H exadecimal values are a mix of alpha and numeric characters and always begin with
'0x'. The 2 and 3 keys allow you to enter A through F; otherwise, hexadecimal entry
is the same as numeric entry. To enter separators for numeric display (decimal points,
commas etc.), the SELECT Up and SELECT Down buttons display the next characters
as shown in Appendix B - Elite Series Fonts on page 92. For example, this allows
you to select superscript decimal points or commas if checkbook digits are used. Use
the CURSO R Left and CURSO R Right buttons to correct mistakes.
When a small red T appears next to a command, you cannot change the value, as the
command value is set from a theme file. A theme is a collection of settings used to
automatically set up a display to match the requirements of a site. The theme is added to
the display as part of a download. See Configuring Download on page 37 for more

Preceding label (such as Midi, Maxi, or Mega) that you can use to indicate which
jackpot pool is being displayed
Pre-Text for the number, which is usually the currency symbol and defaults to $
Post-Text for the number, which by default is blank but is available as a currency
symbol such as cents or other text such as points if the jackpot pool is not a
financial value
You can display each of these elements using a different color or effect. For example, in a
standard odometer display, you can display the dollar symbol, the thousands separator, the
decimal point, and the numbers of the odometer in different colors. H owever, for aesthetic
reasons, apart from the label, there is only one background color or background effect for the
entire odometer.
Distinct Sets of Numerical Digits
The fonts used to show text in the display have three distinct sets of numerical digits:
Standard digits are designed for use in normal text, with room below the character
for descenders, such as on a y
Characters that do not allow for descenders, which are particularly useful in
displaying pool values as they use more of the display area for the number
Small or checkbook numbers, which are raised numbers and may be used to display
cents of a pool value
Which set of digits you use depends on the O dometer Font Style setting.
Odometer Transition Effects
The odometers can transition between values in different ways. In the default method, digits
scroll up, asin a traditional mechanical odometer. Alternately, the digitscan flip horizontally
or vertically between the current value and the next value, or they may zoom where the
20

current digit shrinks to nothing and then the next digit zooms out to its new value. Use the
O dometer Style menu to set these options.
There are also two different methods of setting the speed of transitioning between values.
The default method works in the same way as a traditional odometer. When any digit rolls
over from 9 to 0, the digit to its left increments one digit and all digits move at the same
speed. For most jackpot pools, this works well. But if the jackpot pool is incrementing at such
a high rate that it is impossible to see the low value digits moving, then the high value digits
appear simply to flick from one digit to the next with no apparent scrolling.
The display offers a multi-digit odometer option to handle this scenario. In this mode, the
digits to the right scroll at slower speeds than the lower value digits so that some digits can be
seen to scroll. For example, if the pool increments at an average of $1.00 per second, then the
cents need to update at 100 digits per second, which is beyond what a human can see.
H owever, in multi-digit odometering mode, the dollarsdigit rotatesat 1 digit per second. The
digits to the left of the dollars digit scroll at the same rate as the dollars digit. The cents are
displayed with motion blurred characters to enhance the perception of speed of these digits.
If desired, you can turn motion blur off.

Waypoints Method
The figure below illustrates the use of waypoints to vary the speed of the odometering
Jackpot Value as it approaches its target value.
The waypoints on the left side represent the amount of lag. The speeds on the right side
represent the odometer rate in digits per second. These speeds can be set from 0.01 digits/
second to 40000 digits/ second in 0.01 digit/ second steps. This speed is independent of
the size of the font or display.
If the lag of a Jackpot Pool is less than or equal to the value defined for a waypoint, the
odometer moves at the speed corresponding to that waypoint.
Example 1: Waypoint 0 is set to $20 and Speed 0 is set to 0.50. The target value of this
particular Jackpot Level is$150, and the value currently displayed is$140. Thismeansthat the
Lag is $10. As the lag is greater than 0 (zero), but less than or equal to Waypoint 0, the
Jackpot Value on display will odometer at 0.5 digits per second.
Example 2: Waypoint 0 is set to $20 and Speed 0 is set to 0.50. Waypoint 1 is set to $40 and
Speed 0 is set to 1.00. The target value of this particular Jackpot Level is $450, and the value
currently displayed is $410. This means that the Lag is $40. As the Lag is greater than
Waypoint 0, but less than or equal to Waypoint 1, the Jackpot Value on display will odometer
at 1.00 digits per second.
Example 3: Waypoint 4 is set to $100 and Speed 4 is set to 5.00. Max Speed is set to 10.00.
The target value of this particular Jackpot Level is $2000, and the value currently displayed is
$1800. This means that the Lag is $200. As the Lag is greater than Waypoint 4, the display will
change at the Max Speed of 10.00 digits per second.

Configuring Download
The Elite Series displays have download functionality that allows you to obtain new
graphic animations or upgrade to the latest software version. Elite Series displays can
directly control a modem as standard. The modem allows the display to communicate
with a download server and retrieve the latest software and graphics for your display.
Before attempting a download, contact your supplier; this enables them to prepare and
test the download of the requested software. Provide your supplier with both the serial
number and storage capacity of the display. You can access this information in the
Display Information menu. The following example describes a typical download
session.
Example
Mark, a club manager, wants to download a set of animations to suit a new promotion
in his gaming room. H e contacts his supplier and informs them he wants two
animations added to the display. O nce Mark confirms the server has been updated with
his latest graphics, he may begin the download process by performing the following
steps:
1. Power on the Elite Series display. The company logo fades in and out.
2. Press EN TER. The Main Configuration menu appears.
3. Press ITEM D own until Download appears.
4. Press EN TER to display Download Status.
5. Press OPT to begin the download process.
At this time, Mark, may exit from the menu system, and the download will continue to
run.
If Mark remained at the download status in the menu, he would see the display send
commands to the modem to dial the Download Server. O nce successfully connected,
the transfer starts and the download progress bar increases from 0 to 100 percent as the
updates are received. After reaching 100%, the modem disconnects and the display
begins to program the onboard memory. During programming, the display continues
to work normally should Mark decide to exit the menu system at this stage. O nce the
program status bar reaches 100%, the display shows Task Finished and wait for
Mark to exit the menu system before resetting. The display automatically resets itself if
the user is not in menu system when the programming is completed.

Configuring Passwords
The menu system limits access to certain menu items depending on whether either or
both of the User and Setup password fields are set. All menus and items are accessible
and able to be modified if no passwords have been set.
If set, a Setup password restricts access to the menu system so that you can alter only
the display s visual features without using the setup password (Supervisor mode). The
Authorization column in the tables in Chapter 5 - Detailed Menu Descriptions
describes which particular items require the Setup (Supervisor) password for
modification.
The User password is designed for use in conjunction with the Setup password. If a
User password is set, then no one can access the menus without entering a password.
Entering the User password allows access to only the visual features of the display.
Entering the Setup password allows Supervisor access.
If a User password is set but the Setup password is not set, the display still allows open
access because entering the menu without a password is then the same as accessing at
Setup level.
Example
Penny, an operator of a jackpot system, wants to provide two levels of access to the
menu system: a higher level of access to the menu system, whereby she can set up the
Jackpot levels and protocols and a lower level of access, whereby club employees can
only modify the visual effects. Penny needs to set a Setup password made known only
to her.
Example
Penny wants to restrict access of the display to herself and the club manager, Mark.
Penny wants to restrict Mark s access to that of the visual features of the display.
Penny should set a Setup password for herself and a User password made known only
to Mark. Access to the system is now restricted to Penny and Mark.

if the value for this Jackpot Level falls more than 20 behind, it will Catch
Up .
24. Scroll to the Lag Catchup: prompt, and change the value to 5. This means
that if the value for this Jackpot Level falls behind by more than the value
defined for Max Lag: , it will Catch Up to be the Lag Catchup value
behind. For this reason, Lag Catchup: should always be less than Max
Lag: .
25. Scroll to the Waypoint 0 prompt, and change the value to 10. If the lag for
this Jackpot Level is less than or equal to this value, the Jackpot will cycle at the
speed defined for Speed 0: , which is the next prompt.
26. Scroll to the Speed 0 prompt, and change the value to 20. All Speed values
are measured in Cycles Per 100 Seconds. A Cycle is defined as the time taken
for a digit to be incremented by one. Thus, a Speed of 20 in this case, should be
thought of as 0.20 Cycles Per Second.
27. Repeat the above two steps for the remaining Waypoints and Speeds in the
menu, but increment the values slightly each time. This will give the Jackpot
value the appearance of slowing down as it approaches its target value.

You can use the remote control to modify the volume and balance settings of the display. Use CURSO R Left to move the slider to the
left (decreasing the volume or moving the balance to the left) and use CURSO R Right to move the slider to the right (increasing the
volume or moving the balance to the right). You can also press the numbers on the remote to set specific volume levels.
In stereo mode, the Cursor button allows you to toggle between adjusting the volume or balance sliders. Press O PT to play a sample
sound with the current audio settings. Pressing O PT while the audio is playing immediately stops the sound.
The Jackpot H it and Attract volumes are calculated based on a percentage of the Master volume. Therefore, if you want the entire
display to be louder, increase the master volume settings. Conversely, if you want to make only the jackpot animationslouder, adjust the
Jackpot H it volume to be louder than that of the Attract volume.

The Bally DIU GASS Protocol is a point-to-point protocol. Each message from the DIU must be acknowledged so that the DIU
can be sure that each message is received correctly. H owever, the display has an option to not respond to Bally DIU messages.
This allows operation of the displays in a multi-drop configuration by having only the last display on line respond. This
configuration is not ideal as there is no confirmation that messages have been received except from the final display.

The peripheral control port is designed to interface the display to exterior signage. Two
relays are provided as a means of stimulating external sound or light systems. When the
display is not in a jackpot hit sequence, the relays rest in the normally closed position.
Upon a jackpot hit, the relays can be configured to turn on external media. in this case,
one or both relays will switch across to the normally open position. The relays can be

App A - Auto-Diagnostics
Appendix A - Auto-Diagnostics
N ormally when the Elite Series displays are shipped, they are in auto-diagnostic mode. In this
mode, the display cycles through a sequence of display tests. The tests cover all aspects of
operation of the LED array.
The display performs the following auto-diagnostic tests:
1. Display the version, serial number, and boot count.
2. Test the RO M and RAM.
3. Test the RS232 and RS485 ports (Loop-back plugs must be fitted to pass the tests).

You can also create and download fonts into the display. If you want to replace a standard
font, download the new font with the same name as the font you want to replace.
PNG Images
Standard Elite Series fonts are PN G images, where any non-black pixel is part of a character.
To save space, the fonts can be indexed RGB, one bit per pixel PN G images (Black and
White)or, alternatively, they can be grey scale PN G images. These black and white fontsmust
be named Fontexx.png where xx is a unique font number. These fonts support any of
the effects the display supports.
The display also supports full RGBPN G fonts with alpha (transparency). Such fonts must be
named Fontcxx.png where xx isa unique font number. These fontsare not used unlessa
theme file is created to specify their usage. Foreground effects are not applied to these fonts
and background effects will only be seen if the font has some transparency. H owever, these
fonts do support the full color range of the display and can be drawn with shading, outlining,
gradients, and so forth.
The images are arranged as a grid of 16x16 characters. The width and height of the font
defines a character cell. For example, a complete font image that is 256x512 pixels is a font of

16 pixels wide (16x16 = 256) and 32 pixels tall (16x32 = 512). The layout is ascending from left to right, and then down. A font PN G

Reset Shading
This chapter describes how to perform adjustments for the values listed in the first four
bullets above; Reset Shading resets each of the other values to its original factory-shipped
state.
PGIC suggests performing overall block balancing in the order of the bullets
listed above.
The table on the following page describes remote control key functions used to perform
block balancing. You can use the table as a reference when performing each of the
procedures on the pages following the table.

Adjusting Overscan
The LEDs in the display are actively controlled on both sides of each LED. Due to the nature
of the control system, it is possible to overdrive these signals. Adjusting overscan allows
setting up the display so that maximum intensity is achieved without overdriving. If the
display is overdriven, LEDs can glow faintly when a nearby LED is fully on. If overdriven,
the LED at the bottom of an LED block will glow faintly, when the LED at the top of the
block is on or vice-versa. O verscan is overdriving one side of the LED, underscan is
overdriving the other side.
To adjust overscan:
1. Power on the Elite Series display.
2. Press EN TER. The Main Configuration menu appears.
3. Press EN TER. The Serial N o. menu item (of the Display Information menu)
appears.
4. Press ITEM D own until Block Balancing appears.
5. Press SELECT Up/ D own to change the value to O verscan.
6. Press EN TER. A diagonal line moves across the screen from left to right.
7. Press 9 to set underscan to maximum.
8. Press MOD E to select O verscan.
9. Press 0 to set overscan to the minimum value. Any glow should be just above the
diagonal line. For the pixel at the top of a block, any glow should be at the bottom
pixel of that column. The underscan is often easiest to perceive on this pixel as it is
isolated from the brighter diagonal line pixels.
10. Press MOD E to select Underscan.
11. Reduce the underscan in coarse steps (press 8,7,6 etc) until any faint glow on LEDs
other than the diagonal line disappears.
12. Increase the underscan to the next highest coarse step. For example, if underscan is
set to 7, then press 8.
13. Press SELECT D own (repeatedly) to reduce the underscan until any faint glow
disappears.
There are 23 fine steps between each coarse step, so this step may requ
many presses of the SELECT Down button.

Editing an item will affect that item and all of the items to its right. Therefore,
adjustment must be performed from left to right.
If the appropriate default shading has been selected then the display is likely to
already be close to the desired shading. If not, then return to the Block Balancing
menu, select Reset Shading, and then select the appropriate default shading scheme.
the tint of the column indicates the adjustment necessary. If the column shows a red
tint, reduce the red. If the column shows a green tint, increase the red and blue. A
blue tint should be corrected by reducing blue. A purple (magenta) tint is corrected
by reducing red and blue. An aqua (cyan)tint is corrected by adding red. A yellow tint
is corrected by adding blue.
