    (i) Skew rays. (ii) Acceptance angle. (iii) V-number.
    (b) A step index multimode fiber with a numerical aperture of 0.20 supports approximately 1000 modes.
    At 850 nm wavelength, what is the diameter of its core? How many modes does the fiber support at
    1320 nm?

    (a) Explain the chalcogenide glass fibers.


    (b) Describe the Scattering and Absorption losses in optical fibers.

    (a) Explain the concept of polarization mode dispersion and intermodal dispersion in optical fiber.
    (b) Explain about connector return loss in optical fibers.

    (a) Derive the expression for Quantum efficiency in LEDs.


    (b) Explain the different types of splicing techniques of optical fiber cables.

    (a) What is equilibrium numerical aperture? Explain the significance of equilibrium numerical aperture
    on source to fiber power coupling.
    (b) Derive the expression for maximum optical power coupled from a LED into a fiber.

    (a) Describe the operation of Avalanche Photo Diode as an optical detector.


    (b) Explain the quantum limit of a fiber optic receiver and probability of error.

    (a) Describe the optical system design considerations and also component choice.
    (b) Calculate the overall fiber dispersion in multimode and single mode fibers.
