About the Seminar
Consumerism refers to wide range of activities of
government, business, Industries and independent
organizations designed to protect the rights of the
consumers. Consumerism is a movement of policies aimed at
regulating the products or services, methods or standards of
manufacturers, sellers and advertisers in the interest of
buyers. Consumerism which is driven by technology is
improving the way human beings live and chooses to live. In
other words, Information and Communication technologies
(ICT) have fundamental impact and huge influence on the
human civilization. The dramatic advancement of the ICT in
the recent years has provided an enormous prospective
benefits in all fields and especially in E-commerce.
E-commerce provides a great leverage not only to the
producers but also to the consumers and it has three basic
forms: business-to-business transactions (B2B), business-toconsumer transactions (B2C) and consumer-to-consumer
transactions (C2C). However, with the growth of ecommerce, the question of consumer protection has taken
the center stage. Online frauds are becoming common today.
There is no doubt that Consumer laws, policies, and practices
limiting fraudulent, misleading and unfair commercial
conduct are indispensable in building consumer confidence
and establishing a more balanced relationship between
businesses and consumers in commercial transactions.
Effective dispute resolution and redress mechanisms are key
to building trust as the lack of such mechanisms can inhibit
consumers from taking full advantage of e-commerce.
Globalization and information technology have changed the
way market operates and consumers behave in the market.
Hence, the seminar is an attempt to discuss various issues
concerning impact of globalization and information
technology on Consumerism.
