The document reports on an experiment to study the kinetics of a second-order reaction at different temperatures. Tables of data show the volume of NaOH titrated over time at 40°C, 50°C, and 60°C. Graphs of 1/CA vs time were plotted and specific reaction rate constants (k) were calculated from the slopes. The k values increased with increasing temperature. An Arrhenius plot of ln(k) vs 1/T was linear, allowing calculation of the activation energy.

SAMPLE OF CALCULATIONS
To calculate CA at 40OC at 1 min
Volume of unreacted quenching HCl, V1 :
V1 = (CNaOH / CHCl) x /Volume of titrated NaOH
= ( 0.1 mol L-1 / 0.25 mol L-1 ) x 18.4 mL
= 7.36 mL
Volume of HCl reacted, V2 :
V2 = VHCl - V1
= 10 mL 7.36 mL
= 2.64 mL
Moles of reacted HCl, n1 :
n1 = CHCl x V2
= 0.25 mol/L x 2.64 mL x 1 L / 1000 mL
= 0.00066 mol
Moles of unreacted NaOH in sample, n2 :
N 2 = n1
= 0.00066 mol
Concentration of unreacted NaOH, CNaOH :
CNaOH unreacted = n2 / volume sample
= 0.00066 mol/ 0.05 L
= 0.0132 mol/ L

1/CA = 1/0.018 L/mol

= 75.757
To find specific reaction rate constant, k
From the slope of the graph.
To calculate the rate of reaction, -rA
-rA
= kCA2
= (0.4085 L/mol.min) x (0.0132mol/L)2
= 0.000071 mol/L.min
To calculate the activation energy from the reaction Ea
From the graph ln k vs 1/T, the equation for the best fit of the data is
y = -1.2483x + 2.4997
ln k = -1.2483 (1/T) + 2.4997
and the slope of the line given is
- Ea/R = -1.2483K
Ea
= 1.2483 K (8.314 J/mol.K)
= 10.3783 J/mol
Activation energy from Arrhenius equation
ln (k2/k1) = E/R (1/T1-1/T2)
ln (2.5451 /3.4953)/ (1/323 - 1/333) = E/(8.314)
E = -28369.87 J/mol
