Pablito Loberanes, 30, had just posted bail

in a case for possession of illegal drugs and
illegal posssession of firearms when four men
shot and killed him in Mandaue City yesterday. The ambush took place at the corner
of P. Rosal and M.C. Briones Sts., about a
kilometer away from the courthouse. Five
relatives were with Loberanes in a Suzuki
mini-van, two of whom were wounded in the
attack. Police said that Loberanes was the
first person in Mandaue City to surrender in
response to Oplan Tokhang last June 2016. He
brought his live-in partner and their eightmonth-old child when he showed up at the
police office for profiling. But the authorities
again arrested him last Jan. 1, after a road
accident led traffic investigators to his car,
where they found 14 sachets of shabu and an

The changes you now see in SunStar Cebu began nearly two years
ago, when the idea of converting
to a compact format surfaced in a
strategic planning session of the
SunStar Media Group.
It was a spirited discussion.
We all agreed a change was overdue. A readership survey and
focus group discussions in late
2015 had yielded insights about
what our readers needed. They
needed an authoritative source of
stories that mattered, and more
information they could digest in
less time.
Yet it took us some time to
embrace the idea of such a major change.
SunStars design has undergone some changes in the last
34 years, but none as dramatic
as this. And when it comes to
change, past success can be ones
biggest hurdle.
A turning point for us was
when the Cebuano graphic
designer, poet and illustrator
Adonis Durado came onboard as
design consultant. He had joined
SunStar as a college student in
1996 and stayed until 2002. Now
based in Oman as the design di-

Asked about what he most
hoped to achieve with the SunStar redesign project, Durado
said, I hope to bring a new level
of sophistication in visual journalism here in Cebu: a regional
paper with international design
flair. SunStars compact look has
a design DNA of complex grid
and elegant typography. And I
also want to showcase that good
design is very much utilitarian.

What amuses me on this project is the fact that I did my college
thesis on evaluating SunStars

More than 30 families from the

area in Barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City were evacuated, following heavy rains yesterday.
Mayor Luigi Quisumbing ordered a forced evacuation at the
relocation site to the areas multipurpose building when the water rose after the Butuanon River
overflowed.
Also, they were expecting
high tide, he said.

Two houses in the city were
also destroyed by landslide, but

President Rodrigo Duterte has

called a meeting today with all
mayors in the country, regardless
of political affiliation.
This, after he announced that
he would kill chief executives
who are engaged in the illegal
drugs trade.
Duterte will first meet with
mayors from the Visayas and
Mindanao at 2 p.m., followed by

mayors from Luzon at 4 p.m.
Daanbantayan Mayor Vicente
Loot, a retired police general
who was on Dutertes list of drug
lord protectors, said he will attend so he can personally explain
his side to the President.
Loot said he will bring no
bodyguard, entrusting his safety to God while traveling to
Malacaang.

the people who want me destroyed politically are those who
are in the yellow group and who
campaign against him (Duterte)
during the last election, he said.

When the matter was tackled,
Daluz asked the legislative body
to override only three items that
were opposed by the mayor.
Daluz explained that the reason they required the councils
approval before the City hires
job-order ( JO) workers is to make
sure that the local project where
their services are needed is approved first.
He also explained the provision (Section 14) requiring the appointment of the barangay captains first before allowances of
tanods, garbage collectors, street
sweepers, lupong tagapamayapa
and barangay environment officers are released.
The purpose of this is to
give emphasis to the role of our
barangays. The barangay serves
as the primary planning and implementing unit of government
policies, plans, programs and
projects in their community.
We just want to be assured that
the aid to the barangays really
goes to the barangay workers,
Daluz said.
Its the same reason they required the barangay captains appointment before salaries of the
barangay health workers (Section
15) are released.
We are not really imposing an additional requirement.
It would be best if the barangay
is involved in the identification
of barangay health workers, he
added.
Osmea had said the provisions
inserted by the council in the budget ordinance are ultra-vires, or beyond the councils power.

Felix Cabusas believes he has

contributed to his faith as a
sculptor of religious icons, including the Sto. Nio.

Cabusas prays before carving.

can create the correct details),
said the 45-year-old resident of Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City.
When he was still new in the
business, Cabusas said he felt
guilty about carving religious
statues in exchange for money.
He also prayed at the time.
The sculptor, however, does
not seek divine intervention for
clear eyesight when he is doing
the finer details of a statue. He
wears eyeglasses.
Afraid he might commit errors if his hands are shaky, Cabusas drinks a small amount of coffee in the morning, before going
to work.
His income enjoys a surge
when the Holy Week draws near.
Most of the customers hire him
either to repair their old statues
or to sculpt the Pieta, which depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the
dead body of Jesus Christ.
Cabusas said that only a few
Sto. Nio devotees commissioned him to carve the icon out
of wood in the past years. The
statues he made were based on
photographs or replicas of the
original icon kept in the Basilica
Minore del Sto. Nio de Cebu.
Last Dec. 5, a devotee paid him
to make a two-foot-tall wooden
Sto. Nio statue. It took him two
weeks to complete the project.

Born into a family of carpenters, Cabusas said he is the only
one who knows how to sculpt religious figures.

Cabusas started in 1998, under

Cabaero Sculptural Works,
located across the Holy Cross
Parish in Basak Pardo, currently
employs Cabusas.
He is paid P800 per foot.
The sculptor likes to teach
the youth, and he believes that
imparting his talent is his way of
sharing his blessings.
Cabusas, who does not consider himself an artist, plans not
to retire, because he has no children who can take care of him.
He also parted ways with
his live-in partner last year, after learning that the woman indulged in vice.
Cabusas said he has moved
on since the heartbreak and he
told himself to dedicate his life to
carving religious icons.

I can no longer manage it, then

Officers of the Police Regional Office (PRO) in Central Visayas are

on their toes for the possibility
that the petty thieves who were
busy during the Black Nazarene
feast in Manila will target Sinulog
revelers in Cebu City on Sunday.

their security preparations as the
festival draws near.
For his part, Cebu City Police
Office (CCPO) Director Joel Doria
has directed his 11 police station
commanders and the intelligence
chief to coordinate with the lodging houses, inns, motels, hotels
and pension houses, so they can

check the background of the suspicious-looking clients.
In January last year, after
the Black Nazerene feast, the
CCPOs Theft and Robbery Section caught nine suspected pickpockets from Manila, Taguig City,
Makati City and Pasay City.
They arrived in Cebu City
three days before the Sinulog and
stayed inside the two rooms of an
inn in Cebu Citys North Reclamation Area.
Seized from their possession were assorted wallets, ATM
cards, identification cards, students subject load cards, passenger ship receipts, money transfer
firm receipts and pictures.
Talio said they have not recently monitored imminent and

specific threats.
The threat, however, is always there. We all shouldnot

Naga after a spillway overflowed
due to heavy rains yesterday.
The flooding started at 11 a.m.
in a barangay access road that
connects Barangays Balirong and
Uling, said Rey Mantalaba of the
City of Naga Local Disaster and
Risk Reduction Management
Office. Mantalaba said the flooding prevented motorcycles and
other vehicles from entering the
area. There were no reports of a
landslide in the area, but authorities had to divert vehicular traffic there until the flood subsides,

ambush shortly after posting bail
for drugs and illegal possession
of firearms past noon yesterday.
Pablito Loberanes, 30, died on
the spot after four unidentified
men, who were riding in tandem
on two motorcycles, waylaid and
fired at the Suzuki mini-van that
he and his five relatives were riding on at the corner of P. Rosal
and M.C Briones Sts.
Daisy Pacho, one of Loberanes companions, also died before reaching the hospital, said
Senior Insp. Janelito Marquez,
chief of Mandaue Police Station 1.
His two other companions,
identified by the police as Jerson
Hermosa, the mini-van driver,
and the woman named Ganggang, were wounded. The
remaining passengers, Eva Valiente and Darlene Casona, were
unscathed.
The woman (Ganggang) who
was confined at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center was
provided with security so she can

help in identifying the gunmen,
Marquez said in Cebuano.
Loberanes and his companions were on their way to Barangay Paknaan from the Palace
of Justice when the attack happened. The crime scene is about
a kilometer away from the court.
The suspects were wearing
helmets and jackets.
Loberanes was reportedly the
first drug surrenderer in the Operation Tokhang in Mandaue in
June 2016, after the police intensified their anti-drug campaign.
He was accompanied by his
live-in partner and eight-monthold child when he submitted
himself for profiling to former
Mandaue City Police Office director Jonathan Cabal.
However, Loberanes was
again arrested last Jan. 1.
According to some reports, he
continued with his illegal drug activities in Mandaue and other areas
in the province, said Marquez.
On Jan. 1, Loberanes was arrested when he hit two jeepneys
and a taxi on the highway in Barangay Basak. He tried to escape

n many ways, the paper you now hold has

changed. But on certain fundamental points,
it remains the same.
In an industry at once disrupted and empowered by technological and social change,

What changed?
For one, weve chosen a compact format
that compels a more mindful selection of stories
and tighter writing. Its easy to say that stories
should only be as long as they need to be. Newsroom veterans will tell you that doesnt always
happen, because most print journalists will fight
for every column inch they can leave their mark

But more than that, we wanted to present
our journalism in a fresher, more compelling

his might have gone viral by now but last

Sunday, in the middle of our flight back to
Cebu, a voice came through the interphone: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,
this is NOT your captain speaking. I forget his
name but he went on to tell us he had something very important to say to a lady in seat 17C.
The moment he professed his love for the
lady, the passengers caught on and whipped out
their cell phones to record not just the words of
endearment and acts of contrition (for past lapses) but also the mid-air dramas final act which
was the man slipping an engagement ring on to
the finger of his lady love. We all warmed up
to the couple and applauded them heartily for
their 32,000 feet above sea level show of love.
The incident brought my thoughts to another not unrelated incident the day before at
the Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo, Rizal. In an
elegantly simple but deeply meaningful ceremony they wrote and designed, I presided over
the re-enactment of my nieces (first cousins
daughter) wedding to her husband.
They had quietly married before a judge in
June with just the immediate family in attendance. But they wanted a more personal and
meaningful re-enactment before a bigger crowd
that included their extended families and close
friends. It was just a re-enactment and was not
a religious ceremony either, so I needed neither
legal license nor Church clearance to preside
over it.
Proposing in the most unlikely places has
been trending for a while now. I have heard of
proposals done underwater or while jumping
from an airplane. Proposing mid-flight is rather
tame as wild proposals go but from YouTube
I learned these have happened many times
before in Air Asia flights.
But there is also this other trend to get married quietly before a judge or a priest and later
arrange for a less ritualistic but more meaningful ceremony with a bigger reception and in a
venue more romantic than the inside of a court
or of a Church. I know of at least two other
such re-enactments, one of them at a resort
here in Cebu. My own son asked to be married
in a garden by the pastor of his wifes Church
because his Catholic Church would not allow
them a garden wedding.
I am reading in the millenial generations
dislike for standard sacred places and religious
formulae as part of a rejection of whatever is
rote and perfunctory that hardly reflects the
personal meaning they want to lend to their
celebrations of love and life.
Many of them, as the trending shows, just do
not find meaning in canned (ready-made) words
and rituals for important events of their lives
such as weddings. Catholic religious leaders had
much better put their ears on the ground or risk
being startled into irrelevance.

that the pork barrel system is unconstitutional is
for lawmakers to interfere in their implementation.

two lawyers of a plunder case against former president Benigno Aquino III, former
Department of Interior and Local Government
(DILG) secretary Mar Roxas, former justice secretary and now senator Leila de Lima, former Senate
president and still senator Franklin Drilon, former
finance secretary Cesar Purisima and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas governor Amando Tetangco Jr.
Lawyers Fernando Perito and Rogelio Cantoria
went to the Office of the Ombudsman accusing
Aquino and the others of allegedly shipping in
December 2014 gold valued at around $140 million
from the Union Bank of Switzerland to the Bank of
Thailand without the approval, knowledge or acquiescence of the Filipino people as the registered
owner and of the Philippine government through a
congressional imprimatur.
The complaint was obviously based on a fake
news article titled 3,500 Metric Tons of Gold
Deposited at Thailand Bank During the Administration of Aquino that came out in the fake news
website Trending News Portal. The article, to
make its content sound convincing, mentioned
Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) circulars on the
transfer that turned out to be spurious. Expect the
case to be dismissed sooner than later.
But that is not my point. The filing of the case
came out amidst other questionable reports, like
those that supposedly talked about plots to oust
President Rodrigo Duterte. The Manila Bulletin
reported about a supposed blueprint by former
United States ambassador to the Philippines Philip
Goldberg to undermine Dutertes rule.
The US Embassy naturally denied the allegation
and the existence of the blueprint and because
the report didnt have much to stand on, nothing much came out from it. Some leaders of the
Duterte-controlled House of Representatives talked
about conducting an investigation on the matter
but nothing also came out of it. Which means that
whoever was behind the yarn merely wanted to get
propaganda mileage from it.
The latest is a social media-fueled claim of
another plot to oust Duterte by a group identified with Vice President Leni Robredo. Note that
Robredo has become a favorite target of vociferous
Duterte supporters after she resigned from the
Cabinet. The plot was supposedly exposed by a
pro-Duterte blogger Thinking Pinoy. The blogger
leaked a few e-mails that are now hashtagged lenileaks, even if these werent from Robredo.
The emails were an exchange by members of
the Global Filipino Diaspora Council (GFDC) that
include billionaire Loida Nicolas-Lewis. But even
Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre said that the
emails, because these merely sought to ask the
President to resign, are not illegal. Some proDuterte lawmakers, as expected, made some noise
about it but I doubt if that would fly. The intention
is merely to taint Robredos image.
We all know that during the campaign for
the May presidential polls, a well-financed group
worked behind the scenes using social media and
other mediums to influence the result of the elections. Is the same group orchestrating this obvious
propaganda assault?

Abella dismissed Lacsons allegation of a

conspiracy between the executive branch and
Congress in reviving lump-sum allocations under
the graft-ridden Priority Development Assistance
Fund (PDAF).
Pimentel also denied Lacsons claim that
Malacaang had asked senators to submit a list of
projects amounting to P300 million each for inclusion in this years annual budget.
Pimentel said he and Lacson had a technical
difference in the definition of pork barrel. Theres
always a definition favoring the lawmakers.
Pimentel said he accepted the courts ruling

prohibiting lawmakers from interfering in the implementation of their pet projects after the budget
law had been passed.
That is the act that we should guard against
not that lawmakers have their ideas or proposals
incorporated into the budget, Pimentel said.
Would Lacson, now the lone voice in Congress
against the pork barrel, watch over the lawmakers
pet projects?

Manayon, whom they accused of being arrogant and
not approachable and of having dictatorial tendency. They also condemned the collection of high rates
for wedding, baptism and burial masses.
In their position paper addressed to Archbishop Jose Palma and the Board of Consultors, they
asked that Manayon be investigated and transferred to another parish. The Board of Consultors
is composed of episcopal vicars and bishops.
The petitioners said they sought an audience
with Palma four times to personally air their concerns against Fr. Manayon. But they got frustrated
because their appeal fell on deaf ears. Heres a
portion of an addendum to their letter:
The pastoral council of our parish had to stop
certain parishioners from going to the media, if
only to protect the local church from embarrassment. Instead, we held a dialogue and explained
to them that the proper way is to seek help from
the proper church authority. It is just unfortunate
that our small voices were simply ignored by the
above-mentioned church authorities...
We have visited the Archbishop Palace four
times but obviously our presence and our voices

Well, this is the usual case. The church hierarchy has the tendency to side with its priests even if

Ministry assigned in Minglanilla parish. They were
not immediately re-assigned or suspended from
performing their priestly functions.

his passion, death and resurrection.
When a devotion is partly more so totally
removed from the very source of its meaning, it
runs the danger of turning itself into an empty and
repetitive show or performance merely cultic and
cultural, or worse commercial. Any devotion that
cannot or is not connected to its spiritual source is
a few steps closer to fanaticism. Or at the very least
it is a business disguised as a religious tradition.
We need not wonder therefore why there is
an obvious contradiction of values among many
Filipinos. On the one hand they continue to pray to
a God who is loving and merciful but on the other
hand they do not see or feel anything worrisome
with individuals being killed without due process.
If one would be truly honest in his or her conviction as a Christian, it would be unthinkable to follow Jesus and his Gospel values while at the same
time supporting a system that harbors or promotes
injustice in an organized fashion.
Unfortunately, there has been so much of
misunderstanding or lack of understanding in our
popular piety. The more unfortunate reality is that
those who are supposed to educate the people
are primarily responsible for the peoples lack of
understanding. It seems that we have been feeding
on the ignorance and fanaticism of the many. (to be

to show that popular religiosity or piety
remains integral in the lives of many Filipinos. The crowds are marvelous and the devotion
appears to be inspiring. We can say of the same
with the other forms of devotion in the Philippines
such as the Nazareno or the Virgin Mary.
However, I am bothered by the fact that in
a country where people are so serious in their
religious devotions, support for a government that
is apparently passive in the face of Extra Judicial
Killings remains high. We may add that this same
government is now planning to reinstitute capital
punishment despite the fact that our countrys justice system remains skewed. As of December 2016,
President Duterte enjoys a 72% trust rating, which
according to SWS is excellent.
Religiosity or piety is supposed to be rooted in
more essential spiritual traditions that have values
of its own. The devotion to the Santo Nino is not a
mindless veneration of an image or a mere appreciation of an historical artifact. The Holy Child is
none other than Jesus himself, a historical person
whose message was intended for a specific group
of people: the poor, oppressed and abandoned.
To be truly devoted to the Santo Nino therefore
means to know and to follow Jesus whose ministry
did not end with his childhood but culminated in

the Year of the Fire Rooster could bring both
luck and misfortune for President Rodrigo
Duterte, who was born on March 28, 1945 and
which is a rooster year. There are no hard and fast
rules in the zodiac in determining what the year
holds for an individual, but it would also be good
for the President to take heed of the warnings.
The Chinese Zodiac says that people born
on the year of the Wood Rooster, are energetic,
overconfident, tender, and unstable, characteristics that easily describe the President. But its not
as if zodiac signs determine the probabilities in a
presidency. It is still his sincerity and commitment
to his earlier pronouncements and promises to the
people that would determine whether his administration would succeed or fail in the coming days.
Topping the list of issues that are subjects of
President Digongs assurances during the campaign period was the peace process. People really
banked on it, believing in his previous capacity to
talk with revolutionary forces.
Perhaps, it is still too early to speculate based
on recent turn of events, but one of the glaring
realities that seem to cloud the talks is the slow
pace of the release of political prisoners. Will they
be freed or not? There are many conjectures going
around now, certain things that self-proclaimed
gurus of national issues think they know better.
People tend to expect new things to happen
at the turn of another year. This has become so
predictable that, like the plot in teleseryes, only
the characters are changed so that one can guess
where the story is headed. It becomes boring.
(But TV networks continue to air such programs
because first, they think the masa want them and
second, advertisers pour their money into them.)
Together with these are the negativity and gore
that TV news programs pass off as information
and which do not help people understand the
issues but only add to the hopelessness and disillusionment of citizens regarding the state of affairs
in our country. And so we ask, just like in a song:
Where do we go from here?
Anyway, the so-called prisoners of conscience
and their families are waiting for the fulfillment of
the Presidents promise but that might never
come. But why his seeming change of heart?
It must be clarified here, though, that political prisoners are not criminals. They only got
incarcerated because the former administrations
and their military minions considered them as
threats to their effort to quell the insurgency.
These people didnt realize that the real solution
to the problem of insurgency is by addressing the
root causes of poverty and not going after personalities or ideologues, who in the first place are the
ones who saw what these problems are.
Sad to say, President Digong is falling on the
same trap that his predecessors have fallen into,
believing that the only solution to the insurgency
problem is silencing the complaints with the use
of the gun. And we thought we have found an ally
in the quest for peace in President Digong. from

by 6.8 percent to 7.1 percent in the fourth quarter of
2016, bringing the average full-year growth to about
seven percent, according to the National Economic

Foreign direct investments (FDIs) into the Philippines rose to $6.22 billion in the first 10 months of
2016, up 22.2 percent from $5.1 billion a year ago.
Data released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas
(BSP) Tuesday show the end-October 2016 net
FDI inflows was boosted by placements in debt
instruments amounting to $3.94 billion, up 34.9
percent year-on-year. Net equity capital rose 9.3
percent to $1.67 billion because of higher placements in real estate, manufacturing; wholesale and retail trade; electricity, gas, steam and
air-conditioning supply; and human health and
social work activities. Most of these funds came
from Japan, Singapore, US, Hong Kong and Taiwan. On the other hand, reinvested earnings fell
5.2 percent to $605 million from the $637 million

attract real estate projects this year.

brokerage owner and founder
of real estate solutions company
Filipino Homes, said that aside
from supply and demand, property developers nowadays are
also looking at local assets, such
as tourism, as another important
factor to consider for expansion.
He said that as competition
tightens, players are actively
looking for sites with tourism
assets that can add value to the
projects they are likely to build.
He noted that as real estate projects are more closely tied to tourism destinations, marketing it becomes easier.

opening statement, said Leuterio, who now has 14,000 licensed

7 said 3,528 workers in Central Visayas have been
made regular employees since the campaign against
illegal contractualization started in August.
In a statement, Dole 7 Director Exequiel R. Sarcauga said 61 establishments voluntarily turned in compliance for directly-hired workers.
Out of the 2,540 non-regular workers recorded,
around 1,714 of them had been made regular.
Meanwhile, 1,788 out of 3,541 hired by agencies,
contractors and subcontractors became regular workers. The data gathered, according to Dole, was based
on the voluntary compliance reports submitted by the
establishments and by the results of the joint assessments conducted.
In addition, the regional labor agency recorded 135
establishments or principals engaged in labor-only-contracting (LOC) affecting 3,519 contractual workers.
Dole defines LOC as an illegitimate form of contractualization and involves an arrangement where
the contractor or subcontractor merely recruits,
supplies or places workers to perform a job, work or
service for a principal, and where the contractor or
subcontractor does not have substantial capital or
investment which relates to the job.
Contractors that do not exercise the right to control over the performance of the work of the contractual employees is also a form of LOC.
Since August, Dole 7 has facilitated 32 consultations and orientations on end of contract (endo)
with the Industrial Tripartite Councils (ITCs) and
various industries.
Included were those in manufacturing; restaurant
services; bakeshops; retail or wholesale; hotels and
resorts; electric utilities; commissaries; warehouses;
construction; and business process management.

needs more volunteer mentors
to make the program sustainable.

volunteer mentors, said Lopez.
While he lauded the mentoring programs implemented in the
different regions, Lopez sees the
need to institutionalize the program so it could reach as many

mentors out there that we can
tap for this program. It is not
every day that there is a mentoring program, after these batches
graduate, when will be the next?

said Lopez. Part of the plan is to
set up four tables at the Negosyo
Centers representing the four
core areas of business.
The DTI regional offices, on
the other hand, need to invite
more mentors who will commit
their time to serve as mentors
of the day on a specific subject.
As soon, as the DTI gets the commitment of these mentors, it
must disseminate the schedule
to MSMEs so they can set up an
appointment by calling the DTI
office or through the website.
This way, MSMEs need not to
queue physically but arrive on
the approved schedule.

Raymond Yeung of ANZ said in a
commentary.
Given slowing growth and

students of Sinsin National High
School in Cebu City will soon
reap the benefits of having a technical-vocational program following the turnover of an agri-vocational project to support DepEds
K+12 initiative.
The project, which was
turned over last Dec. 16, involved
the construction of a chicken and
quail layer house with ready to
lay chicken and quail, and a seminar on basic layer management.
It provides high school graduates with opportunities to acquire certifiable technical vocational skills and venture into
entrepreneurship.
The project has been conceptualized and implemented by
eight Aboitiz scholars, namely,

John Arrofo, Carlo Galicia, Jamisola Jhen Gigje, Ma. Christina

President Rodrigo Duterte has

approved a P1,000 increase in
the monthly pension of Social
Security System (SSS) members
effective this month, his spokesperson said Tuesday.
President Duterte has approved a P1,000 hike this
month, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a press
conference.
The bad news is premium

contributions will also increase
starting May this year, said SSS
chair Amado Valdez.
Abella said premium contributions would increase by 1.5
percent yearly, or to 12.5 percent
this year from the current 11-percent rate.
Abella said the additional total
contribution would range from
the original P15 to P740.
During the same press conference, Valdez welcomed the Presidents decision and vowed to
cooperate with the government.

SSS contributions and Investment Reserve Fund.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe would be here for a
two-day official visit on January 12 to 13. Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said Abe

are expected to discuss regional issues, including counter-terrorism. Abella said the Japanese
leader would spend his first day in Manila as he
was scheduled to have a state dinner with Duterte

official visit to Japan in October last year, Duterte
was able to get 12 business agreements valued

Eight Filipino fishermen were
killed after at least five suspected
pirates boarded a fishing boat in
southern Philippine waters and
strafed the crew, officials said
Tuesday.
Seven other fishermen survived Monday nights attack in
waters near southern Zamboanga
City by jumping off the vessel as
the gunmen started shooting and
swimming toward an island, said
Lt. Commander Alvin Dagalea.
Dagalea, commander of the
Coast Guard station in Zamboanga on Mindanao island, said some
of the survivors were rescued by
a passing motorboat while others
were found on the nearby Island.
Their boat, riddled with holes, sank.
Dagalea said in a telephone
interview that the men were on a

fishing trip when the armed men
approached on another boat and
then boarded their vessel and ordered them to go to the bow area.
Then suddenly the armed

A disappointing comeback for Rousey
ho doesnt love a good comeback? As

feel good stories go, an athlete who
comes back against all odds to regain
ones status at the apex of his/her chosen sport has
to rank right up there.For former UFC womens
Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, it seemed
like UFC 207 provided the perfect climate to stage
a rousing comeback.
After losing to Holly Holm back in Nov. 2015
at UFC 193, Ronda took some time off to lick her
wounds and exorcise her demons.
During the period of her brief hiatus, Holm had
lost the title in her first defense to Meisha Tate at
UFC 196 but then the latter got waylaid in her very
next fight by Amanda Nunes at UFC 200.
With the belt changing hands frequently it
seemed like the division needed a dominant champion like Rousey who was capable of sowing order
in a rather discordant environment.
NUNES. A powerful striker whose first discipline was boxing, Nunes also holds a black belt in
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The way she fought and eventually dominated
Meisha Tate should have been a cue to how she
likes to aggressively mix it up.
Nunes had lost before via TKO to strikes, but
herein lies the problem in Rouseys corner. To
me, coming into this fight, it was always a strategy
issue.
Against Holm, Rousey had opted to slug it out
with the former womens world boxing champion,
mistakenly thinking she had it in her.
Call it hubris, call it whatever you wish, but

We all know what happened. Holm pummeled
Rousey senseless in the middle of the cage and
handed her the first loss of her spectacular career.
So coming in to the Nunes fight you would
think Rouseys team had learned their lesson. Or
maybe because they knew Nunes had lost before
due to strikes, they mistakenly thought Rousey was
a better striker.
THE FIGHT. It was really painful to watch for a
Rousey fan like me. Ive said it before and Ill say it
again. Shes just not a striker. She has to play to her
strengths.
The first hard punch that landed froze her
and it went downhill from there. I did not see
any head movement nor any appreciable lateral
movement.
She fought back but she was too stiff and for
her efforts, she opened herself up to more punishment.
She didnt even know how to clinch properly or
tie up her opponent to stifle Nunes offense.
I could go on and on, but its no use beating a
dead horse. Or a hopelessly stubborn coach.

Never mind the updated pics of columnistswhich

Weve gone smaller, but weve gotten bigger
too. The sports pages at least. From three to four

in the previous design was that readers, friends
and even organizers send a lot of photos, and
we only get to use one or two. Now, with a photo
brief, we can run as many photos as we want.
And get this, the photo briefs can be thematic.
Sources usually end up disappointed when I tell
them that they have to wait for a day or two because someone beat them in submitting a photo of
their champion team in a football festival.
Heck, for our photo briefs, we can run a
champions roll or even, the MVP. Our limit is our
imagination.
Thats the advantage of the new design.

Soon, sports will no longer be an

extra baggage, at least to most of
the Cebu City public schools.
With the integration of sports
into the curriculum of all the
public schools in Cebu City and
the creation of the Department of
Education (DepEd) Sports Council, Cebu City public school athletes will now have a new direction towards the goal of winning
more gold medals in the Palarong
Pambansa.
Thanks to the responsive
leadership of DepEd Cebu City
Division Superintendent Bianito
Dagatan, who is very supportive
to the idea of making Cebu City
public schools a powerhouse in
athletics and other sporting discipline.

The idea is to encourage public school principals to create a
sports program for their respective schools starting next school
year.
Compliance of this would give
additional merit to the principals
and teachers.
To ensure that the program
will be fully implemented, an
assistant principal for sports
will soon be appointed in every
school in Cebu City.
Unlike the previous years
when sports is the least priority
among schools, and maintaining
an athletic program seems to be
a burden to the principal and
teachers, now sports will be incorporated into the systems that
every medal in any competition

would mean additional credit to
the implementing schools.
DepEd Cebu City will have the
Cebu City Sports Commission
(CCSC) as its backer in giving the
teachers the technical expertise
and skills in coaching and teaching the school children as well
as giving them the strength and
conditioning training.
DepEd has been very supportive of our projects. Now it is
our time to extend our assistance
to them, CCSC chairman Edward Hayco told SunStar Cebu.

finds new home in City di Mare
The five-year-strong Electronic Dance Music (EDM) fest
LifeDance is just around the
corner, a Sinulog staple, and
just changed the game with an
unprecedented three stages this
year, made possible only in its
new home, City di Mare at the
South Road Properties.
Ive always wanted to find
a venue that was bigger, always
bigger, says Gahum Garcia, who
started LifeDance in 2012 at an
abandoned mall complex at the

Introducing
acrolein
hen I first came across the term

acrolein, the sound bites impressed positively. I thought of it
as something beneficial to the human being like the words calcium or organic. It was perhaps even better than the acerbic
sounding ascorbic acid, which is less pleasant
sounding than vitamin C.
Apparently though, good sound bites can
be entirely misleading if no further checking
is performed. Acrolein historically means
odor in Latin. And, what an odor it emits!
Scientific literature describes it as pungent
smelling, which is essentially an irritating
smell. Thus, it is neither an essential vitamin
nor an essential mineral.
Instead it is toxic, belonging to the aldehyde
family of chemicals, which brought us the cadaver preserving formaldehyde and formalin
(formaldehyde + water). Thus, it is also referred
to as an acrylaldehyde. In fact, it is chemically
a pesticide.
Acrolein is formed from the burning of fats,
wood and tobacco. Thus, you overheat your
cooking oils, you are creating acrolein. And the
next time you use those same oils in another
frying session, you are actually putting acrolein
on your table and in your family members
mouths. Thus, never re-use your cooking oil after using it twice.
Your vehicle exhaust is rich in acrolein.
Take note that your fuel, a petroleum, is a derivative of oil, which is chemically a fat. It can
be smelled in the air as a burnt, sweet, pungent
odor, but only when the concentration reaches
0.25 parts per million air parts.
How about fats in food such as raw cocoa
beans, chocolate liquor, fried potatoes and onions, roasted coffee and heated animal fats and
vegetable oils? The U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry listed it, while the
Environmental Protection Agency included it
in its National Priorities List for federal cleanup objectives.
Interestingly, acrolein is deactivated by
chemicals in the soil. Thus, the country is still
fortunate with its large open un-concreted land
area. However, that does not mean this advantage will last very long with the increasing vehicular volume in Cebu City alone. Increasing
urbanization will shorten it.
We can control at least two factors. First, we
avoid creating more acrolein at home by avoiding overusing cooking oil or minimizing roasted
coffee, for instance. Second, protect as many
forested areas in our island as possible. They
are the only cure to the environmental ailments
our cities are dispensing.
In 1985, famous actor-director Robert Redford was quoted saying during the dedication of
the Yosemite National Park: I think the environment should be put in the category of our
national security. Defense of our resources is
just as important as defense abroad. Otherwise
what is there to defend?

Inside job eyed in Paris heist

in relation to
the robbery of
Kim Kardashian in Paris last
October.
E! News,
based on the report of French
newspaper Le Monde, said one
of the 17 suspects was a limo
driver from an upscale limousine company that the Kardashians frequently hire during
their numerous visits to Paris.
While Kim is relieved that
there has been an update on her
robbery, according to Us Weekly
magazine, any progress made
on the incident makes her relive
everything that happened.
Its still very tough for her to
deal with, the source said.
E! News, which belongs to
the same network that airs the
Kardashian family reality show,
also got confirmation from Paris
police that a 27-year-old limo
driver is in custody related to the

suspect was 72 years old and

Police arrest man behind Hollyweed

Los Angeles police have made a HOLLYWeeD bust.
Zachary Cole Fernandez, 30, was arrested
Monday, just over a week after a prankster used
white tarps to make the HOLLYWOOD sign read
HOLLYWeeD, the LAPD said in a statement.
Fernandez turned himself in with his attorney
and was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor
trespassing, police said.
The prankster was dressed in black and was
recorded by security cameras in the area changing
the sign early New Years Day.
Fernandez, an artist, had already claimed
credit for the stunt in a Vice magazine interview,
but police had not previously confirmed his
involvement.
Fernandez told the Vice he had heard someone
pulled the same prank in the 1970s, and he sought

to repeat it to bring positivity into the world.

Fernandez will be released on his own recognizance and must return to court Feb. 15, police said.
David Ryu, the city councilman for the area of
the Hollywood sign, said such pranks deplete the
resources of our valuable public safety personnel.
