Summer Training Report Civil Engineering

This document is a summer training report submitted by Love Malik to fulfill requirements for a Bachelor of Technology degree in Civil Engineering. It describes two construction projects undertaken during the summer training: 1) Construction of a U-type storm drain to regulate water flow along roads. Measurements were taken and dimensions recorded to estimate costs. The drain was constructed by excavating to depth, laying concrete, and constructing brick walls. 2) Repair work and whitewashing of existing structures which involved scraping old coatings, patching plaster, and applying distemper. The report includes details of the projects, specifications, measurements, cost estimates, and conclusions from the training.

Abstract
This report describes two small scale construction projects namely, construction of U-type storm
drain and repair work and whitewash. The main aim of constructing a U-type storm drain was to
regulate the flow of water through and across the road . The roads were surveyed and the
measurements were taken accordingly. The dimensions were recorded for estimating the total
cost of constructing the U-type storm drain. The Earth was first excavated at the site to a depth of
60 cms and the bottom surface was plastered with 10 cms thick C.C (1:4:8). The brick drainwalls each of height 45 cms and of width 23 cms and 35 cms were respectively constructed. The
Exposed inner surfaces were lined with 15 cms thick plaster (1:4) plaster and the exposed outer
surfaces were lined with 5 cms thick P.C.C (1:1.5:3) plaster.
In the second construction project, the existing coat of color was first scraped out and all the
voids existing were covered with white cement. The surface was allowed to air dry and then
watered to add moisture. The walls were then coated with a layer of oil-bound washable
distemper. For repairing the walls the old plaster was first raked out and cleaned with sand paper
for making the surface smooth. The repair work was done as patches of area 2.5 sqm, of
thickness 12 mm to 20 mm with cement mortar (1:4).

Chapter 1 : INTRODUCTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Lok Nirman Vibhag popularly known as P.W.D. has a legacy of more than 130 years. P.W.D. is
responsible for construction, maintenance and planning of roads, bridges and Govt. Buildings. In
view of strategic location of Uttarakhand bordering China & Nepal, the responsibility of P.W.D.
becomes of much more attentive from defense point of view.
As part of graduation requirements, all the undergraduates, the third year and forth year students,
who take bachelor of Civil Engineering in LPU will undergo industrial training programme for a
duration of six weeks. This industrial training is a course for undergraduates that gives them an
opportunity to expose themselves in the real career world so as to they will learn how to relate
theoretical learning before and real practical in workings environment. Besides that, in future,
they will be having good preparation and understanding for their field of profession.

1.2 THE OBJECTIVE OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING:

Undergraduates have an opportunity to expose themselves in workings environment

of their field of profession respectively.

For obtaining workings experience in the industry which is relating to their field
of current study.

Using knowledge which is obtained from industrial training for their study
after finishing training and continuing study at university afterwards.

Training them to be capable in communication and interaction

b e t w e e n w o r k e r s a n d s u p e r i o r.

Training them to be able to prepare a technical report which is related to industrial

training they do.

1.3 THE SCOPE OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING:

Observing the whole operation of this industry.

Doing operations work that is involved in unit production by either using machine
or tool.

Work that involving installment and fabrication of tool.

9

Visual inspection and quality control on the final product.

Repairing an y damaged tool if it still can use, or buying a new tool

to replace it.

Discussion and meeting with superior.

2.1.2 Detailed work :

For the mentioned work, from C.C Road and Pratap road to Puri General Store (1150
mts), from Guru Nanak Road to Manav Kendra (1500 mts), from Bhagat Singh Road to Arun
Sharma's residence (700 mts and 300 mts); provided U-type storm drain as per the
specifications. The pre-existing U-type drain which had undergone damage was repaired to
prevent the water from standing still and getting stagnant. The provision for providing the Utype drain was most appropriate as it provided 'reverse grade' to the water. Therefore, U-type
drains were suggested to be provided.

2.1.3 Specifications :
All the works were carried out as per Detailed Specifications of PWD Uttarakhand and
as directed by Engineer in Charge and Circulars issued by Chief Engineer (level-I) from

Chapter 3: CONCLUSION
3.1 Conclusion
The 6 weeks training that I received at PWD was great experience for me not only
on technical terms but also in terms of interaction with other workers. I learnt a
great deal on applying the knowledge I have gained at the University. Learning
something from books and lectures is nothing like having firsthand experience. At
Loadstar I got to apply my Civil Engineering knowledge. The company gives the
full freedom for the trainee to get a sufficient training. The trainees are allowed to
ask and do anything relevant to the training. Engineers are always very enthusiastic
on giving us the best training experience. The employees do not think of their
designation but only on the work to be done. Teamwork has been excellent and all
of them are like best friends, even with lower ranked employees like Drivers,
Office aids. And also they are most often at the sites with all kinds of employees.
Everyone was friendly from top to bottom. Employees are busy with their work but
they always help us to improve our knowledge.
3.2 Drawbacks during the training
A drawback I see in PWD is that it has many health hazards. Employees are exposed to large
amounts of dust. When inhaled, these particles can cause serious lung disease.
Even though there is a rule to wear protective masks, employees do not do so most
of the time. They should be urged to wear protective gear and lectured on negative
consequences of not wearing them. Also unlike in CEB where the safety is
measured by the number of accidents in a given time period, in Loadstar, it is the
number of deaths that is shown. I attached the copy of the Certificate obtained by
PWD.
3.3 Future Scope
As an undergraduate of the Lovely professional University I would like to say
that this training program is an excellent opportunity for us to get to the ground
level and experience the things that we would have never gained through going
straight into a job. I am grateful to Lovely professional University and PWD for
giving us this wonderful opportunity. The main objective of the industrial training
is to provide an opportunity to undergraduates to identify, observe and practice
30

how engineering is applicable in the real industry. It is not only to get experience
on technical practices but also to observe management practices and to interact
with fellow workers. It is easy to work with sophisticated machines, but not with
people. The only chance that an undergraduate has to have this experience is the
industrial training period. I feel I got the maximum out of that experience. Also I
learnt the way of work in an organization, the importance of being punctual, the
importance of maximum commitment, and the importance of team spirit. The
training program having three destinations was a lot more useful than staying at
one place throughout the whole six weeks. In my opinion, I have gained lots of
knowledge and experience needed to be successful in a great engineering
challenge, as in my opinion, Engineering is after all a Challenge, and not a Job.
