Graduation Ceremonies
Introduction
Graduation seLVes to mark the transition from student or undergraduate status to
graduate or diplomate status which accords membership of the University. The
ceremony emphasises this in a number of different, but related, traditional ways,
reflecting both the long Western academic tradition and Maori tradition.
At the start of the ceremony, after the academic procession has entered the
auditorium, there will be a powhiri, which is a formal Maori welcome. This seLVes
to welcome the graduands and diploma recipients as fully-fledged members of the
University community.
While most of those receiving awards will have entered the auditorium before the
powhiri, the masters and doctoral graduands will represent all the group when they
enter in the traditional Maori manner during the powhiri. They will be called into the
auditorium by taua (older women) from the .Kai Tahu, the takata whenua (people of
the land) of Lincoln University. This call is called a karaka. The call will be answered
by a taua accompanying the graduands. The masters and doctoral graduands will
move slowly into the auditorium while the karaka takes place. The karaka will be
followed by a toia mai (a welcome haka).
A kaumatua of the Kai Tahu, will then give a speech of welcome. The Lincoln
University Maori Cultural Group will follow this with a waiata (song), Whakapapa
Pounamu. The words of the waiata are printed on page 6 of this progranune.
One of the Ph.D. graduands will present the pounamu. The pounamu symbolises
the education that those receiving awards have undertaken. As rough greenstone is
smoothed and polished, it gains in beauty. The pounamu, which will sit at the front
of the stage, opposite the mace, symbolises the way in which the graduates or
diplomates have been "polished" by their education at Lincoln.
During the ceremony, each graduand is called on to the stage by name. In the centre
of the stage, each is 'capped' by the Chancellor of the University to signify the
conferral of a degree. Having had the degree conferred, the new graduate is then
free to put on the trencher, which is the symbol of graduate status. The Academic
Registrar of the University hands the graduate a parchment which has been sealed
with the University seal and which certifies the conferral of the degree. The graduate
then returns to his or her seat in the auditorium, wearing the trencher.
After the degrees have been conferred and the diplomas presented, the Chancellor
calls all present to rise and sing one verse of the National Anthem, symbolising the
part played by the University in the nation's life. Following this, the audience is
asked to sing the medieval academic anthem Gaudeamus, the words of which are to
be found on page 7 of this progranune.
The esquire bedel then takes the mace and leads the procession, the graduates and
the diplomates from the auditorium.

Academic Dress
In corrunon with English universities, universities in New Zealand have a system
of academic dress which is worn by graduates and diplomates to indicate their
qualifications. This dress has evolved through the centmies from the everyday
clothing of students and teachers in the universities of the middle ages. The
gown was a medieval topcoat or cloak and the hood, a headcover.
The Lincoln University undergraduate diploma gown is black with green
facings.
The bachelors gown is of Norman origin and the masters gown is of Tudor
inspiration. The cap for all graduates, other than doctors, is a black trencher
with a tassel. Doctoral graduates wear a velvet bonnet.
Gowns for Lincoln degrees, except for doctorates, are black. The Lincoln Ph.D.
gown is black with blue facings, while for higher doctorates, the gowns are red
with facings of blue (Doctor of Science), gold (Doctor of Corrunerce) or green
(Doctor of Natural Resources).
At Lincoln University, the different hood colours denote the different degrees.

Biographical Notes on
Candidates for Doctoral Degrees
Doctor of Cormnerce honoris causa
VICKI SUSAN BUCK
Vicki Buck is best !mown for her work during her three terms
as Mayor of Christchurch.
Ms Buck was first elected to the Christchurch City Council in 1975 at
the age of 19 while still a student at the University of Canterbury, and
has served on the Council ever since. She subsequently completed a
Master of Arts in political science, with a thesis in local government
finance. From 1977 until 19S3, she worked as a social worker.
As a city councillor and as Mayor, Ms Buck has given particular
priority to creating an environment that will lead to enhanced business
development and to job creation in the region. During a period when the
economy was in recession, Vicki Buck promoted business opportunities
in Christchurch and created a positive attitude in business and in the
population at large. She has led the development of the annual cycle of
Christchurch festivals that have promoted Christchurch as a destination
for tourists and other visitors.
In addition to her work as Mayor, Ms Buck is a director of Christchurch
City Holdings Ltd, the Community Trust, and the Canterbury
Development Corporation. She is a former local government
commissioner and a former member of the board of the Reserve Bank.
She is also a shareholder and director of the Christchurch College of
English Language, a private training provider in which Lincoln University
also has a holding.

NGENANGAKJANGU
Ngenang Jangu came to Lincoln University in 1992 and completed a
Master of Agricultural Science degree in the Department of Farm and
Horticultural Management. In 1994, he began to study for a Ph.D. under
the supervision of Dr S K Martin of the Department of Farm and
Horticultural Management with associate supervision from Professor
P E Earl of the Department of Economics and Marketing, and Dr J R
Fairweather of the Agribusiness Economics Research Unit.
In his research, Ngenang Jangu identified four classifications of people
who do not adopt new technologies. He isolated the mental constructs
of each group with respect to a particular innovation, and compared
these constructs between groups and also with those of a group of
adopters. The research shows that non-adopters are not a homogeneous
group, as had often been previously assumed. The practical implication
of this research is that innovations need to be specifically targeted if the
uptake of a new technology is to be increased.

Jack Kee Hock Loo took a Lincoln University Bachelor of Commerce and
Management in 1993 and then completed a Bachelor of Commerce with first
class honours and a Master of Commerce and Management with distinction
in management. His masters thesis examined the ethics of university
students in New Zealand and related ethical beliefs and practices to
ethnicity.
Having completed his masters degree, Mr Loo began research for his Ph.D.
under the supervision of Dr D A Sauers, Dr D L Dean, J G Kennedy and
C G Lamb of the Department of Economics and Marketing. The thesis
entitled, The relative contributions of transformational and transactional
leadership to team climate and innovation performance, examines forms
of leadership and assesses the ways in which leadership behaviour relates
to the innovation of groups.
Mr Loo has now taken up a management position with Ernst and Young
