Curriculum

Module Objective
This module provides a foundational understanding of the maritime industry and establishes the basis for
all the other modules offered by BIMCO.
Module Content
1. Maritime geography and international trade. Developing your knowledge and understanding of
ships, cargoes carried by ships, the commercial use of ships.
2. An overview of the ship in maritime transport services. It also covers most merchant ship types
including constructional features and their engagement in international trade.
3. An overview of cargoes. Characteristics of different cargoes and related types of ships.
4. Understand the factors involved in investment and managements of the business of ship owning,
registering, insuring and using the ships.
5. Identify the main players and organizations involved in the maritime industry and their services in
the life of a ship.
6. A historical overview of the maritime industrys move towards greater legislative control.
Conventions, Legislation and Regulations: what these are, how they come into being and what
effect they have on ships engaged in international trade and how they are enforced.
7. Using the Ship. Understand the main charters used in chartering a ship, cover basic voyage
estimating, explain the functions of Bills of Lading, Hague Rules, Hague-Visby Rules, Hamburg Rules
and Rotterdam Rules.

Module Tutor
Captain Norman Lopez, Extra Master (Thomas Gray Medalist), Solicitor, LLB,
B.Ad.Vov.T., MA (International Studies), Grad Dip Leg Practice.
Captain Lopez is closely involved with the maritime industry for 47 years: as a seagoing officer including Master, maritime academic, author, maritime arbitrator, P&I
Correspondent and Solicitor. He presently practises as a Ship and Cargo Surveyor,
Nautical Consultant, FOSFA Superintendent and Maritime Trainer.

Module Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this module.
Teaching Methods
The module is internet based with four key elements: digital book (module learning material), case studies,
webinars and resources section.
Case Studies
This module has three case studies that the tutor teaches during the Webinar session with live interaction from
the participants. Prior to the webinar participants work in groups to develop answers for each case study.
Examination
The examination is a written and open book, which means you are allowed to consult your notes, books, the
Internet, etc. The exam paper consists of scenario-based or discussion-based, essay-style questions. Your answers
need to demonstrate that you have understood the logic and concepts behind a certain issue. Pass grade is 50%+.
