    Grade 3 English Lesson- Composition

    LESSON FOCUS:
    Practice composition writing, paragraph and sentence structure

    YEAR/LENGTH:
    Year 3
    60 minutes

    ACHIEVEMENT STANDARD:
    Understand that paragraphs are a key organisational feature of written texts (ACELA1479)
    Plan, draft and publish imaginative, informative and persuasive texts demonstrating increasing control over text structures
    and language features and selecting print,and multimodal elements appropriate to the audience and purpose (ACELY1682)
    Write using joined letters that are clearly formed and consistent in size (ACELY1684)
    ASSESSMENT/EVIDENCE OF LEARNING:
    -Children should be able to successfully write 3 paragraphs which are correctly structured and make sense when read. These
    paragraphs should clearly explain the focus of the story (why they like the rain)
    PART & TIMING
    Introduction
    (15 minutes)

    LEARNING AND TEACHING ACTIVITIES


    -Inroduce the activity by asking children why they like the rain (chosen as it is
    monsoon season & often raining)
    -Write the most relevent answers on the board, aim for 6-12
    -Once this is complete children are to get workbooks out, explain that they will
    be writing a composition
    -The basic concepts they need to use are paragraphs and sentence structure.

    RESOURCES/EQUIPMENT
    Blackboard
    Chalk
    Workbooks
    Pencils

    Body
    (40 minutes)

    -Children should work independently on their compositions, minimum 3


    paragraphs required, ensuring that there is 2 lines between each paragraph.
    -The paragraphs should utilise the points discussed with the class and written
    on the board.
    -The main focus should be on ensuring that the paragraphs are well written,

    Blackboard
    Chalk
    Workbooks
    Pencils

    structured and make sense


    -Early finishers can draw a picture of why they like the rain

    Conclusion
    (5 minutes)

    -Pack up warning 5 minutes before finish


    -Books away ready for the bell
    -Any children that have not finished the activiy will need to take it home to
    finish for homework.
    -All books will be marked

    Lesson evaluation:
    -Are the children able to work well independently?
    -Have the children understood the aim of the task?
    -Were the children able to contribute ideas to the class discussion?
    -Did they develop an understanding of composition writing?
