A one-day break between storms gave emergency crews in California the chance to rescue
stranded residents after the heaviest rain in a
decade swamped parts of California and Nevada. Wine country in Sonoma County, California, was among the hardest hit areas, with
up to 13 inches of rain since Friday. The Associated Press reported that the Russian River in
Sonoma rose to its highest level since 2006,
spilling over its banks and forcing the closure
of schools and roads. Another strong storm
was bearing down on the region, as part of an
atmospheric river. The weather system is
also known as the pineapple express. A23

Thousands continued to fill the Basilica Minore del Sto. Nio to offer

COMPACT
The changes you now see in SunStar Cebu began nearly two years
ago, when the idea of converting
to a compact format surfaced in a
strategic planning session of the
SunStar Media Group.
It was a spirited discussion.
We all agreed a change was overdue. A readership survey and
focus group discussions in late
2015 had yielded insights about
what our readers needed. They
needed an authoritative source of
stories that mattered, and more
information they could digest in
less time.
Yet it took us some time to
embrace the idea of such a major change.
SunStars design has undergone some changes in the last
34 years, but none as dramatic
as this. And when it comes to
change, past success can be ones
biggest hurdle.
A turning point for us was
when the Cebuano graphic
designer, poet and illustrator
Adonis Durado came onboard as
design consultant. He had joined
SunStar as a college student in
1996 and stayed until 2002. Now
based in Oman as the design di-

Electric best describes the
mood in the session when Durado first presented his studies on
SunStar Cebus new design. Our
main concern when we first explored the idea of going compact
was that our community of readers might feel they were getting

SunStar has grown from a single
community newspaper serving
Cebu to the leading information
provider on community news
about the Philippines to all corners of the globe.
SunStar now pushes content
through six English newspapers,
three tabloids in local languages,
a few e-papers, a news website,
and several social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram
and Twitter.
We are excited and proud to
bring you our latest innovation,
a completely new design and a
more versatile and handy size of
SunStar Cebu, our flagship newspaper. There is something for
everyone in it. It is easier to take
along since it now comes in a
smaller, compact size. Its easier
on the eyes because of its modern, visually appealing design. It
will target a broader audience by
having shorter stories supported
by larger photos and infographics. It will offer advertisers a wide
new range of advertising options.
It will appeal more to the millennials because much of the content will now offer some degree
of interactivity.
And this is just the beginning.
As we celebrate our 35th year,
we are working very hard to bring
you a new way of getting information from SunStar. You can look
forward to more new innovations
in the coming year. Experience the

22.2% in october
Foreign direct investments (FDIs) into the Philippines rose to $6.22 billion in the first 10 months of
2016, up 22.2 percent from $5.1 billion a year ago.
Data released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas
(BSP) Tuesday show the end-October 2016 net
FDI inflows was boosted by placements in debt
instruments amounting to $3.94 billion, up 34.9
percent year-on-year. Net equity capital rose 9.3
percent to $1.67 billion because of higher placements in real estate, manufacturing; wholesale and retail trade; electricity, gas, steam and
air-conditioning supply; and human health and
social work activities. Most of these funds came
from Japan, Singapore, US, Hong Kong and Taiwan. On the other hand, reinvested earnings fell

Leuterio said these locations
already have their own attractions that draw buyers to acquire
properties for investment, enduse or second homes.
National Real Estate Association, Inc. (NREA) chairman Alejandro Maalac said that 2017
also brings more opportunities
for real estate players who were
able to position themselves in
terms of land banking and capital
requirements.
2017 is an exciting year for
the industry. Real estate will have
expanded opportunities and
those with active involvement
in it can do so many things with
the world becoming smaller. The
world now is looking at the Philippines, said Maalac, adding
that investors and buyers are not
as concerned about the political
noise.
What investors look at are
numbers, the bottomline. They
want to see solid performance
and not the noise, he added.
With the rosy outlook in real estate, Leuterio said it is about time
developers get into their boardrooms to craft strategic plans and
brainstorm on innovative projects.
My advice to all developers
is to build outside the city and
be conservative on pricing. Offer
what the market wants and act
fast before big players will catch
you, said Leuterio.
Leuterio said overseas Filipino
workers remain the top buyers of

Inflation in
China adds
uncertainty
Stocks were mostly higher Tuesday as economic data raised
questions of how China might
curb speculative market bubbles
as inflation rises.
In Europe, Germanys DAX
was up 0.1 percent to 11,579 while
the CAC40 of France was flat at
4,889. Britains FTSE 100 gained
0.4 percent to 7,266. Wall Street
looked set to open without much
direction, with S&P 500 and Dow
futures both largely flat.
Chinas economy is estimated to have grown 6.7 percent in
2016, officials said, within the target range of 6.5 percent to sevem
percent. Beijing will continue to
cut excess capacity in steelmaking and other industries, the officials from the main planning
agency told reporters. Fresh data
showed Chinas factory price
index hit a five-year high in December at 5.5 percent over a year
before. Consumer prices rose 2.1
percent in December and two
percent in 2016.
Higher prices could delay Chinas efforts to curb excess industrial capacity, while the central
bank is still focused on curbing speculative pressures and
mounting debt, David Qu and
Raymond Yeung of ANZ said in a
commentary.
Given slowing growth and
uncertainties in the economy,
such as exports and fixed asset
investment, we do not think the
central bank will start to tighten
in the first half of 2017, they said.

Xinjiang tightens border

China says it is tightening border controls in its northwestern Xinjiang region amid rising terrorism threats.
State media reported Tuesday that Xinjiangs governor Shohrat Zakir made the pledge in a speech at
the regions main annual political meeting on Monday. Zakir said increased measures taken in the last
year would be further strengthened. Xinjiang has
long been home to a simmering insurgency against
Beijings rule being waged by extremists among the
native Turkic-speaking Uighur (WEE-gur) ethnic
group, who are mainly Muslim and culturally distinct from most Chinese. Xinjiang shares a border
with Afghanistan, Pakistan and four nations in the
often volatile Central Asian region. / AP

yes, her trainer Edmond Tarvedyan had previously claimed Rousey was good enough to become a
world boxing champion.
In fact, some pundits (shockingly) joined the
bandwagon and even the Ring Magazine put out
an issue with Rousey on the cover entitled She
conquered MMA, is boxing next?
We all know what happened. Holm pummeled
Rousey senseless in the middle of the cage and
handed her the first loss of her spectacular career.
So coming in to the Nunes fight you would
think Rouseys team had learned their lesson. Or
maybe because they knew Nunes had lost before
due to strikes, they mistakenly thought Rousey was
a better striker.
THE FIGHT. It was really painful to watch for a
Rousey fan like me. Ive said it before and Ill say it
again. Shes just not a striker. She has to play to her
strengths.
The first hard punch that landed froze her
and it went downhill from there. I did not see
any head movement nor any appreciable lateral
movement.
She fought back but she was too stiff and for
her efforts, she opened herself up to more punishment.
She didnt even know how to clinch properly or
tie up her opponent to stifle Nunes offense.
I could go on and on, but its no use beating a
dead horse. Or a hopelessly stubborn coach.

Heb 2:14-18 / Gospel: Mk 1:29-39
Reflection:
Sin Solidarity = Death
We continue pushing forward the mystery of the Baptism of the Lord in todays
readings. Jesus identification with sinful
humanity means Jesus embracing of the
full consequence of being humanbeing
subject to death! The awesome implication of the mystery of the baptism of Jesus
is now revealed! The waters of the Jordan
that had received the sins of the so many
John had baptized. Jesus descended, as it
were, into contaminated water so that He
SUDOKU
sinless might be contaminated with Sin.
Thus, through his baptism at the Jordan
Jesus enters into a Sin-solidarity with
humanity. Jesus, the Incarnate, though
sinless, voluntarily shared mans common lot: Sin and its fruit, death! (Rom
6:23 says For the wages of sin is death.)
In yesterdays Gospel, Jesus expelled Satan from the possessed man. Today Jesus
strikes at one common sign of our mortality, namely, sickness. Jesus curing of the
sick mother-in-law of Peter and the subsequent sick who were brought to Jesus for
healing clearly indicated that Jesus had
come to destroy the root cause of all sicknesssin! And Jesus will bring that good
news to all!

people have
been arrested
in relation to
the robbery of
Kim Kardashian in Paris last
October.
E! News,
based on the report of French
newspaper Le Monde, said one
of the 17 suspects was a limo
driver from an upscale limousine company that the Kardashians frequently hire during
their numerous visits to Paris.
While Kim is relieved that
there has been an update on her
robbery, according to Us Weekly
magazine, any progress made
on the incident makes her relive
everything that happened.
Its still very tough for her to
deal with, the source said.
E! News, which belongs to
the same network that airs the
Kardashian family reality show,
also got confirmation from Paris
police that a 27-year-old limo
driver is in custody related to the
multi-million-dollar heist.
The driver was reportedly
the last to chauffer Kim before
the robbery, hence, was privy
to her movements.
Le Monde also reported
that of the 17 suspects, three
were women. The oldest
suspect was 72 years old and
goes by the name of Pierre B,
the alleged leader. Five of the
suspects were known burglars
with an average age of 55.
E! also learned that police
had to break down the gate of
Pierres villa located in the
south of France.
The lead for Paris police
came in the form of DNA
(deoxyribonucleic acid)
found in a hose clamp believed to have been used to
rob Kim. The DNA matched
one that was already in the
