Describe the context in which these artifacts were collected and identify the standard and
competency(s) that the artifact represents.
The artifact that I offer as evidence of an area of growth for me comes from GEDU:527,
Developmental Assessment and Guidance Curriculum in the Schools. With this assignment we
were to study our district's data focusing on one specific grade level. Then from that data choose
a area of need and develop a curriculum complete with lesson plans, standards, student activities
at least 3 lessons, and evaluative tool. This artifact will show that I am very competent in this
standard, much of competencies. However competency 1 presented a challenge for me.
What do they demonstrate to you about your learning and mastery of the competencies
which fall under this standard?
As stated above i think that I have show mastery with this standard specifically in choosing the
age appropriate lesson type. I believe that I am competent in pretty much all of the standard and
the accompanying competencies. As i looked over this particular assignment and reflected on
that day, I recalled that applying the lesson to kindergarteners presented a challenge for me.
Though the lesson plan was great, and set up well I struggled to effectively execute it. I did not
take into account how the behaviors that I had planned the lesson for would affect the delivery of
the lesson. There were many other factors that played a big part in the lesson fail. The major one
being that classroom as a whole lacked structure. The teacher visibly overwhelmed all of the
time. Her lack of comfort in leading her class, coupled with the virtually non existent classroom
structure manifested itself in the behaviors of the students. Lastly I will state that I did not know
many of the students, therefore there was no relationship to hold on to when trying to teach the
lesson.
What do these items of evidence tell you about your overall progress toward your personal
goals and your strength as a professional school counselor?
The evidence tells me that I need to be purposeful in my role as a Professional School Counselor
to be present in every classroom especially the younger classes. Kindergarteners are learning so
many new things that 1st year of school. I noticed during my practicum that sometimes because
they are littler and present less issue for concern because they are just learning they go
unnoticed. I spent very little time in their classrooms. Lastly I think that reinforcing positive
behavior has to start early and be consistent. I did not employ any of that during my lesson as I
focused more on the students who were misbehaving.
What are your plans for additional growth in this area?
My first plan of attack will be to schedule with the teacher a regular weekly rotation for me to do
lessons in the kindergarten classes. The idea that they know i am coming regularly may help to
calm their behavior as the novice of me coming will wear off. Secondly I will increase my
support and implementation of the Building Wide Positive Behavior In Supports as I
wholeheartedly believe in its effectiveness. Lastly, I will learn every student by name in an effort
to always greet them by name as a first step to building relationship with them.
