Collegium Singers and Baroque Orchestra
Personally this was my favorite concert of the season. Baroque orchestras are always incredibly entertaining to watch and listen to. The programming was well thought out and any concert that has three separate composers all named Johann has the potential for cosmic greatness. The first piece was lively and expertly performed. The string players exhibited awesome intensity and concentration throughout the piece while maintaining a fun almost dance like interpretation. The instrumentation on the second piece was interesting. The blend of brass and voice is always a fun choice like in our performance of Alleluia. The third piece Christus mixed a lively string section and excellent performances from vocal soloists. The rhythms and moments of silence well well conducted and I thought the strings interacted well with the vocalists. The Tunder piece was, after the Bach pieces my favorite of the concert. I had never head of the composer and was pleasantly surprised by the piece. The material almost seemed romantic so was surprised to read his piece was pre-Bach. All of the soloists were amazing and charismatic. I was unfamiliar with the first Bach piece and was incredibly entertained. The instrumentation was colorful and I thought all of the performers executed their parts with precision. I am always excited to hear performances of the Brandenburg Concerto and what the piece lacked in vocalists it made up for with the harpsichord. Overall the concert was a fun display of baroque music and I was pleased to hear pieces by some unknown composers sung with period appropriate instruments.
