Design Report: The students explain their constructive solutions to a jury of experts from
the automotive and motorsport industries in report and discussion. The concept of the
design is to evaluate the engineering effort that went into the design of the car and how
the engineering meets the intent of the market. The car that illustrates the best use of
engineering to meet the design goals and the best understanding of the design by the team
members will win the design event.
Cost Report: The students are to assume that a serial production of 1000 cars a year will
follow the prototype. The cost calculation is discussed with a jury based on a report. The
objective of the event is for the participants to learn and understand the manufacturing
techniques and processes of some of the components that they have chosen to purchase
rather than fabricate themselves.
Presentation: The objective is to evaluate the teams ability to develop and deliver a
comprehensive business case that will convince the executives of a fake manufacturing firm
that the teams design best meets the demands of the amateur weekend competition market
and that it can be profitably manufactured and marketed.

The philosophy of the 2015 Texas A&M Racing team has been to design a
drivers car. If the drivers can maximize their seat time in a comfortable cockpit,
then they can perform at their best. A drivers car requires a balance between
the engineers ideal vehicle and driver ergonomics. In order to design around
this philosophy, priority was given to: (1) safety, (2) reliability, (3) performance, (4)
maintainability, (5) adaptability, and (6) practicality.
We would like to thank our families and sponsors for supporting us throughout
this racing season. None of this would have been possible without you!
These goals were established early to provide team members with sufficient
time to successfully research, design, analyze, manufacture, and test all vehicle
components. Key areas include performance and efficiency, reliability, weight
reduction, driver ergonomics, manufacturing, and testing. An all new monocoque
chassis featuring a new suspension and aerodynamic setup driven by a powerful
engine package are the results of the 2015 teams determination for a successful
competition season.

Spartan Racing
Spartan Racing is proud to introduce SR-7, our seventh Formula SAE vehicle.
Weve returned to compete this year with more motivation, more speed, and
bright car. SR-7 is an evolution of the lightening-fast SR-6, including electropneumatic paddle shifters, a powerful and reliable Honda F4i engine, and a full aerodynamic package. While focusing upon a strong finish we have also addressed reliability concerns that we had with SR-6 in addition to better understanding proven
systems . SR-7 sets a new bar for us at Spartan Racing, and we are excited to
share it with all of our friends here at FSAE Michigan 2015.
Michigan State Universitys Formula SAE Team would like to present this years
car, the SR-15. The SR-15 utilizes a hybrid front monocoque and rear space
frame chassis to provide packaging, cooling, and accessibility advantages. A Honda CBR600RR engine is incorporated to provide reliability and quick acceleration
with a 0-60 time of only 3.4 seconds. Aerodynamic devices such as a front wing,
rear wing, and undertray were designed to generate 330 pounds of downforce at
60 mph, significantly improving handling capabilities. Michigan States newest vehicle also possesses a fully tunable suspension system that was designed around
the 18 Hoosier tire. Over 60 sensors are integrated to monitor vehicle and driver
performance. Additional features include electro-pneumatic paddle shifting, traction control, and launch control to create a simple human-machine interface.
We thank Michigan State University and all of our sponsors, friends, and families
for their contributions and support towards this invaluable learning experience.

UC Berkeleys newest car B15 maintains the design philosophy of keeping the car
small and light. Adding onto that, the team decided early on to increase performance by adding an aerodynamics package comprised of a front and rear wing to
the car. Both wings have adjustable angles of attack so that we may tune our new
aerodynamics package as we learn more through testing.
The 2015 MRacing team designed a car with weight savings in mind. Emphasis
was also placed on aerodynamics. All we can say is, Much wings, such wow!
Due to the increased downforce on the car we chose to switch from a spool to a
limited slip differential. We chose a Drexler LSD due to its adjustability and light
weight of 4.8 lbs. We adapted the 4340 steel tripod housings designed for the
Drexler to continue using our spring steel flex disc CV joints, saving 5 lbs over the
OTS tripod, tulip, and steel axle configuration.
We use a Swissauto 250 go-kart engine due to its low weight, high stock output,
and low fuel consumption. The torque peak was moved towards the clutch engagement zone for better launches and max torque was increased to 23 ft-lbs.
B15s suspension was redesigned using our CnAy model and points sensitivities
from our lap simulator. Additionally, the suspension team designed around our
aerodynamics package, carbon fiber axles, and flex discs.

Arizona State Universitys 2015 entry into the Formula SAE Lincoln competition
is the culmination of the hard work of over 50 engineering students during the
period of two years. The goal for our team was to design a space frame, fourcylinder engine formula car with a focus on simplistic design as well as handling
performance while taking advantage of the manufacturing facilities available to
us. Though lightweight characteristics were sought after in our designs, stiffness
took priority in suspension, chassis, and braking system components.
In addition, our team has recently undergone massive restructuring. When we
started this build two years ago, our team consisted of a handful of dedicated
members who have helped build this team and club into what it is now, a structured organization with the goals of exposing students to engineering. We are all
very proud of this car and the work our organization has done in the past years,
and have learned many design concepts, management processes, and racing
dynamics, which we will continue to improve on with future generations.

University of Saskatchewan
Huskie Motorsports
This year, Huskie Motorsports has focused its vehicle design upon two simple
concepts, safety and reliability. Certain aspects of past cars have been poorly
designed, or proven unreliable through testing and time, and the teams eleventh
car seeks to address these issues.
Something often overlooked in student design competitions is driver safety, and
to address this issue, Huskie Motorsports has put a large focus upon driver safety
this year. Safety features include a high quality 6-point Schroth racing harness,
ceramic header coating, and firewall insulation above and beyond rule requirements.
Reliability of FSAE vehicles is also often an issue, and has caused the team to accept certain small reductions in performance if it means the vehicle will be more
likely to complete endurance. You cant win if you dont finish.
With these two ideologies in mind, Huskie Motorsports hopes to achieve their best
result since the teams creation in 2000, aiming for a top twenty finish.

The University of North Texas Mean Green Racing Car #14 is only the third FSAE
car to be manufactured from UNT. With only two years of experience under our
belts, Mean Green Racing has done some significant growth within the team as
well as expanded our capabilities on the technology side of the car.
For the first time, UNT will be racing with a pneumatic paddle shifting system
along with an electronic system integrated with the ECU to control shifting and
Electronic Throttle Control. The powertrain received a few upgrades such as
an improved flow exhaust and an all carbon intake plenum and restrictor. The
suspension was also improved heavily in the front end with a lighter live spindle
design compared to previous dead spindle setups.

Formula UBC
For 2015, Formula UBC focused on improving reliability while staying weight
neutral. Major improvements were made to the balance of the car, driver comfort
and our data acquisition systems. Notable features on this years car include a 3D

Cyclone Racing
CR-20 is Iowa State Universitys 20th car to compete in the Formula SAE series.
For CR-20, emphasis was placed on the continued improvement of all systems from the previous generations. Reducing the number and complexity of
components to decrease manufacturing time, improved reliability, and refinement
of the engine system was also strongly emphasized. To increase manufacturing simplicity, all 2D parts were water jet or laser cut. This years car continues
on 10 wheels and features unique a-arms that are machined from aluminum
plates. The powertrain remains largely the same as last year as we continue to
use the Yamaha YFZ450R engine. Our intake/restrictor is 3D printed in Stratasyss
proprietary high strength material, ULTEM 9085.The pedal mounts have 5 of
adjustability to accommodate a range of driver heights. The use of aircraft fabric
bodywork eliminated the need for composites molds and saved time, money and
weight.

Concordia University
The CFR15 race car is the 6th vehicle produced by the modern era of Concordia
Formula Racing. This vehicle was designed as an iteration of the CFR14 vehicle
which competed at FSAE Michigan last summer. The primary design goals for
CFR15 were to improve on reliability, increase torque in the lower rpm range
and implement a full aerodynamic package with an active rear wing. In order
to provide a driveable torque curve, intake and exhaust runners were tuned,
camshaft timing was optimized, and fuel map was optimized using an engine
dyno as well as on track testing. The focus of the aerodynamic package was to
produce maximal aerodynamic downforce with minimal drag and minimal added
weight. Extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis was performed in
order to optimize the design. The rear wings main element flap is activated by
a pneumatic cylinder to change its angle of attack and reduce drag on straight
portions of the track. The wing is activated via an Arduino depending on the cars
current conditions, steering, throttle, etc. Tire data was analysed and used to create a simulation model to better determine suspension setups and increase the
performance of the vehicle.
The goal for the 2015 Long Beach Racing vehicle was to improve on all the lessons learned from the previous vehicle. As a relatively young team, we wanted to
create a reliable entry-level vehicle that was easy to drive and maintain. Reducing
weight for the 2015 vehicle was one of our biggest concerns along with making
the vehicle handle better. We decided to stick with the CBR600 engine since we
have had success with it over the last couple of years and know it is reliable and
requires low maintenance.

The UCI 2015 racecar team is competing in the 2015 FSAE competition hosted
in Lincoln, Nebraska. Because the team competed in last years FSAE Electric
competition, constructing an internal combustion car is new for the current team
members. A design, with inspiration drawn from past cars, was made that was
feasible with the given constraints and the teams limitations. The goals for this
design was to create a car that had a feasible manufacturing method, an even
weight distribution, and as low of a cost as possible while still remaining competitive.

Titan Racing
This year Titan Racing Team will be continuing its development of a carbon fiber
monocoque and rear carbon sub-frame box. Reducing mass through further
analyis and testing has been on of the teams high priorities. As a third year carbon monocoque team, Titan Racing built a chassis dyno to test and further design
a lighter and more rigid chassis. The Major changes to this years vehicle include
a drexler differential, and the addition of an aerodynamic package. A two element
front and rear wing will be providing the car with down-force.
30
29
The 2015 CSUN car features numerous improvements from previous years
designs. In the preliminary design phase, a design matrix that featured 10 independent design criteria, along with high-level simulation, were utilized to make
decisions. The major decisions made were to minimize weight, reach a power
goal of 50HP, and implement the first aerodynamic package at CSUN. A strict
design and manufacturing timeline allowed for additional testing and validation of
our designs.
Refining the design of existing components on the 2014 vehicle allowed a further
reduction in mass, which helped to offset the mass of the aero package. The
design of the aero package was driven by reaching downforce targets, minimizing
drag, and minimizing mass. These factors facilitate increased performance of the
vehicle.
Other major design changes include: a Quaife torque-biasing differential, a decoupled front roll hoop and front suspension box, a further reclined driver position,
lowered front and main roll hoops, and a push rod suspension front and rear.
Formula SAE prepares us for the real world, and we are eager to meet the new
generation of engineers who will be working with us in the future!

Last year we focused on the reliability of our car. Between improvements on powertrain and the introduction of aerodynamic structures to the vehicle we produced
the car that took us furthest in competition in our history.
This year, once again our focus was on reliability. USC Racing made adjustments
to the aspects of our car that contributed to our shortcomings last year. We tuned
our powertrain via an engine dyno, and made adjustments to its powertrain to
ensure its reliability during competition. Additionally we made improvements to
our aerodynamic setup switching the sizing of our front and rear elements from 2
and 2 to 2 and 3 respectively - we improved downforce to drag relationships with
the adjustment.

Oregon Tech Racing raises the bar again with its most advanced vehicle concept
to date: fully floating low drag aerodyamic package, force induction to improve
mid-range power efficiency, sophisticated student developed electronics, an
increased focus on vehicle reliability, and several very innovative, secret technologies distinguish our 2015 car from previous years. All this while retaining proven
design concepts like our competitively light steel space frame chassis and
mechanical paddle shifters allowing our team to focus on other aspects of the car
that need development. This has resulted in a new dry sump oiling system, complete cooling system redesign, new student designed carbon fiber steering rack,
carbon fiber wheel development work, brake system redesign, and increased
focus on driver ergonomics.
We would like to thank our sponsors and those who have supported us along the
2014-2015 journey. Without them, we would not be able to accomplish our goals.

The UM-426 was thought to be a lightweight car designed for each event of the
competition. The car was based up on previous designs taking successful aspects
of previous cars. Thinking on drivers ergonomics was very important in our design
process. A lot of test driving data and optimization of every component for maximum performance were the keys to achieve our goals.
We would like to thank all our sponsors, university, family and friends. The dream
came true.

The 2015 University of Colorado Denver Motorsports FSAE Team is entirely new to
Formula SAE. As a first iteration, this vehicle has been designed from the ground
up. The main goal for the team this year has been to complete all dynamic events
by constructing a reliable and durable vehicle.
The vehicle is powered by a GSX-R600 engine surrounded by a 4130 chromoly
space frame. The engine management system, PE3, encompasses custom fuel
mapping and can provide test data collection. The intake manifold is constructed
from carbon fiber and the exhaust is designed with equal length headers routed
to a 4 into 1 collector. The chain driven powertrain will utilize a Drexler LSD with
a final drive ratio of 4. The suspension uses a short-long arm push-rod suspension that connect to 10 inch wheels. The body is composed of Kevlar reinforced
carbon fiber panels. Driver assistance consists of a HUD and pneumatic shifting
system.
The 2015 vehicle will provide a solid testing and training platform and allow for
future teams to build on the lessons learned.

For the 2015 UWashington FSAE team, an iterative approach was implemented.
After many drastic design changes in 2014, this year the team focused on fine
tuning the previous years design based on data collected from the 2014 combustion car and new analyses. This has resulted in a combustion car and electric car
with much greater reliability and more testing time compared to previous years.
Design Objectives
Design every part and assembly as a system, with overall competition points
in mind; team direction, design compromises, and decisions are made accordingly
Reduction of part and assembly weight through improved understanding of
load cases and analyses
Utilize as much old and new test data as possible to validate theoretical
models and concepts
Provide and utilize ample testing time to extract maximum vehicle performance reliability

The 2015 Syracuse University Formula SAE Team is a first year competing team
entered in the Lincoln, Nebraska SAE design challenge. Our team is formed of a
variety of engineering students and others from a multitude of backgrounds who
collectively have the drive and dedication to see our car to and through competition. The main design goal being the car must complete all dynamic events in the
Lincoln, NE competition. We almost exclusively built all components in shop due to
financial limits as well as a desire to give all members experience with machining.
The engine chosen for the 2015 competition was that from a 2006 Suzuki GSXR600 K6 sport bike The primary reasons for this selection are that the parts are
widely available and affordable. We designed our vehicle with minimal cost and
ease of manufacturing in mind. Ultimately, being a rookie team we made all our
design decisions on our own and are proud of what we were able to accomplish.

Husker Motorsports
In only its fourth year of existence the Husker Motorsports team established high
goals for 2015. One goal for the 2015 car was to make minimal changes to the
previous generation in order to focus on driver training and extensive testing and
tuning of the new car. Husker 04 is a robust car with a steel tube space frame,
a 2009 Kawasaki zx6r 600cc engine, and an all carbon fiber body. Some key
features include a data acquisition system, electronic push-button shifting, and
launch control with an automatic shift system. The major addition for this year
was the design of an aerodynamic undertray-rear diffuser. This is the first year
that Husker Motorsports decided to begin preliminary research into the benefits of
aerodynamics for the FSAE car. It was determined that the first step in developing
and aerodynamics package would be to design an aerodynamic undertray-rear
diffuser that would reduce the overall drag force on the car and also create a
small amount of downforce. Steps were also taken to improve upon some of
the designs from the previous year that proved to be less reliable. The Husker
04 has the highest potential for success of any previous car produced by Husker
Motorsports.

Our 2015 car is a design iteration of our successful 2011 car. This means a
return to our 4-cylinder roots with the CBR600RR. This power plant connects to
our Torsen II differential via chain. The differential also mounts our single rear
inboard brake. A PE3 ECU with custom mapping controls this powertrain. The car
features a push-rod actuated double unequal length A-arm suspension with front
and rear ARBs. This suspension connects to custom aluminum uprights and hubs.
Our chassis is completed by a mild steel tubular space frame. A carbon fiber front
wing, rear wing, and under-tray provide downforce, while a sidepod shrouds the
radiator. Driver equipment includes a mechanically connected shifter and clutch,
dial and digital tachometers with a shift light, and an adjustable pedal assembly.
This design gives a very strong foundation for future iterations and improvements
by our team.

Hello!
We participate from Japan.
We make a new car from a new concept with new team members every year.
Our concept of car this year is a high-speed turning machine, because we think
speed in the corners can win the race.
We made a lightweight car, and achieved high speed turning ability. 1st place at
the skid pad, and placing in the top 10 overall. Therefore, we made our frame not
steel but aluminum. As a result, we could make it 4 kg lighter than a steel frame.
The engine fuel supply apparatus was changed from a carburetor to electronic
fuel injection, to improve the engine power.
We are determined to achieve the best result possible at FSAE Lincoln.

frame and suspension design that combine enhanced ergonomics along with
a balanced chassis to improve driver confidence and drivability. Powertrain has
also been further developed, including a noteworthy transition to cleaner, highperformance ethanol fuel. Many of the components on the WF 15 have been
lightened significantly; the current drivetrain, suspension, frame and body panels
are all lighter than in previous designs. The body panels and nose cone are now
all carbon fibre, which has been designed to house the electronics and reduce
drag on the side pods. Nearly all hardware has been changed to metric to simplify

F2015 represents the tenth Formula SAE vehicle produced by USF Racing since
beginning the FSAE series in 2005, and is the fifth evolution of our current design
concept. The following goals were created by the team preceding the design
process: improvement of serviceability, further development of an aerodynamic
wing package, and an overall weight of 330 lb (to match the weight of our lightest
non-aero car, F2013). We placed an emphasis on validating design simulation
through real-world testing. Based off of the successes of previous models, F2015
runs a naturally aspirated Suzuki LT-R 450 single cylinder engine with bore and
stroke modifications, steel axles, and 10-inch wheels. Integrating last years
chassis packaging with improvements in the suspension and engine systems, the
refinement of an aerodynamics package, as well as building on a successful history in static events, we hope we have created a car which continues to perform
aggressively across all events in the FSAE competition.

power to use. The use of Hoosier tires demands that our suspension be highly
optimized to squeeze out every last bit of performance, so a premium was placed
on maintaining optimum camber angles, and reducing tire load fluctuation.

Our second entry into the Formula SAE Electric series is a complete revision of
our first vehicle with major developments in powertrain, vehicle packaging, and
suspension.
The most significant visual change is a 30 inch reduction in overall length. This
primarily is achieved by shifting the accumulator forward in the chassis and
reducing the sprocket-to sprocket distance. This distance reduction is allowed
by a newly developed coaxial, planetary speed reduction device. Power is routed
from that through a secondary chain-based reduction to the wheels with a Torsen
differential.
The goals of the new suspension are to make the car easy to drive and provide a
high level of maneuverability and stability during acceleration, braking, and hard
cornering. The suspension is also designed to interface well with the powertrain
and chassis. Another major goal was to reduce the vehicles turn radius from last
years. This year, we implemented a lower multilink to reduce the turn radius to
13.5 feet while maintaining a small scrub radius.

and finally to a three-phase, 240 Nm (peak, for 5 seconds) EMRAX 228 brushless
motor. This power plant is expected to bring the vehicle up to a maximum speed
of 130 km/h.Additional features include dedicated cores from Parallax Propeller

For the past three years Missouri S&T Formula Electric has worked on designing
and manufacturing a car to compete in the Formula Electric SAE design competition. Using their time and resources, a car was designed to minimize weight while
achieving acceleration within the traction limits. Having been established and
developed independently and with no prior affiliations to the combustion team on
campus, a vast amount of effort was placed into designing an original drivetrain
to take advantage of a fully electrical system as opposed to adopting one similar
to those used by combustion teams. This additional effort is justified, in that the
drivetrain is required to perform reliably and viewed as one of the most critical
design components. The extra years of refinements during the cars development
period will hopefully allow several parts of the design to carry through to successive cars and thus diverting future focus to redesigning systems that do not
perform satisfactorily.
