Wind Loads
Guide to the Wind Load Provisions of ASCE 7-10
Kishor C. Mehta and William L. Coulbourne
ASCE Press
This helpful guide focuses on the wind load provisions of Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other
Structures, Standard ASCE/SEI 7-10, that affect the planning, design, and construction of buildings for
residential and commercial purposes. The 2010 revision of the Standard significantly reorganized the wind
load provisions, expanding them from one to six chapters. Simplified methods of performing calculations for
common situations were added to the Standard, and guidelines for components and cladding were gathered
in a single chapter. This book is an essential reference for practicing structural engineers, as it offers the most
authoritative and in-depth interpretation of the wind loads section of Standard ASCE/SEI 7-10.

On February 27, 2010, an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 occurred off the coast of south-central Chile,
causing intense shaking for as long as three minutes and generating a tsunami that spread across the
Pacific Ocean. In April 2010, an ASCE-COPRI (Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute) team of
coastal, structural, and geotechnical engineers conducted a field investigation of 10 sites in Chile affected
by the earthquake and tsunami. This report presents the teams findings on which types of infrastructure
performed poorly and which performed as intended. For coastal engineers, structural engineers,
geotechnical engineers, and disaster risk managers, the observations and analyses in this report provide
critical information for engineering infrastructure that withstands major earthquake and tsunami events.

Managing Gigaprojects
Advice from Those Whove Been There, Done That
Edited by Patricia D. Galloway, Kris R. Nielsen, and Jack L. Dignum
ASCE Press
Managing Gigaprojects reports from the leading edge of the worlds biggest infrastructure construction
projects. Megaprojects, with costs of more than US$1 billion, are being surpassed by gigaprojects, with
pricetags higher than US$10 billion. These enormous projects are critical to meeting the growing demands
of global populations, yet they present daunting obstacles for effective planning, design, construction, and
delivery. Engineers, construction managers, planners, and risk managers will find in this volume useful
tools for the effective and efficient execution of megaprojects and gigaprojects. Managing Gigaprojects
is also an indispensable guide for investors, senior executives, board members, and other participants
involved in these large-scale projects.

Chile Earthquake and Tsunami of 2010
Performance of Coastal Infrastructure
NEW
On February 27, 2010, an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 occurred off the coast of south-central Chile,
causing intense shaking for as long as three minutes and generating a tsunami that spread across the
Pacific Ocean. In April 2010, an ASCE-COPRI (Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute) team of
coastal, structural, and geotechnical engineers conducted a field investigation of 10 sites in Chile affected
by the earthquake and tsunami. This report presents the teams findings on which types of infrastructure
performed poorly and which types performed as intended. For coastal engineers, structural engineers,
geotechnical engineers, and disaster risk managers, the observations and analyses in this report provide
critical information for engineering infrastructure that withstands major earthquake and tsunami events.

Seismic
Earthquakes and Engineers
An International History
Robert K. Reitherman
ASCE Press
Reitherman provides the first comprehensive treatment of the engineering techniques that have developed
in various countries to address their particular seismic problems. Fully international in scope, this
book surveys the significant issues in earthquake engineering and traces the evolution of humankinds
understanding of earthquakes. In addition to thorough examination of seismic technologies in structural
engineering, Reitherman also considers a selection of geotechnical, architectural, and urban planning
issues. This highly readable book is an essential reference for civil engineers whose work includes seismic
or lifeline components. Written in a straightforward, accessible style, it will also be valuable to architects,
planners, and officials at all levels of government.

The authors present a framework for applying the latest earthquake engineering research to the
nonstructural elements of individual building projects, concentrating on mechanical and electrical
systems. In this book, Gatscher, McGavin, and Caldwell prescribe a systems engineering approach to
nonstructural design and present several case studies to demonstrate this approach. They provide an
extensive survey of different methods for qualifying equipment and systems, including analysis, dynamic
testing, earthquake experience data, and comparative assessment using combined methods. This book
is a must-have for any engineer designing or specifying nonstructural systems and their components for
a building in an area with seismic risks. It will also be a valuable reference for architects, construction
managers, and building code officials.

On March 11, 2011, at 2:46 p.m. local time, the Great East Japan Earthquake with moment magnitude
9.0 generated a tsunami of unprecedented height and spatial extent along the northeast coast of the
main island of Honshu. The Japanese government estimated that more than 250,000 buildings either
collapsed or partially collapsed predominantly from the tsunami. ASCEs Structural Engineering
Institute sent a Tsunami Reconnaissance Team to Tohoku, Japan, to investigate and document the
performance of buildings and other structures affected by the tsunami. This report presents the sequence
of tsunami warning and evacuation, tsunami flow velocities, and debris loading. The authors describe the
performance, types of failure, and scour effects for a variety of structures.

Wind Loads
Guide to the Wind Load Provisions of ASCE 7-10
NEW
This helpful guide focuses on the wind load provisions of Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other
Structures, Standard ASCE/SEI 7-10, that affect the planning, design, and construction of buildings for
residential and commercial purposes.
