PERFORMATIVE Speech Acts Do Not Just Reflect An Existing Reality But Create That

The concept of performativity relates to speech act theory, where performative speech acts create new realities rather than just describe them. For example, saying "I declare this meeting officially opened" brings the meeting into existence. Butler expanded this idea to how we construct our sense of self through systematically repeating certain acts. One example is gender performativity, where we perform behaviors associated with our gender identity.

Performativity

The idea of performativity is related to Austins SPEECH ACT THEORY in which

PERFORMATIVE speech acts do not just reflect an existing reality but create that
reality. For example, a performative SPEECH ACT such as I declare this meeting
officially opened creates a new reality in that before the words were uttered
the meeting was not yet happening. However, after they are uttered then a
meeting is actually taking place. Butler applied the concept of performativity
more broadly to refer to how we constitute our sense of self through a
systematic and repeated performance of certain types of acts. See GENDER
PERFORMATIVITY.
