Widespread flooding inundated Jakarta, Indonesia from heavy rains over several days. Nearly 6,000 people were evacuated and transportation such as buses and trains were disrupted as flood waters reached heights of 60 cm in some areas. Public works projects are planned along the Ciliwung River to help mitigate future floods, including a tunnel to split water flows and expanding the river's capacity, with the goal of making Jakarta flood free by 2018 once these projects are complete.

JAKARTA FLOOD

Widespread flooding inundated Jakarta, Indonesia, Flooding quickly ensued Sunday night
through Monday night in Jakarta as persistent rain and thunderstorms unleashed 300 to 450 mm
(12 to 18 inches) of rainfall. On Tuesday, nearly 6,000 people were evacuated from parts of
Jakarta. Runoff from the rain flooded dozens of roads and severely affected public transportation.
The TransJakarta busway was forced to halt operations on half of its corridors Monday morning,
while train services were disrupted. Flood waters reached up to 60 cm around the Presidential
Palace and the National Monument and brought a rapid rise on the Ciliwung River.
Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono has said that Jakarta will
be flood free by 2018, particularly if flood mitigation projects along the Ciliwung River finish on
schedule. The projects include the construction of the Ciliwung tunnel connecting West Flood
Canal (BKB) and East Flood Canal (BKT) that will split water flowing from the Ciliwung River
as well as the expansion of the capacity of the Ciliwung River, the longest river in the capital.
Once the process of the Ciliwung River normalization and the construction of the
Ciliwung tunnel are finished, the floods will recede, said Basuki on Tuesday.
