Definitions:
Circle: is the set of all points in a plane that lie a fixed distance from a fixed point. The fixed
distance is called the radius and the fixed point is called the center of the circle.
Important Properties:
Equation of a circle: An equation of the circle with center (h, k) and radius r is given by
(x h)2 + (y k)2 = r2 .
This is called the standard form for a circle.
Note to find the equation of a circle you need two items: the center and the radius.
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
In the equation of a circle, make sure that you subtract the xcoordinate and the ycoordinate of
the center.
In the equation of a circle, do not forget to square the radius.
PROBLEMS
1. Given the following circle equations,
determine the center and radius.
(a) (x 3)2 + (y 5)2 = 16
r2 = 10
r2 = 10
r = 10
r2 = 16
r2 = 16
r=4
(b) (x + 6)2 + y 2 = 10
r=
10
(x h)2 + (y k)2 = r2
(x (2))2 + (y 3)2 = 22
(x + 2)2 + (y 3)2 = 4
(x + 2)2 + (y 3)2 = 4
(x h)2 + (y k)2 = r2

(x 5) + (y (2)) =

p
(x1 x2 )2 + (y1 y2 )2
p
= (7 4)2 + (3 (1))2
p
= (11)2 + (4)2
= 121 + 16
= 137
r=
(x h)2 + (y k)2 = r2
(x (7))2 + (y 3)2 =
2
137
(x 5)2 + (y + 2)2 = 7
(x 5)2 + (y + 2)2 = 7
x1 + x2 y1 + y2

= (3, 5)

= 20.
r=
Finally,
substituting (h, k) = (2, 4) and
r = 20 into the equation for a circle, we
get
(x h)2 + (y k)2 = r2
(x 2)2 + (y (4))2 =
2
20
(x 2)2 + (y + 4)2 = 20
(x 2)2 + (y + 4)2 = 20
Next, to find the radius we will use the distance formula on the center (h, k) = (3, 5)
and either one of the given points. We will
use (7, 9).
p
(x1 x2 )2 + (y1 y2 )2
p
= (3 7)2 + (5 9)2
p
= (4)2 + (4)2
= 16 + 16
= 32.
r=
Finally, since
we know that (h, k) = (3, 5)
(x h)2 + (y k)2 = r2
(x 3)2 + (y 5)2 =
2
32
(x 3)2 + (y 5)2 = 32
(x 3)2 + (y 5)2 = 32
