Trusses are lightweight yet strong structures used in bridges, buildings, radio towers, and space constructions. There are many types of trusses suited to different applications, including King Post, Queen Post, Pratt, and Howe trusses used in houses and buildings. Other truss types like Bowstring, Polynesian, Mono Pitch, and Dual Pitch are suited to different roof designs, while Inverted and Cambered trusses can create vaulted ceilings.

Trusses are used in a variety of applications where a lightweight, yet strong, structure is

required. Trusses are used extensively in bridges, buildings (particularly roofing and flooring),
radio and television towers, and space-based constructions. http://cortezcolorado.net/whatkind-of-trusses-to-use-for-different-roof-ceiling-shapes/
Different Types of Trusses
King Post Truss- This particular truss is made out of wood most of the time, but it can also
be built out of a combination of steel and wood. The King Post Truss spans up to 8m, which
makes it perfect for multiple types of houses, especially the smaller ones.

Queen Post Truss -The Queen Post Truss is designed to be a very reliable, simple
and versatile type of roof truss that you can use at any given time. It offers a good
span, around 10m, and it has a simple design which makes it perfect for a wide range
of establishments.
Pratt Truss -This is one of the most popular steel roof truss types and it is quite
economical. This particular type of truss offers some interesting features mainly
thanks to the fact that the vertical members provide tension, while the diagonal ones
are bringing in compression
Howe Truss -This type of truss is a combination of steel and wood, which makes it
elegant, while also offering a very appealing design. Almost everything is made out of
wood. However, the tension members or the vertical members are manufactured out
of steel in order to offer extra support and reliability. One thing that makes the Howe
Truss extraordinary is the fact that it has a very wide span, as it can cover anything
from 6-30m. This makes it versatile and very useful for a wide range of project types.
Fan Truss- the Fan Truss comes with a very simple design and its made out of steel.
In this particular situation, the trusses form a fink roof truss. On top of that, the main
characteristic here is that the top chords are split into smaller lengths, as this allows
the build to obtain purl in support.
North Light Roof Truss- the North Light Roof Truss is suitable for the larger spans
that go over 20m and get up to 30m. This happens because its cheaper to add a
truss that has a wide, larger set of lattice girders that include support trusses. This
method is one of the oldest, as well as most economical ones that you can find on the
market, as it allows you to bring in proper ventilation.

Quadrangular Roof Trusses- these are used for large spans, and this is why you
can encounter then in larger spaces, which include auditoriums or even railway sheds.
Scissor Roof Truss- a Scissor Roof Truss can particularly be found in cathedrals. It
doesnt require beams or bearing walls, however it doesnt leave that much space for
insulation which makes its energy efficiency very poor. On the other hand, the upside
here is that the ceiling gets vaulted and you receive more space in the attic.
Raised Heel Roof Truss- this is one of the most efficient types of timber roof
trusses, mostly because it brings a very good room for insulation, but at the same
time it also provides you with a very good system for structural support.
Parallel Chord Roof Truss- These are made out of wood and the best part about using
them is that they dont require any beam or bearing wall. Instead, they opt for full
pieces of wood and thus lower the amount of labor necessary for working with them.
Bowstring- Named for their shape that resembles an archery bow, Bowstring Trusses
were first used for arched truss bridges, often confused with tied-arch bridges.
Bowstring Trusses are great for spanning large distances. ( http://cortezcolorado.net/whatkind-of-trusses-to-use-for-different-roof-ceiling-shapes/)

Polynesian- A Polynesian Truss has two pitches a lower pitch on the bottom part of
the roof, and a steeper pitch on the top part of the roof. ( http://cortezcolorado.net/whatkind-of-trusses-to-use-for-different-roof-ceiling-shapes/)

Mono Pitch- Mono Pitch Trusses are usually used in shed-type roofs and lean-to roofs.
They are basically half of a normal truss. ( http://cortezcolorado.net/what-kind-of-trusses-touse-for-different-roof-ceiling-shapes/)

Dual Pitch-The Dual Pitch Truss has a different angle or slope on each side of the
truss apex. This type of truss is very commonly used, and can conform to the design
of many homes. ( http://cortezcolorado.net/what-kind-of-trusses-to-use-for-different-roof-ceilingshapes/)

Cambered- To camber means to slightly curve or bend. The word camber is typically
used in describing a type of arch, truss or beam. So, Cambered Trusses arch
upward. This type of truss will give your ceiling an arched look.

Inverted- An Inverted Truss is used to create cathedral and vaulted ceilings with
great spans. Scissor trusses are usually used in homes, whereas Double Inverted
Trusses are usually used commercially, and for churches. However, there are also
some creative things you can do with this truss to create a modern look for your
homes roofline. ( http://cortezcolorado.net/what-kind-of-trusses-to-use-for-different-roof-ceilingshapes/)

Studio- A Studio Truss is basically a common gabled truss roof, but with one ceiling
raise to accommodate a studio room, while the other half of the roof has an ordinary
flat ceiling. ( http://cortezcolorado.net/what-kind-of-trusses-to-use-for-different-roof-ceiling-shapes/)
Attic/ Storage- Attic Roof Trusses are usually designed to give the building a
standard eight-foot tall attic space. ( http://cortezcolorado.net/what-kind-of-trusses-to-use-fordifferent-roof-ceiling-shapes/)

Stub- A Stub or Bob-Tail Truss is a gable shaped truss that is clipped at the end. This
truss may be used where a triangular truss will not fit. It is usually stubbed to match
an existing ridge line with a shorter span or to change to a vaulted ceiling in the
opposite direction. ( http://cortezcolorado.net/what-kind-of-trusses-to-use-for-different-roof-ceilingshapes/)

Piggyback- Piggyback Trusses are used when the height of a required roof truss
exceeds the limit allowed by a states transportation department for transport on the
back of a truck.
Flat- A Flat Truss is used in roofs or floors. It may be designed as top or bottom chord
bearing, or for simple or multiple spans. It may also be cantilevered at one or both
ends. When used as a roof truss, they are not actually flat, but slightly sloped, which
prevents water from pooling on the roof and collapsing or damaging the structure .

Sloping Flat- A Sloping Flat Truss is used to create a vaulted ceiling. It may be top or
bottom chord bearing. This truss has parallel chords, both of which slope at the same
angle, with a vertical post at each end. ( http://cortezcolorado.net/what-kind-of-trusses-to-usefor-different-roof-ceiling-shapes/)
