CHAPTER I
THE BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Introduction
Technology nowadays constantly seems to seep its way into our daily life routines.
Everything we do is somehow connected with technology. Information and communication
technology holds tremendous promise for improving economic growth and the quality of life.
Online business has become more prosperous in todays marketplace than it has been in the past,
when computers were not as popular. With special software that eliminates the jobs of customer
service personnel, along with new ad campaigns and e-alliances, Internet commerce continues to
thrive. In addition, the widespread use of the Internet becoming a part of almost every nations
culture, has driven the milestone of adaptation of this reengineered system confining all the
benefits it can produce of doing business electronically. Electronic commerce is one such
technology that has been produced over the years of development. More and more businesses
have integrated electronic commerce to meet the essential demands of a competitive world.
Customers can "point & click" on the products they wish to purchase, fill out the
customer information, and the product will be shipped and received in a matter of few days.
People from anywhere in the world with an Internet access will be able to visit the site at any
time. They will not be restricted to the "normal" business operating hours. In fact, electronic
commerce (e-commerce, for short) has very attractive features like anywhere, anytime shopping /
banking (24 hours x 365 days) and no holidays, zero inventory, no middlemen, and so forth. (NN
Murthy, BM Mehtre, KPR Rao,GSR Ramam, PKB Harigopal & KS Babu, 2006)
Electronic commerce (E-commerce) consists of the buying and selling of products or
services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks. The amount
of trade conducted electronically has grown extraordinarily with widespread Internet usage. The

use of commerce is conducted in this way, spurring and drawing on innovations in electronic
funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing,
electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection
systems. Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web at least at some point
in the transactions lifecycle, although it can encompass a wider range of technologies such as email as well.
Electronic commerce is a complex term referring to the process of selling and buying
products and services over the Internet or other electronic systems. Considered as the sales
aspect of the e-business, the electronic commerce has revolutionized trade as a routine activity
for the contemporary man by bringing the marketplace to your home or the office, thus saving
you time and efforts.
Sicily market is an online store that specializes in selling T-shirt and at the same time it
sells beauty and health product. Sicily market also offer a made to order features where in you
can customize your own T-shirt design. They are using traditional marketing or advertising
strategies for them to market their business because they lack knowledge in todays technology.
They have been accepting orders manually between their clients which utilizes much of their
time.
Based on the information gathered, the researchers motivated to conduct a research to
find out if it is efficient to establish an online ordering system with an online customization
features that endorse Sicily market to a wider range for more customers.

Project Context
As part of the online marketing and e-commerce site, the researchers had observed and
experienced difficulties mostly in certain issues like creating customization of shirts and online
ordering. Due to these instances customers and owner getting hard time in terms of processing
orders, customization of shirts and reports in their sales.
Sicily Market Online Ordering System is a web-based application tool that has been
developed and deployed for customization of shirts and ordering of different product available in
the site and other interactions among customers and owner. It keeps and handles records of the
resolutions made for all concerns raised by the customers. It also works as collaboration to attain
a better and effective way of marketing and ordering system definitely for the chosen locale.

Purpose and Description


The purpose of this study is to develop an online advertisement for Sicily market to
create and provide an effective, efficient, reliable advertisement or marketing website for Sicily
market and secured system ordering system of Sicily market. On the online ordering system the
user can will choose the product he/she want to purchase and add to his/her cart then after that
he/she will sign up an account as customer or a client to proceed to the next phase the addressing
where in the customer will put his/her address to know where place it will be delivered after that
it will proceed to shipping and the total amount of the ordered product last phase is the payment.
The admin user will manage all the transactions online ordering system. It also has a customized
feature where in you can customize your t-shirt design or you can also upload your own t-shirt
with a finish design.

This website can give benefits both customers and to the store. To those customers have a
busy schedule will save time and to store will give extra sales or income. Customers will
experience a better service to stores by adding a delivery to the home service and the stores will
become popular for their new service which is made to order sports t-shirt it also receive a better
feedback to the customers.
Statement of the Objectives
This section states that the specific requirements that the researchers have to provide that
must be met by the system, which is categorized in two parts: the general objectives and specific
objectives.
General Objectives
The general objective of this research is to design, implement, and maintain online
ordering system that is effective in marketing, advertising and has a secured ordering system and
secured payment method with a customization feature.
Specific Objectives
The following are the specific objectives that the proponents are planning to achieve
1. To create an online ordering system that will advertise the product of Sicily market.
a. Revision features allow content to be updated and edited after initial posting
of products in the site.
2. To design and implement a usable interface for the company and for the Electronic
commerce system.

Significance of the Study
The proposed system is essential for the reason that the system will be used as a model to
determine whether social media and business transactions must go together as the new trend in
business dealings. The question should websites be upgraded and include social media? will
be answered. This will be a first of its kind and if it will succeed, it could become a model for
other business industries as well.

not be covered by the system.

Online Ordering system


The proposed system will have two access rights which will include the admin and
Customer or Guest. The admin user will manage all the transactions of the ordering

system while the client can view the product and price.
Customize feature
this feature allow the customer to customize the t-shirt design they want they can also

upload their own t-shirt design.


Online payment
The system also proposed an online payment where in the customer can also pay online.
Inventory
It also has an inventory where in the admin or the owner can monitor the quantity of the
product

This section presents the limitation and other aspects not covered by the study which are:

The study will not intend to cater a business inventory system, hence, its
focus only in e-commerce inventory system.

The study will only cover the sales information of the online store.

Definition of Terms
The following are the terms related to the study. Definitions are stated actively to
understand clearly the flow of the system that will be developed.
T-shirt - clothing that Sicily market sells
Website - A set of interconnected web-pages, usually including a homepage, generally located on
the same server, and prepared and maintained as a collection of information by the admin or staff

store. Selling online is indeed one of the great ways to make profits online. In fact, it is also a
great way to widen your target market and grow your business fast as well.
Also Carolyn Anderson (2012) stated that "by putting your business online, you are also
widening your reach worldwide". It is important to check out some online selling tips that may
help make selling successful.
In addition Harris (2012) the online medium offers a big platform to promote your
business as compared to other medium available. Your products and services will reach to a large
number of potential buyers only if you choose the right marketing medium for your business.
According to Sunny (2012) the primary reasons for marketing your ecommerce business
online is to remain fasten.
Furthermore Burleson (2005), a website must be simple and focused site to succeed. One
that is easy to build, maintenance-free, low cost, trustworthy, and a powerful traffic-builder and
customer-converter.

food ordering systems for Drestaurant. It helps the Drestaurant to be well known online and it
will make the sales of Drestaurant go higher.
Conceptual framework
The IPO diagram serves as a visual representation of the process of the system. The
initial data gathering at Sicily Market. The researchers received feedback from the owner about
the problems and difficulties that come along with the traditional marketing strategies, inventory
and report processes. These problems led to a number of problems of manual process of forms.
That is why the researchers came up with the idea of creating Online Ordering System for Sicily
Market, which would computerize the process of orders. This way the Sicily Market daily
operation can be done in a much more simple way.

Methodology and Design
This chapter presents the research design and procedures used by the researchers. It gives
an overview on how the research study was designed and this part of the study discusses all the

necessary requirements analysis tools,

documentations, design, processes, and methodology

used to make the study/system possible.


Research Design
The research study conducted by the researchers is a descriptive research design. It tried
to show that there can be improvements in terms of web based online marketing system. It was
the objective of the researchers to determine the problem areas and develop a system that would
resolves the problem encountered by the management of the Sicily

Digital content and websites, which contain related information, would help in the
completion of the study.
Research Instrument
The data and information collected from various sources used to identify the possibility
and need of the proposed system. Specifically the following instruments were used for survey
purposes.
Questionnaire
The questionnaire was used as the main instrument in this study. It is a set of carefully
prepared and logically ordered questions which leads to the necessary information needed by the
researchers. Questionnaires were prepared, and it served as guidelines for the researchers to
solve the existing problems being experienced by the owner and admin of the Sicily Market.

The main respondents of this study are the owner, admin and customers of Sicily Market.
A survey questionnaire was given and interviews were conducted to gather the important
information needed in coming up an accurate and more effective comprehensive Online Ordering
System application. A purposive sampling technique is used to determine the respondents, it is a type of
non-probability sampling that is most effective when one needs to study a certain cultural domain with
knowledgeable experts within. Purposive sampling may also be used with both qualitative and
quantitative re- search techniques. There were twenty respondents determined using this technique

and Sixteen were given questionnaires and sixteen are the customer of Sicily Market .
Statistical Analysis
The study made used of the following statistical instruments to determine the validity of
the results. The study will use a Purposive sampling, each individual is chosen base from the
owners choiced and entirely by chance, such that each individual has the same probability of
being chosen at any stage during the process.
System Development Methodology
In coming up with Web Based Mobile Zoo Mapping system, the researchers
used different methodologies and research designs to acquire the necessary requirements
and specification needed in the development of the system.
This section details the methods and standard processes and procedure necessary to
analyze, design, implement and maintain project. It identifies the formal method that the
proponents intended to follow in order to accomplish what have been set in the objectives. The
formal methodologies use from the design methodologies, software engineering and systems

study. This model will aid the researcher in developing the proposed study. The Sashimi

completed before requirement analysis is considered complete. This approach is especially
suitable for projects requiring gainful insights into each layer as they move through their
development-life-cycles.
Unlike the Pure Waterfall Model where complete documentation is provided to the team
handling the next phase, Sashimi Waterfall Model suggests personnel continuity between phases.

Use Case Diagram
The proponents used Use Case Diagram to represent of a user's interaction with the
system that shows the relationship between the user and the different use cases in which the user
is involved. A use case diagram can identify the different types of users of a system and the
different use cases and will often be accompanied by other types of diagrams as well. (See
Appendix E: Use Case Diagram).
Network Topology
The network topology provides a visual aid in understanding how the user will be able to access
the proposed system. It shows the several users and provides a symbolic view on the use of
devices used to access the system. It shows that the proposed system is a web based system that
needs to be hosted on web in order for it to be accessible through the use of the internet. (See
Appendices F: Use Network topology).
Data Flow Diagram (DFD)
A DFD shows what kind of information will be input to and output from the system,
where the data will come from and go to, and where the data will be stored .(See Appendix G:
Data Flow Diagram).
System Design Specification
Systems design is the process of defining the architecture, components, modules,
interfaces, and data for a system to satisfy specified requirements. Systems design could be seen

as the application of systems theory to product development. There is some overlap with the
disciplines of systems analysis, systems architecture and systems engineering.

pricing and details. On this page you can also upload your own design of t-shirt that you want to
order.

included in this page.

storage parameters needed to generate a design in a data definition language, which can then be

Evaluation Procedure
To come up with a very significant result the researchers used several instruments to
gather sufficient data for the study.
The researchers had a survey was conducted (1) owner, (1) admin, (2) IT expert and (16)
customer like the Sicily. The following activities were undertaken in the evaluation process:
1. The researchers discussed the concept of the system and its operation for the
Respondents familiarization;
2. The researchers presented the system through demonstration to show how it worked;
3. Question and answer followed after the demonstration for some clarifications;
4. The evaluation questionnaire (Appendix B) was given to the respondents for them to
answer. They were requested to rate the system based on different criterion specified in
the instrument using the Likert Scale in Table 4.
5. The instruments were collected, data were tallied and summarized, and the mean was
computed;

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
This chapter presents the results and discussion of the project study. It includes the
project description, project structure, project capabilities and limitations and project testing and
evaluation.

The alpha test was conducted by one (1) owner, one (1) admin personnel and (2) two IT
experts and sixteen (16) selected customers. The following were observed during the testing
procedure:
1. Flexibility of Administration panel. Merchant can customize his store the way he wants to
make sure it is according to the customers need.
2. The website gives you tons of features, makes site management easy, provides
management benefits, gives users analytics and reporting.

3. The customized shirt plugins was running properly without problems encountered.
4. It is light weight website which enhances the loading speed of the shopping store.
The bugs discovered in the alpha test were addressed by the developer. Then, the beta test was
conducted to 20 respondents comprised of IT experts, customers and owner . Table shows the
hardware and software specifications used during the system evaluation that had ensured that the
system would run:
Evaluation Results
The performance of the website was evaluated in terms of Content, Design, functionality,
Technology used and Originality based on Philippine Web Awards Criteria. There were 20
Respondents who evaluated the website composed of one (1) owner, one (1) admin personnel
and (2) two IT experts and sixteen (16) customers.

This summarizes the evaluation result showing the mean per criterion and the
corresponding qualitative interpretation. The table also presents the overall mean resulting from
getting the average of the mean of the five criteria.
The system received a positive overall mean rating of Very Good, showing that it had a
impact to the evaluators. The evaluation for originality scored for the highest mean amounting to
4.87, achieving a very good rating. This shows that the concept of the system appealed the most
to the users.

The content criteria received the lowest mean amounting to 4.38, which is

nevertheless equivalent to a very good rating and shows that the content of the system is in
correspondence to the capstone processes.

showed that there was a problem in using a manual customization of shirts. And in using an
automated system, it helps the owner to have a fast transaction and more accurate reports.
