RUNNING HEAD: REVIEW OF ARTICLE ON APPS IN THE ELA CLASSROOM 3

The use of Class Dojo is increasing nationwide and has become an important
component in many teachers classroom management strategy. Its effectiveness depends
greatly on the teachers cautious ability to use the app efficiently and accurately.
In his 2015 article Just a Click Away Dan Florell praises the app Class Dojo as an
effective academic, and classroom management tool. Florell suggests that before using
Class Dojo teachers should be certain that using a third party app for student data
collection is not contradictory to school or district policy, especially regarding whether
parents or caretakers must consent to its use.
Class Dojo participants choose a monster icon who then personifies the student and
accumulates points and non-points according to teacher recorded data. Class Dojo has
features which randomize the teacher's prompt for point attention. Hence teachers avoid
accidental favoritism or criticism according to personal notions. Students enjoy the
colorful and playful aspects of the app's monster and in this regard this app can acts as a
student motivator.
Class Dojo can be used to take attendance or to track individual student behavior or
the behavior of the whole class as a group. The data that Class Dojo collects can be
displayed for the entire class to see simultaneously or can be viewed on individual
students devices such as cellphones, tablets, or computers. It can also be connected to
guardians' and administrators' devices. All participants in the student's education may
follow the progress of behavior, participation, and attendance-based concerns and
benefits.

The author mentions that one of the notable disadvantages to Class Dojo was that the
cuteness of the monsters and the animated and competitive nature of accumulating dojo
points can become a distraction to students and hence teachers.
Another concern is the privacy issues raised by an instructor not receiving prior
parental permission to contact third parties regarding their students' information. Also
instructors should seek administrator or district approval before using an electronic thirdparty to help manage behavior and other classroom functions.
I chose to write about this app as I have utlizied it as a parent. I found it to be very
useful for the daily "touch-base" that is required to manage a child's education. I
appreciated that it kept me abreast of classroom activities and my child's behavior. It was
easy to contact the teacher without opening an email app. It was easy to respond to the
classroom as a whole and arrange schedules and volunteer events.
As a teacher I will try Class Dojo if I can get student and caretaker buy-in. Many of
the features seem useful like the anonymity feature which allows one way
communication with students if necessary. Features like this can give teachers control
over the level of e-communication they wish to engage. I will however heed the advice of
the author and address my concerns immediately to administrators should I decide to use
this app upon returning to the classroom.
