion of trade in the late middle ages, more and more merchants dealt
in the commodity called paper that was growing in importance for public and intellectual
life. The Nuremberg councilor Ulmann Stromer (Stromeir) mulled over the advantages of
making his own paper and, with the help of skilled workers from Italy, transformed the
Gleismuhle by the gates of his home town into a paper mill. The dates noted in his diary, 24
June 1390 (start of work on the waterwheel) and 7 and 11 august 1390 (oaths sworn by his
Nuremberg foremen), are the first assured records of papermaking on German soil.
16th Century The advantages of this mill-based papermaking technique, which spread
throughout Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries: far outweighed the disadvantages of
considerable outlays of time and capital for building and fitting out with new machinery and
equipment.
17th Century Technical progress continued in the 17th century. Smoothing the sheet by
hand, using a creasing knife or blood stone was supplemented by the use of a smoothing
hammer (similar to a forging hammer). Towards the end of the 17th century, a new and much
more efficient beater, called a Hollander, was invented. This supplemented, or even
replaced the stamping mill and further divided papermakers into two new camps.
18th Century During the 18th century there had been some concentration of craft activities
in large operations, the manufactories, which were dependent on skilled papermakers
organized into craft groups. The initial model was the vat that was used by J.N.L. Robert,
who built the first flat-screen papermaking machine in 1798. This was further developed in
England, mostly by Donking and the Fourdrinier brothers.
19th and 20th Century The history of the paper industry in the 19th and 20th centuries can
be broken down into following five partly overlapping periods, each marked by definite
trends:
In the first stage (from about 1800 to 1860), all work sequences previously performed by
hand were mechanized.
During the second stage (about 1840 to 1880), efforts were made to obtain rag substitutes on
an industrial scale (ground wood pulp and chemical pulp) and appropriate industrial plants
(ground wood and chemical pulp mills) were developed.
The third stage (1860 to 1950) was marked by the enlargement of the web width, an increase
in working speeds, the introduction of electric drive and further improvements to various
machine parts.
The fourth stage (1950 to 1980), which was still dependent on the old methods as far as the
mechanics were concerned, brought unprecedented changes in papermaking.
The fifth stage leads into the future. The evolution of new sheet-forming principles (with
fluid boundaries between paper and non-woven fabrics) and chemical pulp processes have
been the main process improvements
. During the 20th Century machines were designed specifically for the production of
particular paper and boards. New materials and chemicals were introduced into the process
and automation occurred. New sheet forming principles and chemical pulp processes also
evolved .
21st Century & Beyond Paper is an amazing product: it is renewable, clean and incredibly
versatile. It continuously offers new possibilities, applications and end-uses. Paper can be
impregnated, enameled, creped, waterproofed, waxed, glazed, sensitized, bent, folded,
twisted, crumpled, cut, torn, dissolved, molded and embossed. Who knows to what uses it
will be put in the future? (http://www.paperonline.org/).
Latest developments
The US government's recent move to clamp anti-dumping duty against the paper
imports from China and Indonesia has affected the Indian paper manufacturers. The
Indian Paper Manufacturers Association (IPMA) has urged the Centre to raise tariff
walls or at least retain the 10% current level of import duties.
Indian paper and newsprint industry has a huge potentials and prospects in coming
future. In our, country, demand for paper and newspaper is rapidly increasing. There
are vast demands in the area of tea bags, filer paper, tissue paper, medical-grade
coated paper, lightweight online coated paper, etc.
Indian paper industry is one of the underestimated industries for quite some time
because India's per capita consumption of paper is just about 5 kg. Whereas it is 337
kg in North America, 110 kg in Europe and 30 kg in China. Compared to this
scenario, India' par capita consumption is one of the lowest in the World.
The Rs. 22000-crore paper industry in India, rated 15th largest in world engages about
1.5 million people with the help of Rs. 2500 crore Government subsidy. Government
has given paper industry as one of the 35 high-priority lists.
There are about 515 manufacturing units of processing and production of paper.
Newsprint and paperboards in India which have the annual capacity of 8.3 million
tonnes, is likely to be 16 million tonnes by 2014. There are few state owned and
private players in the emerging paper industry like Hindustan Newsprint Ltd (HNL),
Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd (TNPL), Ballarpur Industries Ltd (BUILT),
Seshasayee Paper & Board Ltd. (SPBL), ITC Paper.
Domestic consumption move up by 6.40 lakh tonnes to 9.70 lakh tonnes, a CAGR
14.9%, while import went up by 12.50 lakh tonnes to 16.75 lakh tonnes, a CAGR of
10.3%.
Indian handmade paper industry is a vast industry comprising more than 157
handmade paper-producing divisions all over India. These 157 functional units
together manufacture paper worth around Rs. 21 crores and provide employment to
10,000 people.
FUTURE SCENARIO
The paper industry in India has become more promising as the domestic demand is on the
rise. Increasing population and literacy rate, growth in GDP, improvement in manufacturing
sector and lifestyle of individuals are expected to account for the growth in the paper industry
of India. BILT and ITC are among the largest producers of paper and paperboard in India.
Many of the existing players are increasing their capacity to meet the growing demand. The
focus of paper industry is now shifting towards more eco-friendly products and technology.
Government of India has established rules and regulations to control the population and
degradation of forest. These measures taken by the government has brought the significant
changes
in
the
paper
industry
of
India.
According to India Paper Industry Forecast & Opportunities, 2017 the paper industry in
India is expected to grow at the CAGR of around 9.6% during 2012-2017, which will make
the revenues of paper industry of India to reach up to USD 11.83 Billion by 2017. About 70%
of the total installed capacity of paper production in India is accounted by Gujarat, West
Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu,
Haryana, Kerala, Bihar and Assam together account for about 25% of the total paper
production in India.

Pollution Control Board.
TNPL Plantation Programme[edit]
As per the National Forest Policy, 1988, forest based Industries should raise the raw material
needed for meeting their own requirements. In accordance with the law, TNPL has embarked
upon development of a plantation in the year 2004-05 and launched two plantation schemes,
namely Farm Forestry and Captive Plantation.[7]
Farm Forestry[edit]
Under the farm forestry scheme, the Company motivates and facilitates the marginal and
small farmer to take up pulpwood plantation. The salient features of the Scheme are a supply
of quality planting material at subsidized cost, arranging credit facilities for the needy people
through banks, providing timely technical advice through a team of qualified professionals,
and buy back arrangement with minimum support prices or prevailing market rate at the time
of felling, whichever is higher, and harvesting and transport of pulpwood from the farmers
field to Factory at companys cost.
Captive Plantation[edit]
In the captive plantation scheme, Captive plantations are raised in the lands belonging to the
Company, Government Departments, and Educational institutions and in the large landholding individuals on a revenue sharing basis or on a lease rental basis. The minimum
criteria for captive plantation is that the land should be a block of 25 acres (100,000 m2) &
above in a single location whereas less than25 acres (100,000 m2) is also considered only in
the case of adjoining lands of existing captive plantations, provided the adjoining areas
should be contiguous to the existing plantation. TNPL enters into a MoU with the owners of
such lands for raising a Captive Plantation and undertaking the responsibility of land
development, establishment of plantations, maintenance of plantation and harvesting the
pulpwood at TNPLs expense. The land would be taken either on long term lease spanning
over a period of 6 to 30 years lease or on a gross revenue sharing basis. In the revenue
sharing pattern, if the plantation is raised in a barren land, the produce is shared between
TNPL and the landowner on a 70:30 basis and in case of wet lands, the revenue sharing
pattern is 60:40. In the case of lease mode, the lease rent for a barren land is Rs.1000/- per
acre, whereas for an irrigated land it is Rs.3000/- per acre every year paid to landowner and
the entire product is taken by TNPL.
In the last five years of operation (2004-05 to 2008-09), TNPL has raised plantation in 37,556
acres (151.98 km2) involving 8235 farmers in twenty eight districts in Tamil Nadu under the
Farm Forestry scheme and 2,735 acres (11.07 km2) under the Captive Plantation Scheme. In
all, TNPL has established pulpwood plantations in about 40291 acres (as on 31 March 2009).
[8]
To cater to the need for a huge amount of planting material to the tune of 15 million plants to
cover 15,000 acres (61 km2) every year, TNPL established a state-of-the-art clonal
propagation and research centre (CPRC) to achieve self-sufficiency in planting material and
production of quality clonal/ seedling plants with a capacity of 15 million plants per annum.
[9]
The clonal production centre was started with a mini clonal hedge garden of 4000 sq.m, a
mist chamber of 8000 sq.m, 5300 sq.m of hardening chamber and 20000 sq.m of open
nursery with updated technological innovations as per international standards. The clonal
production center was established at an outlay of about 500 lakhs. This is considered to be a
milestone in the plantation activities and assures quality planting material availability
throughout the year The above plantation schemes are being implemented throughout Tamil
Nadu through 10 regional offices in Karur, Manaparai, Tirunelveli, Karaikudi, Pudukottai,
Namakkal, Trichy, Tanjore, Jayangondam and Panruti providing advice and technical
assistance to tree growers.
FORESTRY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT:
TNPL has partnered with the NAIP-ICAR sponsored project titled "A value chain on
industrial Agro-forestry in Tamil Nadu" for Promotion of tree husbandry with improved short
rotation clones/genotypes through contract farming.[10] Forest College & Research Institute
(FC & RI), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Mettupalayam is the Consortium Leader of
this project. This project is being implemented for raising 500 acres (2.0 km2) of cluster
plantation in 10 Taluks covering 5 Districts in Tamil Nadu.
Solid waste management[edit]
Fly ash generated at the power boilers is being sold to the cement plants
TNPL has obtained the prestigious ISO 14001 Certification from RMTUV, Germany for
"Successfully establishing and applying environmental management system for development,
manufacture and supply of paper". This certification duly acknowledges TNPLs commitment
for environment protection and sustained efforts to minimise the overall environmental
impact.
TNPL has commissioned the Bio-methanation plant, which generates around 23000
m of biogas (methane) per day, to be used as fuel in the lime-kiln in replacement
offurnace oil. The biogas e replaces around 10-12 KL of furnace oil per day in the limekiln. During the year 2003-04, the bio- methanation plant generated 41.45 lakh
m3 ofmethane gas and replaced the use of furnace oil worth Rs.2.48 crores
3
TNPL obtained the 3 Leaves Award[11] under the Green Rating project of the Centre
for Science and Environment, New Delhi during October 2004, in recognition of the
Environment Management System.
ENERGY MANAGEMENT POLICY:
TNPL has installed its own power generating facility to make it 100% selfsufficient through the installation of 61.18 MW Power Generating equipments
(TG Sets) installed at the paper mill site. The surplus power generated is being
exported to the State Grid. TNPL also generates green power through the 18
MW wind farm installed at Devarkulam and Perungudi of Tirunelveli district. The
entire power generated at the wind farm is being exported to the State Grid. The
wind farm capacity has been enhanced to 21.75 MW in March 2004 by installing
3 wind turbine generators of 1250 kW capacity each. It has installed a Biomethanation plant to generate methane gas from the effluent water (bagasse wash
water) and use it as fuel as substitute for furnace oil in the lime kiln saving 10 KL
of furnace oil every day. During the year 2004-05 TNPL generated 34.12 lakh
m3 methane gas from its bio-methanation plant and used the same in lime-kiln
replacing 1886 KL of furnace oil valuing Rs. 2.02 Crores. The confederation of
Indian Industry has recognised the bio-methanation project implemented by TNPL
as an Innovative Project. This project contributes to sustainable development in
terms of generating in-house renewable energy and reducing green house gases.

innovation besides maintaining a disciplined approach to strive relentlessly towards our
goals. Since its establishment in 1955, we, at The West Coast Paper Mills Ltd., have focused
on growth from all aspects alongside the growth and development of our nation. In order to
fulfill our dreams and dreams of thousands of our stakeholders, we have made forays into
technological research that helps us in augmenting our growth.
Chairman's Message
"Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together." James
Cash Penney
The West Coast Paper Mills Ltd. (WCPM) has evolved in the last 61
years and is indebted for your constant support and encouragement
that has instilled in us the momentum to go ahead with our dreams.
We believe and envision a bright future for our nation and strive hard
to fulfill all requisites to achieve the same through innovation and
hard work. What we are today is a result of thousands of hands
working together to build this company that serves the nation in its
growth and development.
The government has supported our endeavours to build a strong industry, while we have
supported our nation by providing quality paper products that serve numerous industries like
printing and publishing, writing and packaging. Even when the world was hit by recession,
we successfully maintained our stability through our vision and strength.
Often we hear that we will become a paperless culture in the near future. However, in India it
will take many more years to become a reality due to less access to technology such the
Internet, boost in primary education, and the culture to keep a copy of all important
documents. Even then a paperless society will not happen in future as books will get
published and products will need to be packaged. Over the years, we aim to increase our
turnover rate through incremental sales.
The increasing demand for paper is fuelled mainly by the demand in developing countries
such as those in Asia and Africa, while demand for paper has decreased in developed
countries all over the world. WCPM has acted proactively to identify the market trend and
augmented its capacity on time. Therefore, we are poised to gain from the 'first-movers
advantage' in the paper market.
WCPM has invested wisely in securing raw materials, focusing on research on technological
development, complying with government policies on environment, and locking in capital
requirements. We have started to get results from these investments in the form of increased
profits, greater customer satisfaction, and a healthier environment.
I would like to use this opportunity to thank all our stakeholders as together we are about to
enter the premium segment in the industry. With hard work, innovation, and ambition, the
future is ours.

Infrastructure & Facilities
Location: The West Coast Paper Mill is located in Dandeli town on 240 acres of leasehold
land. The mill is connected through a broad gauge railway line on Miraj-Bangalore section at
Alnavar Junction, with railway lines that run up to the factory. We have additional 80 acres of
leased land for projects like railway siding, effluent treatment plant, and so on.
Raw Material: Wood derived from Casuarina, Eucalyptus, Subabul and other hardwoods are
the 100% ingredient for manufacturing paper in our units. In 1989, use of bamboo for paper
production was disallowed by the National Forest Policy. However, bamboo is not so much
endangered now, and is therefore, used in small quantities for manufacturing paper.
In order to manufacture some speciality papers, The West Coast Paper Mills Ltd. imports pine
wood pulp in small quantities. Our paper mill consumes up about 9,50,000 MT of raw
material per year. For raw materials we are dependent to a great extent upon private
cultivators in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Pondicherry. We strictly adhere to
eco-friendly environmental norms.
Water: At The West Coast Paper Mills Ltd., we require about 90,000 to 1,00,000 KL of
water per day, which is drawn from River Kali. We use pure and potable water having low
iron content for manufacturing paper.
Power: We use both self-generated and purchased power for production purposes. We have
achieved complete self-sufficiency in power generation. We also have surplus power capacity
upto 20 MW for export. Apart from self generation, we also have the provision for grid
connectivity of 8250 KVA. Our captive power generating capacity is 82.14 MW.
Steam: Our requirement for steam for manufacturing paper is met by four coal fired FBC
boilers with a steam generating capacity of 330 Mt/Hr and two chemical recovery boilers
with a capacity of 258 Mt/Hr.
Quality Control/Central Laboratory: For quality control and research on raw material and
processes, we have a fully equipped research lab near the paper mill. The central laboratory
carries out detailed analysis of water, process materials, effluent stack gases, and intermediate
product. Our quality control laboratory focuses on complaints, customer service, product
development, and testing, inspection, and monitoring of products and processes.
Research and Development Centre: The West Coast Paper Mills Ltd. has set up a separate
centre for research and development purposes in order to carry out research on various
activities using modern facilities.
Industrial Safety: In order to ensure the safety and security of all our employees, we have
set up a fully equipped Safety Department having trained and qualified professionals. We
have a fire brigade of our own and have positioned hydrants at strategic locations throughout
our manufacturing unit. At The West Coast Paper Mills, we are striving hard to reduce water
consumption for paper manufacturing.
Our production standards meet the requirements set by the Pollution Control Board for
treating air and water based effluents. The Consents under Air & Water Acts granted by
Karnataka State Pollution Control Board are valid.
Social Activities: We maintain a self-sufficient colony with temple, shopping complex,
hospital, club, theatre, cable TV network, and gym. Dandeli Education Society is our
education wing through which we run schools, two colleges for pre-university and degree
courses, and post-graduation courses in paper and pulp technology.
Labour: We have employed 2,442 individuals as on 31 March, 2012.

CAPTIVE PLANTATION
The research wing of The West Coast Paper Mills Ltd. works towards the promotion of
technology-based plantations. We have successfully made use of captive plantation
techniques to increase the productivity and sustainability of our plantations. The method of
clonal forestry used in captive plantation has gained wide acceptance in India.
Plantation managers and foresters having a progressive mindset have accepted this advanced
technology for increasing the green cover over land affected by deforestation. Over the years,
we have effectively adapted the clonal technology strategy for our tree improvement
programme. This is because clonal technology profitably captures and exploits the best
combinations and re-combinations of plant genes in the shortest possible time.
We ultimately aim to produce quality seeds through our tree improvement programme. A seed
carries the improvement made in one generation to the next generation. Therefore, promoting
only the best quality seeds will help in the faster and healthier growth of trees in captive
plantations as the improved and superior seeds are the most important source of propagation.
At our captive plantation centres, we collect and propagate full sib seeds or half sib seeds that
are the ones gathered from known sources or partially known sources. We use the well-
established practices and principles for plant breeding of trees. Our industrial plantations are
equally benefitted from these well known principles and practices.
Apart from this "Seed Orchards" are a means of obtaining large quantities of genetically
improved seeds by allowing selected outstanding trees (plus trees) or their progeny to cross,
usually under natural conditions. Cutting from the plus trees are used to establish clonal seed
orchards or seedlings raised from seed collected from the plus trees are used to make seedling
seed orchard. In both cases, the orchards are isolated and managed for seed production.
With a view to provide genetically superior, fast growing, disease resistant and best quality
planting stock for improving the yield from the plantations, vegetative propagation is an
excellent
approach.
Local community plantations and small holder agroforestry are also the ones that have
benefitted from our clonal forestry techniques for captive plantations. We aim to increase the
effectiveness of land in surrounding districts using tree improvement techniques for
agroforestry. Through our efforts we want to help rural communities to enhance the
productivity, suitability, and sustainability of their land use.
Our
tree
improvement
programme
consists
of
the
following:
Research on the types and causes of variability within a species.
Geographic sources within a species and germination of the species in a given area.
Using improved individuals for planting purposes through mass production.
Enhancing the qualities of improved individuals by packing them with the desired qualities.
Development and maintenance of a genetic base of tree population for advanced
generations.
The tree species and the source of seed within the species are the main determinants of the
success of our efforts and the productivity that we derive from captive forestry plantations. If
the proper species is used then higher gains from the forestry improvement programmes are
assured.

4. SESHASAYEE PAPER MILLS:
Founder
Sri S Viswanathan was the Founder of the Company . He was responsible for the growth of
the Company and bringing it to its present stature.
Affectionately referred to as SV, by his friends and associates , he was a lawyer-turned
freedom fighter-turned industrialist of a unique genre. He was a close associate of Sri Jaya
Prakash Narayan. He teamed up with Sri R Venkataraman, former President of India, to
practise Law at Chennai. He joined in 1957, the House of Seshasayees, a Managing Agency
firm of repute in that era. With the untimely death of Sri V Seshasayee , SV took on the
mantle, and his entrepreneurial drive and vision helped him establish, between 1958 and
1961, three Industrial enterprises, viz. Seshasayee Industries Limited, Simco Meters Ltd, and
Seshasayee Paper and Boards Ltd. He also promoted, later, Neyveli Ceramics Ltd,High
Energy Batteries(India) Ltd, Ponni Sugars & Chemicals Ltd, SPB Projects & Consultancy
Ltd, Esvin Advanced Technologies Ltd, etc.
The 'Magnum Opus' of SV was the creation of Tamil Nadu Newsprint & Papers Ltd. He took
total charge and responsibility from concept to commissioning of this project. This was the
first ever Mill to produce, successfully , newsprint out of sugarcane bagasse and continues to
be one of the top profit performers of the State Government.
He laid great emphasis on the use of Bagasse as raw material for the Paper Industry to
preserve forest cover and protect environment. His persistent thrust in this area has led to
more than 50% of paper production in the country now being made out of unconventional
raw materials, such as Bagasse. He promoted Ponni Sugars which became the first sugar mill
in the country, to use alternate fuel in its Boilers and release the Bagasse in entirety for Paper
Making. He innovatively structured Irrigation projects with multiple objectives of using
treated paper mill effluent for converting dry lands into wet lands, thus transforming the
livelihood of local farming community and simultaneously meeting the raw material needs of
both Sugar and Paper Industry.
Sri. SV was a Director on the Board of SPB from inception, representing the erstwhile
Managing Agents. He took over as Managing Director of the Company in April 1970, with
the abolition of the Managing Agency system. He became the Chairman and Managing
Director in December 1986, on the stepping down of Sri S Narayanaswamy, as Chairman of
the Company. He relinquished his office as Managing Director in April 1988 and continued
as Non-Executive Chairman of the Company till his very end.
He was a strong believer in team work and professionalism. He was firmly of the view that
the role of the Industry is not just to create wealth in a few hands, but must be extended to
serve rural development, poverty alleviation, employee welfare and society upliftment.
He paid great attention to operational details and played crucial role in nurturing the
Company to its profit-yielding status. He was the inspiration behind the Company launching
the recently completed Expansion / Modernisation Scheme. He was a 'visionary' par
excellence and 'Karmayogi', non-pareil.
He passed away on July 22, 2001, after a brief illness
In his passing away, our Company has lost its Guiding Star and the void is hard to fill.
Though he is no more, his lofty ideals will always be the guiding spirit in all our activities.
Vision
To excel as a trusted, socially responsible and customer driven organization
providing maximum value to all stake holders.
Mission
To manufacture quality products at competitive cost through technology and
team work.
Values
The Company
Seshasayee Paper and Boards Limited (SPB), the flagship company belonging to 'ESVIN
GROUP', operates an integrated pulp, paper and paper board Mill at Pallipalayam, Erode-638
one more digester, to increase the share of the hardwood in the furnish mix to 80% and
restricting bamboo use to only 20%.
With the commissioning of more wood based industries in Tamilnadu, there was again an
apprehension about availability of hardwood.
As a long term strategy, the Company at this time decided on restructuring use of bagasse
which was seen to be the most reliable source of fibre for the entire Industry.
In 1984, the Company promoted Ponni Sugars and Chemicals Limited, as the captive source
for bagasse supply. It added bagasse handling systems and modernised PM-1 and PM-2, to
shift over to the use of bagasse.
The furnish mix for the existing Paper Machines of the Company is 55% bagasse and 45%
hardwood. The Company has vast experience in handling bagasse and is expected to be one
of the major strong points vis--vis its competitors in India, as the Indian Paper Industry will
continue to be bogged down by the problem of raw material availability.
For the new Paper Machine, the furnish is imported waste paper and imported pulp which are
sourced from far east countries, Europe and USA. A small quantity is supplemented out of
captive pulp production.
Exports performance
SPB's exports are nearly 20% of its production and is a significant exporter in the Indian
Paper Industry. Due to its excellent export performance, SPB has been awarded 'Golden
Export House' status.

CHAPTER-4
Findings, suggestions and Conclusion
FINDINGS:
The Major Factor for the slow growth of Paper industry is scare
availability of raw materials trees.
Involves in huge Funds.
Scale of Recycle is not as supported to be.
Environmental and Social Issue like deforestration is obstacles.
Lack of Government Support.
Monopoly Situation is seen in Some Industries.
SUGGESTIONS:
Thus, here by on the basis of my understanding & observation, I would like to put
forward few suggestions & recommendations to the company as well as on the entire
topic as well.
The company should sustain the availability of good quality of raw material (forest
based) & bulk import of waste paper to supplement the availability of raw material.
Also with respect to above statement I would like to recommend the company to
encourage afforestation, in the nearby locations such as Rampur from where the major
source of raw material is supplied i.e. eucalyptus & popular trees, for w.p.p (wood
based paper plant) (major paper manufacturing plant).
R&D technological absorption should be emphasized upon to enhance the
productivity by maintaining the quality of copier/writing/printing paper.
The company should make good profile investments in advertisements which are
directly linked with customers.
I would also like to recommend the company to hire a brand ambassador for the
advertisement purpose, it may be any celebrity. However if the company feels like
that this investment would be a cost burden they can look for some socially renowned
face who has a premium image & is available at cheaper rates.
The company should take new measures for the promotion of the products. It should
make use of more effective marketing techniques in order to sustain its clients.
Conclusion:
During the research process it was found that an amazing world of big machineries & their
process which were in continuous operation to deliver the final product.
It can never be thought that developing a small sheet of paper would require such immense &
arduous tasks of both men & machinery.
Also, apart from processes some major findings on behalf of the data collected from in and
outside the paper industry helped in drawing a certain conclusion. It can cited as follows:
The new era of upcoming generation is going to be knowledge based, so demand for
paper would go on increasing in upcoming years. In view of paper industrys strategic
role for the society & also for the overall industrial growth it is necessary that the
paper industry performs well.
The demand for upstream market of paper products like: TISSUE PAPER, FILTER
PAPERS, LIGHT WEIGHT ONLINE COATED PAPER, MEDICAL GRADE
QUOTED PAPER, etc, is growing due to increase in population & more & more
facilitation. These developments are expected to give fill up to the industry.
Due to industrialization & globalization there is huge demand & potential of paper &
allied products.
Corporate sector, computerization in banks, financial & other institutions has opened
a great market opportunity for a new sector that is COPIER PAPER.
As per the information collected through the sales & marketing department of the
company, a major consumption & demand is seen in Delhi & NCR region, where
therefore are maximum number of dealers that too with very high allocated size.
Paper industry is very risky & tough growth business as the raw material consists of
hazardous chemicals like cl 2,so2,hcl,clo2 etc & therefore performance is the only
key to success.
Transportation to these high consumption areas is quick, and authentic. It was found
that the availability of contingency plans is not that strong ,as far as the planned
transportation is required.
Talking to the dealers it was observed that relationships among dealers & consumers
of CPP industries reflects the companys policy of relationship building, but it could
be further increased by providing some sale or motivational schemes & policies.
It was also found that Century Pulp & Paper industries is very prompt in providing
product variety at a time ,most of the orders of CPP are full filled in time and as per
specific requirements. Company emphasizes lot on packaging methods undertaken,
so as to ensure safety of product during transit.
As the production in the unit goes on 24*7, so the employees work on basis of shifts.
The maintenance of the heavy machineries is a compulsion in this case,& thus
company has qualified engineers & technical staff which is well trained, they all work
hard & their endeavors have lead the company to the no.1 position in the paper
industry.
