Axalta Coating Systems Examines How Lightweight Multi-Substrate Body Design and
Low Bake Coatings Are Drivers for Innovation and a Challenge for Coating Technology
By Dr. Klemens Bartmann, Global Director Technology OEM for Axalta Coating Systems
Driven by a strong move
towards sustainability, vehicle body design is going
through a radical change.
In response to this, Axalta
Coating Systems has been looking at
ways to meet the challenges that these
new lightweight materials are presenting.
Increasing pressure from regulatory
bodies has been put on the automotive
industry to move towards more sustainable materials and processes. Over several decades, regulatory requirements,
such as reduction of organic solvent
emission, overall CO2 reduction and increased fuel efficiency, have prompted
the coatings industry to develop new,
ecologically sustainable coatings, like
high solids or waterborne materials, and
consolidated systems such as primerless,
two-wet or three-wet systems. In order to
reduce the overall weight of the car body,
the OEMs want to increase the usage
of lower weight materials, including aluminium and magnesium and polymeric
substrates. Paint shop processes and materials need to be adapted accordingly. In
the case of polymeric substrates, the baking temperatures for the coating hardening processes need to be lowered.
The lightweight materials help to cut
down CO2 emissions in the paint shop,
as energy consumption can be reduced
when using low bake materials. These
materials also offer enhanced styling
capabilities due to new opportunities in
part and vehicle geometry. The possibility
of on-line and in-line coating of body and
plastic parts means there is an opportunity to improve color harmony and to simplify the supply chain complexity.
However, these lightweight substrates
will create challenges when it comes to
coating technologies. For instance, new
adhesion processes need to be developed, which can impact on the baking
of adhesives and coatings. Long-term
durability and re-coatability of lower bake

Ton Bchner: 2015, even though market conditions were challenging, was the year in which we successfully delivered our
2015 financial targets.
For our Decorative Paints business, we made significant
progress and have the right strategy in place to continue the momentum we have built up. ROS was up 8.6 percent, ROI was up
11.7 percent and RD&I investments have resulted in 28 percent
of revenue derived from eco-premium solutions with customer
benefits. In addition, we saw a 4 percent decrease of CO2(e) per
ton of sales from 2012 cradle-to-grave carbon footprint.
For our Performance Coatings business, we delivered a
step change in profitability and positioned ourselves for profitable organic growth. ROS was up 13.3 percent, ROI was
up 29.4 percent and RD&I investments have resulted in 15
percent of revenue derived from eco-premium solutions with
customer benefits.
John Falder: Generally good but some of it at the expense of

in a peculiar position Yes the short term gains are welcome but
we need our suppliers to invest too. HMGs approach is that
our supply chain is vital part of our business. We see the world
market as fragile. HMG is tiny in global terms but even at our
scale affected by the confidence of the market overall.
Markus Kamieth: About 80 percent of BASFs global Coatings
sales relate to the automotive sector. The automotive industry developed very heterogeneously in 2015. While especially
North America and Western Europe showed robust growth,
other markets such as South America and Russia saw steep declines. Automotive production in China as the most important
growth market did not live up to our expectations, but we have
again managed to outgrow the market based on new innovative
Coatings systems and by opening our new production facilities.
Michael McGarry: In 2015, our customers have placed continuing emphasis on the true value that coatings bring to them
and their products in the form of protecting and beautifying
their assets.

Bchner: Achieving our 2015 financial targets represents significant progress for the company. However, we know we must continue to improve to achieve our vision of leading performance
in all the markets in which we operate. So we are maintaining
that same vision for the next phase of our strategy development,
which includes new financial guidance. For the period 20162018, our guidance is: return on sales between 9 and 11 percent,
return on investment between 13 and 16.5 percent and clear
aim to build on the foundation we have created and grow in line
with, or faster than, our relevant market segments.
Falder: We see the opportunities for us growing but we want to
remain a speciality house. HMG set out to be a good company
to do business with. Growth we see as a by-product of the job
we do for our customers. We aim to grow at an organic or organic plus level year on year, but in business we accept we get
what we deserve.
Kamieth: We expect 2016 to be another year characterized by
high volatility which is why a clear focus on attractive markets
as well as overall agility remains key. Our recent announcement
to divest our Industrial Coatings business underlines this strategy and allows to further increase our focus on the attractive

McGarry: From an overall PPG perspective, we remain focused on delivering higher organic growth including continued
commercialization of our innovative industry leading coatings
technologies. Over the past several years, we have deployed
many new or leading technologies for our end-used markets.
These include our compact process technology for automotive
OEM coatings, which has been widely adopted by customers
as it reduces their facility, construction cost and ongoing operating cost.
Our water-based automotive refinish coatings is now the
leading water-based product in the industry. Weve converted
more auto body repair shops at waterborne coatings than the
rest of the entire coatings industry combined. Our new Innovel

the past year. This allowed us to deliver mid-single-digit percentage growth, which is well above the packaging coatings industry
growth rates, with more to come in 2016.
In addition to organic growth, we will continue to be aggressive on cost and productivity initiatives. This is a never-ending
quest for PPG, and we are always looking for better ways to
improve our cost structure.
Finally, our balance sheet remains strong, as we ended the
year with cash and short-term investments of $1.5 billion. We
intend to continue creating shareholders value through earnings
accretive cash deployment. We remain on-pace with our prior
commitments to deploy between $2 billion and $2.5 billion of
cash in the years 2015 and 2016 combined, including the $1.15
billion we deployed in 2015. We expect coatings industry consolidation to continue in 2016. Our pipeline remains strong as
we continue to vest potential acquisitions around the world.
Share repurchases also remain an integral part of our capital

Tinting systems in the 1950s
changed forever the way that
decorative paints are sold. Prior to World
War II and during the immediate postwar period, paints were supplied in a limited range of colors and retailers had to
stock a large range of ready-made colors
to meet customer demand. The arrival of
tinting systems led to dramatic changes;
all retailers needed were base paints and
a tinting machine to supply an immense
range of colors, while inventory and production for both the supplier and paint
store was reduced. Most countries and
paint producers quickly adapted to this
change and soon this became the standard way of supplying decorative paints.1
Paint tinting systems are designed to
deliver color to achieve the exact shade
desired by the end customer. The tinting
systems include colorants, dispensing and
mixing equipment, software and a color
formula database matched to the color
marketing tools.2 The selected colors
are prepared by accurately dosing the
colorants into a base paint, followed by
mixing to produce the finished color. In
order to achieve maximum operational
efficiency, paint producers will use universal colorants to tint a wide range of
different base paint chemistries, carriers
and formulations.
Most universal colorants have traditionally been based on glycols to ensure
compatibility with different carriers, and
contain the appropriate pigments, fillers, dispersants, thickeners and other
additives.3,4 However, recent changes

The experiments show that nonionic

additives help the stabilization of the pigments by slowing down or compensating
for the migration of dispersants and other

Introduction
Figure 1 : FTIR spectra of standard additive 1 and Sweet Sap; differences are noted by superimposing
(interfering) waves in the fingerprint region.
March 2016
Experimental
Tree extract, or sap, is collected from
Date Palm trees and is normally sweet,
milky white and translucent, with nearly
neutral pH. Initially the sap is free of
microorganisms; however, environmental contamination leads to fermentation
converting it into acids and alcohol.2
Increased temperatures help in rapid
growth of the microorganisms; however,
even storage in lower temperatures do
not help once contaminated.
Although the Sweet Sap has been used
successfully in making emulsions, and
subsequently paints, the major challenge
was to stabilize it by preventing the initiation of fermentation. Three different
means were tried to stabilize the Sweet
Sap to prevent fermentation: (a) doping
with amino alcohol and maintaining at
higher pH; (b) addition of 5% methylated spirit (Trial 1); addition of 2% fungicides (Trial 2).
The first approach, caused a brown
coloration on storage and was discarded
after four months of storage. Studies have
continued with the other two routes.
Clearly it is different from the standard which is visible from the fingerprint
region. The same exercise was also carried out after ten months of sample preservation. The stability of the Sweet Sap
after 10 months was also checked by
FTIR analysis.
In this system of two immiscible liquids, water molecules are dispersed in the
continuous phase of a long oil alkyd. The
experimental Sweet Sap is added to the
alkyd medium thinned with mineral turpentine oil at 600 to 1000 rpm and run
for 15 minutes. The Sweet Sap, which is
partially soluble in the oil phase, is preferentially adsorbed to the alkydwater
interface. The water is added slowly at
1000 rpm to the system which causes the
water molecules to disperse and become
coated with hydrophilic Sweet Sap molecules. As the emulsion is sheared, larger
water droplets are stretched and ruptured
into smaller droplets. The sizes of the dispersed water droplets were in the range
of a few nanometers to a few microns and
are not visible to the unaided eye.
White pigment (rutile grade TiO2) was
dispersed in a long oil alkyd medium without using any dispersing/wetting additive
and the emulsion made was added during
letdown. Formulations are as shown in
Figure 2.

Elevance Partner
Collaborations Advance
Second-Generation
Biorefinery Technology
In collaboration with several partners, including the special contribution of Versalis
under a strategic partnership started in
early 2014, Elevance Renewable Sciences,
Inc. a high-growth company that creates novel specialty chemicals from natural oils has successfully completed
scale-up of a second-generation biorefinery technology of the companys olefin
metathesis technology, utilizing ethylene
and natural oil feedstocks.
The ethenolysis process advancement
represents an important milestone for the
development of a second-generation metathesis technology the first of its kind
enabling an enhanced product portfolio from natural oils metathesis.
Catalysts produced by XiMo AG
were used at Soneas manufacturing facility in Budapest, Hungary. The run represented a scale up of 40,000 times what
had been previously demonstrated in the
laboratory and the largest ever usage of
Schrock (Molybdenum/Tungsten) catalysts for metathesis with ethylene and a
renewable oil.
This significant accomplishment advances the interests of several of our partners and demonstrates the advantages of
working together, said Mel Luetkens,
COO at Elevance. Elevance is pleased
to be at the center of this collaboration
and to be advancing these important developments for our partners and us. It is
another validation of Elevances technology and the value that we bring to our
partner relationships.
XiMo AG, a company focused on the
development and application of proprietary metathesis catalysts, and Elevance
began working together in January 2011,

Evoniks Polyamide 12
Wins European Plastics
Innovation Award
The Resource Efficiency Segment of the
Essen-based Evonik Group received the
European Plastics Innovation Award in
the Material Innovation category for its
use of polyamide 12 (PA 12) VESTAMID
NRG in high-pressure gas pipelines.
European Plastics Converters (EuPC),
the Association of Plastics Manufacturers
in Europe, and the Society of Plastics
Engineers (SPE) had organized the joint
award for the first time in eight different categories. It recognizes companies
that have attracted public attention with
particularly innovative developments in
Industry News
plastics technology.
VESTAMID NRG offers an
outstanding property profile
for high-pressure pipelines and
enables gas utilities to effectively build
up their subterranean pipeline networks
without any concern about losses in
throughput performance. A number of
installations, including in the U.S., Brazil,
Mexico and Indonesia, have demonstrated that pipes made of PA 12 allow for significant savings in labor and installation
cost compared to steel.
In its rationale for the award, the jury,
made up of representatives from universities, politics, NGOs and the media,
highlighted Evoniks decade-long intensive research that resulted in gas pipe
materials for the high-pressure segment
up to 18 bar and their installation, along
with the companys efforts to support
the requisite approvals. The most recent
step in the safety-relevant authorization
of the material is its inclusion in the test
specification by the German Association
of Gas and Water (DVGW) of December
2015, entitled Plastic piping systems in
gas and water distribution; GW335-A6:
Pipes made of PA-U 160 and PA-U 180
and associated fittings and joints.
This test specification will pave the
way for installations in Germany, says
Markus Hartmann, Head of the Oil &
Gas segment, who oversees the Evonik
business with VESTAMID NRG. Our
experiences with installations involving
our coordinated system of straight and
rolled-up pipes from 32 to 160 mm made
of VESTAMID NRG and the associated
fittings have been very good so far.
The flexible selection of lengthespecially over extended installation sectionssaves time and cost because fewer
welding seams are required. Installers can
use the same equipment as for PE pipes.
In addition, no anti-corrosive treatment is
required and the material enables trenchless installation, which also lowers cost.
VESTAMID has been used by renowned manufacturers for over 50 years.
While the first applications included automotive duct systems, the continuous
advancement of the material eventually
led to its use in large-volume pipes for oil
and gas production and distribution.CW
