Graphing Dilations

The document describes dilating points on a graph using different scale factors. In the first example, points A-E were dilated by a scale factor of 2 to generate points A'-E'. In the second example, points A-H representing a cube were dilated by successive scale factors of 1/2 to generate smaller similar cubes A'-H', A''-H''. The cubes decreased in size but maintained their shape at the same location on the graph.

Dilation ~ King Tut

Put the origin in the center.

Plot and label these points:
A=(1, 5) B=(7, -2) C=(4, -3) D=(-4, -3) E=(-1, -2)
Make solid lines AB, AC, BC, CD, and AD
Make dashed lines AE, DE, and EB
Dilate each coordinate of A, B, C, D, and E by a scale
factor of 2 to get new points A, B, C, D and E.
Remember (x, y)=(2x, 2y)
Rewrite as points:
A=( , ) B=( , ) C=( , ) D=( , ) E=( , )
Plot and label A, B, C, D and E on the same graph in a
different color.
Make solid lines AB, AC, BC, CD, and AD
Make dashed lines AE, DE, and EB
