Boot Life Testing Machine

The document describes the design of a boot life testing machine that was created to test the durability of army boots. The machine was designed to mimic the motion and forces of walking through a complex four-bar linkage mechanism. This mechanism uses a ternary link driven by a crank to replicate the geometry of walking. A prosthetic foot is attached to the linkage and rests on a sliding base to apply varying contact forces through a spring-loaded cam follower assembly over the course of the walking motion cycle. The design satisfies both the kinematic motion requirements and applies dynamic forces to fully simulate the stresses of walking on an army boot.

ProjectDiscussion
Thedesignwasdecomposedintotwosubproblems:first,todealwiththekinematicaspectsofdesignandthen
second, toincorporate the force requirements. The first stage was to simulate the walking motion, an exercise
purely in kinematics. A mechanism (Fig. 2) was conceived that would mimic the geometry of walking. The
ternary link (in shape of a rightangle triangle) was constrained by two arcshaped slots, and was driven by a
crankthroughacoupler.Thelinklengthswerechosensuchthattheternarylinkexactlyreplicatedthegeometry

thegoalwastoproduceanappropriatecontactforcevaryingwithtime,duringthemotion.Toaccomplish this,
the prosthetic foot was rested on a base that could slide on vertical guide rails (not included in the above
prototype). The force was generated by means of a cam follower assembly, where the follower was a spring
loaded between the base and the cam. Inputs to the cam and the linkage mechanism were coupled. The cam
profilewasdesignedsuch that it would produce a suitable deflection in the follower spring and thus cause an
appropriate force on the foot. With both the kinematic and dynamic requirements satisfied, the design for the
machinewasthuscomplete.
