b. A B =
c. A B = B
d. A B = A
2. Is it true that for any sets A and B, P( A ) P( B ) = P ( A B )? Justify your
answer.
3. Show that if A B, then C B C A.
4. Show that for any sets A and B, A = ( A B ) ( A B ) and A ( B A ) =
(AB)
5. Using properties of sets, show that
a. A ( A B ) = A
b. A ( A B ) = A.
6. In a survey of 60 people, it was found that 25 people read newspaper H,
26 read newspaper T, 26 read newspaper I, 9 read both H and I, 11 read
both H and T, 8 read both T and I, 3 read all three newspapers. Find:
a. The number of people who read at least one of the newspapers.
b. The number of people who read exactly one newspaper.
7. In a survey it was found that 21 people liked product A, 26 liked product B
and 29 liked product C. If 14 people liked products A and B, 12 people liked
products C and A, 14 people liked products B and C and 8 liked all the
three products. Find how many liked product C only.

9. As shown in the accompanying figure, an open box is to be constructed

from a rectangular sheet of metal, 8 in by 15 in, by cutting out squares
with sides of length x from each corner and bending up the sides.
a. Express the volume V as a
function of x.
b. Find the domain of V.
c. Plot the graph of the
function V obtained in part
(a) and estimate the range
of this function.
d. In words, describe how the volume V varies with x, and discuss how
one might construct boxes of maximum volume.
