WORLDVIEW: DEFINITION AND TYPES

Worldview refers to the way in which human beings look at the world. According to Paige
and Martin, worldview is one of the lenses through which people view reality and the rest
of the world. In the words of Helve, worldview is a systematized totality of beliefs about
the world.

Types of Worldview
Helve classifies worldview into three types scientific, metaphysical, and religious.
Scientific Worldview: This worldview is based on
the rules of science. This worldview is dynamic
and subject to change because scientific rules keep
changing based on new findings and experiments.

Metaphysical Worldview: This is in contrast to the

scientific worldview. It is based on ones general
thoughts, feelings, beliefs, fears and uncertainties.
For instance, the metaphysical worldview of
children may contain beliefs in Santa Claus,
ghosts, monsters, and fairies. Older children and
also some adults may believe in magic and
superstition.
Religious Worldview: For most people, relgion is
the

foundation

of

all

worldview.

Religious

worldview differs from person to person as it is

based on a persons views about religion, the
Universe and Almighty God, who is the cosmic
supreme.
