old Detroit circa the late 20th century. Nash believed this proved that Captain
Century is destined to travel to the past.
As the hero contemplated what Nash was suggesting, the two were attacked
by several DEMON morbanes, who had tracked them to the museum. Fearing
the havoc the evil sorcerers could wreck on the timeline should they acquire
the Dimensional Key, Nash used the control rod to activate the artifact, and
transported Captain Century back to the late 20 th century so that he could
attempt to stop DEMON from existing in the present. As the Keys temporal
energy manifested around Captain Century, a stray magical bolt from a
morbanes spell collided with the surging field, resulting in a massive
explosion that destroyed the artifact, as well as Nash and the morbanes.
Captain Century survived the journey through time, and arrived in Detroit in
June of 1990. Now trapped in the past with no way home to his own time,
Captain Century focuses on his mission to ensure Dr. Destroyers plan to
annihilate DEMON succeeds. However, Epoch, the chrono-computer given to
him by Nash, was badly damaged during transit and can only provide the
Captain sporadic and limited information on this distant time period.
Attempting to blend in with the locals, Captain Century uses the remaining
power of his minifac (short for miniature factory, a common device used in
the 31st century) to create all the necessary documents to procure a life for
his alter ego Buck Century in present day Detroit City. He has even taken a
job as a professor of modern history at Wayne State University.
And although tempted to patrol the city streets alongside the heroes that
inspired him to begin his crimefighting career, Buck abstains from doing so,
as Epochs historical records indicate Captain Century did (does?) not make
his first appearance until the Fall of 1990. So now he waits patiently as the
days, hours, and seconds tick slowly by, waiting for the time when Captain
Centurys return finally comes to pass.
Epoch: The chrono-computer provided by Russell Nash once held all known
recorded historical events of the late 20th to early 21st century in its memory
banks, but much of this data has been erased due to damage sustained from
temporal energy fluxes during Captain Centurys trip back through time. The
devices chronometer is aware of the actual historical date and time it exists
in, but damaged sustained to its operating program will not allow the
computer to access its remaining historical data more than a few days or
even hours into the future of these points in time. In most cases, Captain
Century will have to make inquiries of Epoch (either vocally or by using the
touch keypad) on the events in question, to which the chrono-computer may
or may not provide known data on the event. Epoch may also provide
possible percentage chances of multiple outcomes based on random
variables to events that are not directly historically documented, but which
might be able to be extrapolated from other information in its database. This
information is transmitted via the devices screen display in the English
language.
Epoch can be knocked offline by suffering EMP, electrical, or similar type
attacks. The chrono-computer will usually reboot after a brief period of time.
The protective casing on the device can sustain heavy damage, but it is by no
means impervious to massive amounts of damage.
In essence, Epoch is a plot device for Captain Century. It exists solely so the
GM may provide clues and hints about upcoming events, and may be used by
the player to gather minimum information on certain people, places, and
events of historical significance, most of which pertain to the superhuman
world. It should not be used by the player to replace Knowledge skills, or
other useful functions of a computer. If those abilities are desired, they should
be purchased for the device (as an OAF) per the standard game rules.
