    Black holes are formed when giant stars explode in supernovas at the end of their life cycle. If the star is massive enough, its gravity will collapse the star into an incredibly dense mass from which not even light can escape, forming a black hole. Black holes absorb mass and light around them, growing very large and powerful. Scientists know black holes exist because of their effects on light and objects near them, even though black holes themselves are invisible.
